Flying Mounts after Group Mounts Release

Their game-engine isn't designed for flight.
Heck, it's not even designed for ground-mounts, considering that your mounts cannot keep their speed constant over slight changes in terrain height, not to mention the infamous Loading-Screen if you move too fast across the terrain, or the "missing textures" that fail to load.

Their engine was never built for that, so it's unlikely that they'll ever implement it.

Now as for vampires having a "Swam of Bats" style mount that hovers over the ground, I'm all for that.

If you mean Flying as in floating a foot or two off the ground then that would work where you cannot circumnavigate obstacles that you normal would not beable to and you cannot use it to avoid enemies, think the Vampire Lord in Skyrim

    Would that make you happy?

In guild wars 2 if you don't control an area it is affected by a 'strong winds' debuff that knocks people out of the air and they fall to their deaths. That is their way of adding flying mounts to alliance battles.

I thought you could only use the warclaw mount in gw2 pvp.... You know... The mount they designed for pvp.....

That the case, their is no other mount in WvW. And no month at all in PvP (conquest).

I remember TERA developers claiming their game engine could not handle flying mounts too.

    ...Then they added flying mounts.

I remember even Blizzard saying they regretted introducing Flying mounts with the Burning Crusade expansion, how it diminished world pvp and made many zones feel small and less interesting. Hopefully flying is something ESO will never consider.

Eh, the bottom line reason I left WoW was because they did their dipsy-doodle with flying. Since the only time I did pvp in WoW was in a friend's guild on a pvp server, their "rationale" didn't make any sense to me. I loved flying mounts in WoW.... and I hated pvp. When they chose to limit flying the way they did, I quit subbing 7 accounts. And I've never been back.

I don't see any need for them in ESO personally.

I used to fly around a lot at pretty high speed in Morrowind, which I played on an Xbox.

But if I did it for too long, the game commonly crashed. :(

Only way I could see this working is if they ever fill out the map of Tamriel. So like... 10 years from now, maybe.

Whenever this is brought up, I always say this...

We can't even climb ladders in this game and you want flying mounts?

    so there that is again.

The game isn't designed for it and the reason you can't dive in the water is because the water is a thin plain texture layer. The lower part of your body is simply dangling below it (doing the swim motion of course) when you are swimming. There is no water or anything, just an open void with colored flooring. The engine can't do (or isn't well designed for) moving in the z axis.

So no underwater adventures, no ladder climbing and... no flying mounts/or aerial combat in ESO.

prolly a good thing, considering the buggy things we deal with in the current game.

I get why "flying" mounts won't work, but what is the problem with hovering mounts? Have them fly super close to the ground, so we can have the fantasy of flying without breaking the game. They could be like the gryphon pet, only in the air in a low glide while sprinting, and run the rest of the time. Coding wise it would literally just be a slightly taller than average mount.

well.. its just going to be a visual effect. its still a ground mount, but the legs so to speak are invisible so it appears as if its hovering. that's the only possible way I can see them implementing something like that, personaly.

and in that case - the more mount models, the merrier.

I mean. of COURSE. I just mean flying and swimming in 3 dimensions/axis is basically the same mechanic. so that is where I would start.

and you know, as much as hated vashjir in WoW, it was more due to how water would just distort everything, making it difficult to orient than actual 3d movement, and being able to explore, i don't know - sload caves or drowned dwemmer ruins could be fun.

Feel free to do a search for the numerous previous threads about flying mounts & why they won't be a thing in ESO, from Lore to game engine.

Yeah game engine probably couldn’t handle it and there’s definitely no flying mounts in ESO! None at all! Especially not in Cloud Rest! And there’s deff not an NPC riding a gryphon flying around you during the bosses! That’d break the lore!

Just to quote u on that, the lore in eso is the high elf’s were unable to fly gryphons but the welkynars which were trained high elf’s all ride on gryphons to combat. If you go to cloudrest, when fighting the boss after u have defeated the boss and move on to the next, you will see an NPC welkynar high elf flying outside of the arena area at the mini boss area. So yea npcs in eso do have flying mounts. And yes it is part of the eso lore in terms of the high elf’s in summer set and the welkynars. And yes dragon borns can tame dragons and ride on there backs in elder scrolls lore like miraak and dragon Born From Skyrim. And to all the people that did not read the OP. The flying aspect will be disabled in cyrodiil.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention the dwemer airships that are in elder scrolls lore, that would be a cool flying mount or group flying mount opportunity if it ever came on eso. start charging uber services in eso with dwemer airship lol

I would much rather want to see upgradable mounts (something like in Lotro) than flying ones.

Yeah, flying and gliding was really wesome there and it made traversing through maps much much easier :)

Are you sure you want ZOS to implement another "mount upgrade mechanism" other than we have currently? Because knowing them they will make it 180 days long grind with very convenient soultion in crown store for only 15k crowns ;)

Yep even thought you couldn’t fly through entirety of the map due to flying restriction zones, but you were able to glide even from the smallest cliff🙂

It was well implemented in Aion’s rich fantasy world, shame that game died after Gameforge took over. Well it’s still alive and gets updates, but i bet population is way scarce on Na/eu servers

The areas in this game are not designed to accommodate flying. There are invisible walls in many locations you would not expect. It would also allow bypassing of certain quest related barriers. The designers would have to do an extensive rework of zones to make this functional.

So? Instead of adding another zone/chapter following the same boring schema lets make all zones we have a bit more spicy! Instead of creating new zone, rework the old ones. I think it could beat all chapters we already have. Imagine possibilities, new dungeons, trials, areas in zones etc. etc. Sky literally would be the limit.

NCSoft created amazing game but Gameforge as always monetised it and milked it till the game almost died, they do it with every game they touch.

...and I miss some Aion solutions like flying and gliding, rifts, dredgions, 1v1 arenas.

    OP.

Your comment on the Dragonborn in Skyrim.

    Two things here.

One, that game world was built for absolute freedom to explore, hence the famous mountain over there quote.

Secondly, the lore perspective. Dragons in Skyrim aren't the Dovahkiin's pets. As far as they are concerned the Dovahkiin is literally a Dragon. Dovah are not animals. They are sentient brings, a race like men and met and actually, stand higher. They are literally immortal, and have existed since time began.

As for Gryphons? The Welkynars are a very elite order. They are also tiny. And really do only allow Altmer to join.

The fact is that flying is very rare in Tamriel. The closest that a civilisation got to making it normal was with Dwemer airships.
