We can all see the same chests out in the open world, correct? O.o

I'm pretty sure we do, but I only ask because as I run Vvardenfell for chests over the past several days I've seen a few players here and there running from one of the spawn points I hit. Naturally I assume they got the chest, but as I run past the spot the chest is always there. One player was literally standing on one of the little islands where a chest spawns and as I ran up he/she just ran away, leaving what was for me an Advanced Chest. Are they not seeing them? It's a goofy question but its happened enough that I had to ask. What is the point of randomly running around Vvardenfell if you're not looking for chests?

They could see it if they were looking. Who knows what happened.

I've left chests behind because I'm new and can't always open them.

You're right, I'm assuming they could open them. I didn't notice their character levels.

I've left chests behind because I can't be bothered and figure a different player would have more use for the contents.

I’ve often run around looking for lore books and will intentionally leave chests out for others as I have no interest in them at the time. Sometimes, I pick up a chest and then leave the next 5 alone and randomly pick up the next one. Once I hit 50, the chests really have nothing I want, so I grab them for fun.

I realize now I'm making far too many assumptions here, lol. Personally I'm farming the paintings, and when I see other players out in that specific zone I assume they are, too. I forget there's other things out there (tons of fishing spots, for one).

Sometimes you’re not after chests. Not often, I grant you, because it’s at least free money and xp. Maybe you’re in a hurry and just need crafting materials or something.

At some point, all I get out of chests is a tiny bit of gold and something to deconstruct. My stickerbook is practically complete in most base game zones and adding another purple upgrade mat to my 2000 in the craft bag isn't going to make a dent of a difference when it gets deconned. I run into a chest I may go for it if I got the time, but if someone gets to it first, its meh.

Good chance he broke his last lockpick and walked off sad. :(

Unless they are almost right on the path I am planning to take I don't bother with them much.

I saw that happen to someone on bleakrock and I told them to wait and I'll pick the lock for them. They started to run away and I had to yell at them to come back it's unlocked now and theirs. 😂

The overland is instanced and phased/spliced. Sometimes you can see the chest from the distance, but it disappears when you come closer. You can see mobs which disappear when engaging in meele range (and then reappear when you make few steps back). This is a bug/side effect of instancing. Maybe that's what happened to that player who didn't see the chest?

    Examples of phasing:

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/362861/vanishing-chest-in-eastmarch
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/136457/disappearing-chests

This happened to me multiple times, especially in Shadowfen zone.

Sometimes I can't be bothered with a chest because I'm too busy racing off to do something else. I know I've ran past plenty of chests by the road before when I was farming harrowstorms

Thank you! I don't remember this happening with chests but I think it explains why I sometimes see a dolmen (or other world event) start but when I get closer it ends almost instantly. I've been wondering about that for years!

Same here! I knew about instancing but didn't put two and two together haha
