It should be bleeding obvious why the rapid strikes animation was changed to what it is as the new animation makes sense for all one handed weapons not just daggers and swords.
The new jabs is a better animation too. I could agree with many that the change of 'spear' model wasn't necessary but the animation itself is fine and like rapid strikes flows better with weaving.
