No offer like this has existed before and it coincides with the release of a competitive MMO.
This is why competition is king for consumers. All the ESO main streamers are playing New World and the game is flavour of the month - whether it lasts is questionable.
But ZOS are just reacting to market competition. They know that if they can leech off a percentage of the ESO migrants to New World and tempt them back with a free DLC, than its a worthwhile short term monetary loss.
Late summer every single year that I’ve played:
Summerfall Event - Summerset Chapter 50% off and free pet, mount, and a notable home for owners
Dragon Rise Event - Elsweyr Chapter 50% off, double drops and double gold (first time ever) plus unique rewards including styles, tables, pets, combat dummies, and costumes
Lost Treasures of Skyrim - Chapter 50% off and free pet, costume, and 600 inventory home for players. Plus style pages and rewards for owners
Murkmire - free for collecting 21 daily rewards during November 2018
Every zone DLC typically goes on sale a month or two after release.

Yeh but an entire free DLC chapter? I honestly can't remember ever there being a free DLC on the base of buying a previous chapter.
It coincides a month after the release of a new competitive MMO? Yeh it makes sense. That's just business - you would expect SOMETHING from ZOS over the next few months to stir the pot at least. I'm surprised they've not used this time to release a new class or skill line and really give the ESO leavers something to think about. It's not like new competitive MMO games are annual. Lucky to have 2 or 3 a decade.
trackdemon5512 wrote: »Murkmire was a free DLC Chapter basically immediately upon release. As long as ANY player logged in 21 days for November 2018 those players got Murkmire for free. It set a precedent that has not been repeated till now. In terms of engagement Murkmire was a better deal. Oh and that year you also got Summerfall and the free Psijic Villa for owning the Summerset DLC.

Don't you think that if they said that there were prizes that only Plus subbers would receive, that people would be upset that it wasn't inclusive, and they were paywalled? The zone is already paywalled by being a Chapter. Having everyone get it free, whether they be Plus or not, makes it an even playing field for the end prize. How well would it go over with the 'pay to win' crowd that cries pay to win any time anything involves crowns or real money? I am not saying it is but there are very vociferous members of our community that are very quick to get upset about things that are exclusive to the crown store or subbers.

If/when you no longer have ESO+ you'll still have access to the DLC.
ESO+ Player : We don't get anything that's a shame!
Every other rewards of the event : Am i a joke to you?

That said, I am also disappointed that the mystery reward is something that doesn't benefit me at all. I was looking forward to a cool bonus reward, and finding out that it's just something I already have is a let down after all the hype.
People can feel multiple things at once - I can be happy for the people it benefits, and disappointed for myself. I'm not trying to take away other people's free stuff, I'm just personally frustrated at how this was set up and communicated.

Not that the prize was a free DLC - congrats to the non-subs on your bonus prize by the way - but rather the marketing behind it. They hyped up this mystery prize and then it just left a bitter taste in my mouth.
They should have just announced it to begin with. Then no one would be upset. In fact, even the subs would be excited because it is a cool reward for a lot of players. But by calling it “amazing” and making us tune into a stream, only to tell your most loyal, and most likely highest spending customers, “sorry the bonus prize isn’t really for you” makes me feel bad. And marketing for a game should never make you feel bad.
How about ESO+ members get two extra armory slots as long as they are subscribed? How about subs get 2000 seals of endeavors for being loyal customers? How about ANYTHING?
But I guess it doesn’t matter. They know the vast majority of loyal subs will just keep on subbing.

Except ZOS clearly has no problem with discounting crown store items for ESO+ subscribers or giving them a free furnishing item each month. And before daily rewards were given ZOS rewarded ESO+ subscribers with free crown crates whenever there was a ESO+ trial.
Announcing a 2-player mount would have been solid. Announcing a house would have been solid. The combat dummy and attuneable tables for 100% for this event is solid AND unique.
DEADLANDS DLC for free, an item anyone can get, and promoting it as an ultimate reward is a let down comparatively.

Totally agree! I'm not upset that non-subs are getting a free DLC. I'm upset that subs aren't getting anything. Yes, we would lose access to the DLC if we unsub, but that's a niggle since most won't unsub.
Those who are telling subs they shouldn't be upset: think about how you'd feel if the announcement had been an awesome gift for ESO+ subscribers only. You'd feel disappointed. You'd wonder why ZOS told everyone to stay tuned for a wonderful announcement, only to find out you get nothing.

You cannot drive the narrative that it is unequal, when it is very much equal. You're only not being given special privilege's for paying for a sub, for an event for a chapter, which is different.

I'm not pushing a fallacy. As an ESO+ subscriber, who has no intention of unsubscribing at this time, I didn't get anything. Also, one of the benefits that I'm PAYING for is now being given away for free, which diminishes the value of my subscription.
Essentially, when the awesome prize is given out, I won't get anything that I don't already have.
trackdemon551 laid it out nicely in the post above this one.

Put it this way. For those with ESO+ there is zero incentive in the reward. Their subscription was to afford them access to all DLCs and the craft bag. A 12 month subscription amounts to 2 zones (the fall zone and the previous year chapter) plus the craft bag.
For 12 month subscription holders you’re effectively just taking away the value of one large item while the price doesn’t change. Arguably they’re wasting their money. The same for 3 month subscription holders.
1 month holders and non subscribers get the greatest value.
A house the reward is fantastic and of equal value for all players. Offering the DLC for free amounts to a waste of money for subscribers. See those who bought Imperial City and felt similarly miffed when it was given away for free to all players years later.
