Main class?

I recently had a conversation with a guildie who asked me, "What class is your main?" This got me thinking...I have no idea, really. Can anyone else sympathize with this dilemma? I thought about my ESO history and it goes something like this:

1) In BETA, I rolled a stamina templar and a Magicka Sorc.

I played for a little thereafter but I dropped the game due to early performance issues.

2) On Xbox, my main was definitively a magicka Sorc.

When ESO dropped on consoles, I came back to the game and mag Sorc was easily my main. I had many alts, of course, but I felt like Sorc was more forgiving in the lag I saw on console. I also like the visuals.

3) On PC.....I am having trouble identifying my main.

Switching to PC was a no-brainer. I love it a lot. BUT....despite playing all classes, I can't seem to pick or identify a "main."

I wanted to love Necros but I just can't seem to get into them (it's an unpopular opinion, I know) and the visuals seem more like "spooky Halloween" than TES Necros. Wardens are fun, but I can't get into them either. I don't care for the visuals. Sorcs....I like them, but maybe I'm bored of them from my experience on Xbox because I lack the motivation to play them. That leaves me with Templar and Nightblade. I like them both, stam and mag. I just can't figure out which I like more. Consequently, I can't seem to "main" one of them. For PvE group content, I do better damage on a stamplar this patch. For soloing, I survive better on magblade, but I seem to do more damage on a magplar for some reason (pve and pvp). I like the visuals of both, even though they are polar opposites in theme (light vs. dark). Both are fun and rewarding in their own way.

Can anyone sympathize with my struggle? What is your main? Why did you pick it? I'd love to know.

Wardens are my mains. I love pet classes - hunter in WoW, whatever it was in RIFT (don't remember now); I started ESO with a stamblade with bow, a follow-on from my stealth archers in Skyrim - but since satellite is my only available connection other than dialup, I found her very difficult to play the way this game works.

So I bought the warden class - and as in WoW and RIFT, with the pet run server-side, that helps mitigate the bad ping experience some.

My "secondary" mains are magsorcs - because of the pets. I also have lots of everything else but necros - I never play necros in any game.

I like all my toons for different reasons. My Templar was my first toon to VR1, and I still enjoy playing it. But my NB is just...I just always have to play him. Gankblade is just too fun I suppose, but he is my crafter, has the most wayshrines and skyshards unlocked. Was my main before I started grinding alts, and still is. I'd see who you have the most play time on and maybe that's your "main".

From a PvE standpoint I started with a magDK then slowly transitioned to mag sorc but for the last few years I've rolled my magblade and will never go back (as long as they remain viable). High damage, great healing, the works.

For me, my main is the one I go out of my way to earn achievements on. My first toon was a DK so that is what my main has to be unless I want to farm all those achievements on an alt.

WTB class change token or account wide achievements, please.

I can't really say what my main class would be, since TES IV I've always been playing my main char with the same combination of skills/developed skills and that include (maybe a weird combination for some) bow, stealth, summoning and destruction spells. That's just what I enjoy the most.

It would be interesting to see if people’s main would change if achievements were account-wide.

Mine wouldn't - I'm totally uninterested in the whole "achievements" thing.

That's fair. Some players refuse to change what they consider to be their main class because of the number of achievements earned on that class. I wondered if achievements being account-wide would change the equation for them. For others, achievements are not a big deal.

My magsorc was my main now it's my warden. Always loved pet classes in every game. I prefer ranged combat as apposed to in your face combat. I grew tired of playing my sorc for 6.5 years. I tried other classes and just can't seem to make them work for me. On my sorc I did were wolf and I hate it so thinking about getting cured. For now it's my warden. I wish they would fix Bosmer racials to reflect warden abilities better. My warden is a breton I am generally happy with my warden though.

Good question. I think it stemmed from that conversation I had with a guildie. Beyond that, I kind of want to have a character that I typically play as my "go-to" class. It could be that I just get bored easily and need to jump to different classes to keep things fresh, so the idea of a main is unrealistic.

I feel like "main"ing a class is antiquated. Its more like what class am I playing at the moment. Ideally I want a stam and maj version of each.

I have more dks and necros than anything else. A couple templars, couple sorcerers, a nb, but the first character I made in early access was my DK.

That's how I'm playing at the moment. In addition to what I mentioned in the comment or two above yours, I've changed my game focus when I'm not in groups or PvP to being more of a completionist . . . each zone, everything done. Need to pick a class/character and go with it.

Maybe I'll have to do that on more than one class. lol

Technically, my main is my first char, a Stam NB, that does all the crafting and has the most achievments, but...

My character-most-played-main usually ends up being the character that got the coolest new appearance upgrade from the latest crates or whatever. Right now I'm playing my Stam DK (lots of fire) because he's got the Deadlands Scorcher skin, the Fire-Forged Maul, Spiderkith Eyes, and Waking Flame armor (he's a full on Daedra Lord). He looks too cool, so gotta play him a lot.

I have a menagerie of alts, mostly because I like designing characters. I would actually play them too in any significant fashion if we had an account wide achievement overview; alas. DK all day every day it is for me.

I don't understand why some players have multiple characters of the same class, for instance multiple stamplars, but all built for PVE. Not criticizing it, its just not something I do. Maybe if I get to the point where I have more than 9 characters, that could happen, but I like the ability to play multiple different ways with different characters and classes.

    Magicka Templar.

Not because I play it the most now, or because it was my first class or most loved. It simply has the most of everything on it. Most completed maps, most skill points, most recipes, crafting styles and other character bound achievements. Everything goes to my Templar first, then the other characters get the scraps, or it gets sold.

I still keep him up to date with quests and new content, but generally play other things in Cyro (rarely play these days), or group content.

most definitely dont have a main.

my first probably has the most playtime. and achieves and skyshards. but mainly because I played her straight to cp160 doing mainly quests. for gear reasons and to give more time to preleveling horseshit to minimally acceptable speed/stamina/bagspace levels.
on my other level 7? (for writs) chars.

she ended up my crafter and stealther/thiefassassin and mats farmer. after a stunt as tank. she hasnt seen the inside of dungeon in ages..

My main is the first character I created, a mag sorc. But right now that is only true for PVE. In PVP, I have more playtime on non sorc classes than my actually main. Primarily because while my main was focused on PVE, I was learning different classes in PVP.

But, I have hit a spot where I have exhausted all but a few PVE things, mostly farming gear for the sticker book is left and some of the achievements for Vet dungeons. I figure I can wait until dungeon events to farm those achievements. In the meantime, once this current event is over, the only character I'll be playing in PVP until Grand Overlord will be my Mag Sorc.

    DK forever and ever!

I like the abilities and the lore.

"The origin of the Dragonknights is traced to the 1st Akaviri invasion in 1E 2700, when the Akaviri met Reman at Pale Pass. Surrendering in service to Emperor Reman, the elite Akaviri under his command eventually became the Dragonguard, acting as the personal honor guard of the Reman Dynasty. While protecting the Remans, the Dragonguard were said to have been using powers and magic learned directly from the Dragons, native arts in their homeland of Akavir. After the assassination of Reman Cyrodiil III, however, the Dragonguard was officially disbanded out of shame until Versidue Shaie reinstated them, this time serving as secret intelligence rather than an honor guard directly, losing their capacity for Dragon magic. Even so, a former Grandmaster of the Dragonguard made sure that this martial art survived into the Second Era, and instructed his disciples to teach this art and spread it themselves. The disciples came to be known as the Dragonknights, masters of magic mirroring that of Dragons.."

What? Anything can be your main. It’s not like just because it’s your main you get extra dps or less lag. Play what u think is fun.

That's the issue, isn't it? On xbox, I used to look forward to playing magsorc. I'd do writs, etc., on others, but I couldn't wait to jump on the ole Sorc to play. Now on PC, I'm kind of sick of Sorc, but I can't seem to find that one class to stick with for a while.

For me, it's a toss-up between Templar and NB. Maybe I'll just flip a coin. :D

For many, the main is more about time and resource spent than it is about particular enjoyment. Now I enjoy Mag Sorc in PVE. But I've mentioned it before, if Mag Necro had been a thing when I started, that would have been the route I'd have chosen. It wasn't and so I have a sorc. But I am also not going to spend the 10s of millions of gold, and almost 5 years of playtime to get a Mag Necro up to the same level of completion as my Mag Sorc. It's just not going to happen. So Mag Sorc is my main, and I will continue to work towards unlocking all achievements on the character. And I have 17 alts, but they all really only get limited playtime, as any time spent on them is time that is not being spent earning achievements on my main.

Choosing a Main class isn't an easy decision for some people, and that's ok; nothing wrong with that, at all.

My main is Warden, since it is closest to a Diablo II druid, which is my all-time favorite RPG class.

I think there's different ways to gauge 'main'.

If you like or use one particular character more than others, that could be your 'main'.

If you have absolutely no preference or play them all about the same, then whichever class you feel most comfortable using could be your 'main'.

I could see where if you LOVED Nightblade you could call that your main. But if you're ambivalent, I could also see you saying Magsorc is your main, since you have the most time spent in that role and can do the best (to the point you're even tired of it).

Like @jaws343 and @Grizzbeorn said, the issue is not as easy as it seems. It’s a decision based on which class to spend the majority of our time and (possibly) money. Some here have even admitted that they feel “locked” to their main solely because of the amount of time they have on it, but would have picked a different class for “x” reason(s). It’s like buyers remorse, in a way.

Since my game focus has shifted a bit, my consternation is to pick a class on the front end that I will sink more time in than I have on any other.
