PS5 Update Feedback

I only have 3 issues with it, so overall it's a good update. What I thank you for:

HDR Vibrant Mode - is nice in Performance mode. I am hearing some people are having problems with Fidelity Mode however, that being they are saying it takes longer to mount their mounts now. I tested it and did notice a few extra seconds delay.

New Furnishings - I will never complain about that. :p

Soul Lock now filling Empty Gem Stones from all skills, not just Weapon Skills - Thank You, my Majicka chars are happy about this!

Other Misc tiny things such as Companion Guild skill lines/etc

What I am not happy with:

Forcing the full chat window up when using a keyboard. What we had previous when simply hitting Enter on our keyboards to chat was a simple flashing cursor in the actual chat window and being able to still see the full game screen while typing. Forcing the full chat window up as if we had gone into menu and hit Square is not cool! Please change this back or give us a toggle.

Interactions with things better - This is actually helpful and I would have it above if there weren't a few things left out. Such as Stalking Blastbones Corpse and I am sure other Corpses from the Necro Class still being in the way of looting when on or near a corpse. Please also add these to this improvement.

Wrothgar Fishing - ok this of course was not intended and is of course a bug. Please just remember to have this on the list of things that need fixing for the next update. Thanks!

So that's pretty much it for me for now regarding this update. Feel free to add your feedback here if I missed anything out or simply just to add to it. :)

Just started up today - HDR is much better to use and adjust now. It's my pet peeve on PS5 and Xbox, so kudos to the fix.

HDR Default is nice as the game no longer looks like a Lisa Frank explosion.

That noted I can’t help but state that the brightness slider seems to be broken. It has a major visual difference between the leftmost position and the notch one level up. After that there seems to be no change to the brightness on either default or vibrant settings.

I’m using a 2020 TCL 6 series TV with 4K HDR as reference.

@trackdemon5512 Thanks for the additional feedback. The dev team is looking into the note on the brightness slider as well. Follow up question there. Do you notice a difference between HDR and non-HDR for the brightness slider? Just curious there.

Also, kudos on the Lisa Frank reference. That one gave me a good laugh!

On both HDR and Non-HDR the slider functions the same.

When set all the way to left it would appear that contrast is set to very low or none. Once you move the slider one notch over contrast is added but never touched again. Rather the farther to the right you slide, the more the color is saturated on both HDR and non-HDR.

On both the PS4 and PS5 editions the effect is the same. With regards to Vibrant however, increasing the HDR Brightness aka saturation here leads to an over saturation and significant loss of detail. In Default mode that detail remains without being washed out by color.

I commented on another thread before I saw this one, but I will include it here too.

I really love the default HDR on PS4, looks so much better! Thanks again!
    :)

The HDR slider doesn’t seem to do anything for me. That may be what was mentioned above as the brightness slider.

I have my game at max brightness and it is very dark. If I set it according to suggestion for the three ESO rings it is much too dark to see and be able to play.

It would be nice to be able to increase the brightness further to see better inside buildings, especially at night. I found that when even fighting NPCs in the IC Sewers today it was hard to see them and I knew where they would be located.

I also always have Brightness turned all the way up so I can see everything in Delves and other such dark spaces. Try the HDR on Vibrant and you might get the Brightness back.

I did notice when I upgraded to PS5 that the game looked a lot darker compared to my PS4 so hopefully they can get it to the same place as it used to be for me there. In the mean time tho maybe HDR Vibrant is the work around. GL!

Our damage numbers are back in the right place, thanks for that!

HDR is definitely too dark tho (and I can't live with vibrant), to the point where it's not usable for me. I get eyestrain trying to make out details. The colours are more dull too, maroon just comes out brown for example.

No, Vibrant is just wrong in being too color saturated compared to non-4K HDR, it is what I have had to deal with since I switched to a new TV about a year ago. It can cause eye strain for the long hours I put into the game.

While I like the more natural colors of the default HDR, I think the contrast is way too high and causes some of the brightness issues.

I agree that HDR VIBRANT ups the color saturation to a cartoonish point that results in colors that bleed and a loss of detail. In fact HDR VIBRANT misses the point by increasing colors on everything rather than being selective, the exact difference between the term saturated and vibrant.

The contrast of HDR is indeed too high. A proper HDR filter would allow you to see truly black blacks but also the shades underneath in order to make out details. And it needs to do this without brightening the image so as not to wash out details.

I think the idea of blackest blacks in outdoor settings is the problem. The shadows could be potentially just too dark in full sunlight. I also see that braziers in full daylight still cause reflections along structures that are brighter than the sunlight itself, this should only be a very small radius of illumination. My character with dark colors in full sunlight also shouldn’t be the blackest black and she seems to be. The ambient sunlight seems to have no scattering component for illumination in these shadows which should also certainly be addressed. It is not just direct illumination for sunlight but the scattering component as well. Sorry, I do not know how this is actually implemented in game but something just doesn’t seem right. The brightness in full sunlight outdoor is fine until you get into shadows, where it is too dark.

Are the HDR options only for PS5? not PS4?

Thank you, OP, for mentioning the text chat bug. It is very very annoying. On PS4 hitting enter on an external keyboard invokes the chat entry field, but a split second later invokes the PS4 on-screen keyboard - which takes up the whole screen, and makes any and all / commands very difficult, and makes using chat history (up and down buttons) impossible.

The same thing happens from options, square.

ZoS one additional thing I want to thank you for good work improving the skill timers. Nightblade merciless resolve timer is perfect now. If you can still do a little work on timers, please add an option in the combat settings to have the timer prefer the effect on a target or the effect on the self. The biggest example of this is mages guild > degeneration. Currently it shows the timer on my sorcery buff, but what I really want to know is the timer on the DoT. (hmmm, come to think of it maybe this is impossible, since I can put it on multiple enemies? But still, time on the DoT since the most recent cast would be more helpful to a dps player, imo.)

@lillybit says "damage numbers are back in the right place" - which reminds me... either damage numbers are busted or WORSE dropped frames are swallowing more of my DPS than an oblivion portal.

    Commonly this happens...

    Swallow soul (18k or something)
Next swallow soul is different of course, because there are crit variables and buff variables.
But sometimes the difference is... like 6k instead of 18k?

OK, maybe a light attack missed or something,

But then a bow proc... i hear the fat juicy thicc bow sound and look at the numbers for gratification and it says... 12k.... ???? Then the next bow proc 5 seconds later is like "64k"

Then I'll get into execute, stab... 72k ranging up to 112k on a big trial boss with good support buffs. OK, thats cool, but how can in be that I hit 7 stabs (assasin's blade, btw) in a row, and they are all 72k-90k is, except one is like 14k? And I hear the stab sound effect and see the stab animation.

I got so annoyed by this I just turned combat numbers off for a while

    one last thing,

DK skills seem buggy or overly finiky with their range.

The whip and the scratch (burning embers) are the two worst.

Go to Halls of Fabrication and fight the Assembly General with a Dragon Knight. Stand on the platform and try to find a spot where you can actually hit the Big Boi with your whip and scratch. Its not easy but you CAN find a spot. But then, inexplicably, from the SAME SPOT, at some point you WONT be able to hit him. Its not because you are stunned. The skills are dimmed on the skill bar.

    @Rudrani

To answer your first question "Are the HDR options only for PS5? not PS4?" This is what is in the patch notes:

    "New HDR Mode
Added a new and improved HDR mode. The new ‘Default’ setting is closer to the saturation of non-HDR but with increased color depth, if your hardware is capable of it. If you prefer the original HDR setting, it can be found in the Video Options panel and is now named under the Vibrant HDR option."

However this was also added for PS5 only:

    "Dynamic Resolution Scaling
Dynamic Resolution Scaling has been added to the PlayStation 5 to improve the experience of using Performance mode. When Performance mode is enabled in the settings, the game will be able to hit resolutions of 4k - even in Performance mode - in situations where it would still allow you to maintain 60 FPS. The game will be able to maintain that 60 FPS by automatically lowering the resolution during heavier effect usage or when things get more graphically intense."

Yes the chat thing is annoying, that's why I had to post about it. You are right it does make reading previous chatter harder to do as well as using commands such as /reloadui etc. I notice there is also a delay for when typing starts after hitting enter now too. Example the first letter I type is usually not there as I type it too fast for the system to keep up with me.

This was already bad enough in the old system when I would change chat mode. Example if my chat was set to zone chat and then a guildmate asked the guild a question, I would change chat mode (/g3 example) and then hit enter again to start chatting. For some reason, 99% of the time when I start typing after hitting enter my typing is going no where as the game failed to open the chat bar. I guess I just type too fast lol...or the system is just soooo slow as I never had these issues in Guildwars 2.....

I don't use timers on skills so I really can't comment on that.

Yes there are still dungeons and other bugs that are still not fixed. I didn't mention those since I figured they are still working on them since they were not in the patch notes. Examples:

2 vibrations when gathering resources still....
Champ screen crashes (not sure these still happen - but not in patch notes)

That's really all I have for now, have not been playing the game as much as I usually do since patch as I am taking a break and playing something else. So I am not sure if all the Instance crashes are still happening etc.

Ditto for the Damage numbers and DK issues you are having. Again I haven't played enough since patch or I am not seeing the issues. You are playing PS4 right? The damage numbers issue you are seeing may only apply still to PS4 players. As for DK, all my DK's are stamina builds and just run with 2 Handed/Bow skills so I can't really comment there. Actually maybe 1 of them is a Duel Wield Dagger build, but you get what I mean I think. :)

GL with those issues you are facing and hopefully they see your posts and look into them.

They need to fix the crashing in the Library of arkthzand in the Markarth DLC on PS5.

Agreed, all bugs should be fixed. In fact there should be NONE! In fact when I started playing (2 years ago now) there were NO bugs, well none that I saw or knew about. Now it seems to just be the norm. New update - some bugs fixed, more added to replace them. It sucks, it really does. I don't know if it's because the staff are mostly working from home now or what, but I do hope it starts to improve and is totally gone again once this COVID nonsense is done with and behind us...

Gonna play a bit now tho, do some housing since I just bought the Thieves Oasis. So if the constant Housing crashes still happen for me - I will let you guys know.

are they ever going to fix the HDR slider, it's terrible and i'd rather not go into every dungeon in vibrant mode it's not great on my eyes.

i mean how was this not tested properly before release "get the latest tv for PS5", "we've updated our game for PS5" except the brightness settings, you know.. so you can SEE the improvements. (i mean it's fine if the game was only set in daylight and the dungeons had decent lighting) but neither of those is true.

I mean i have an LG OLED, and ESO is the only game that disappoints.

I could be wrong but I believe the broken slider is across the board, not just for PlayStation. Even more reason for them to fix it!

There was supposedly a fix for PS5 being too dark last patch (or one before that maybe?) but as far as I could tell it made no difference. It's still so dark that I get a headache trying to make things out even with the brightness set to full. We could really do with that slider.

The HDR slider has been a mystery to me, but I think it controls the brightness of some of the lighting effects. If I turn it up then animations of skills seem super bright from what I remember and some lighting furnishings/items as well. It doesn’t affect all of them though, so I don’t know if it’s inconsistent or just applies to some things intentionally.

The problem is with the brightness. On PS4 I could increase the brightness to where I could see comfortably inside buildings to open containers, and it would be a bit bright outside but that was okay. On PS5 I cannot get to that point. I think the brightness max needs to be increased.
