It's more a question of infused vs precise, but I think precise wins out for most people.

It's more a question of infused vs precise, but I think precise wins out for most people.

I’m a fan of infused myself. Have my spell crits over 60% on my magplar and MagDK. Above that it starts to run into overkill a bit. So I run double infused lightning staves on magplar and double infused inferno on my MagDK. I do a lot of bar swapping also, mostly because I solo often. When doing trials I swap a few skills because I spend a lot more time on 1 bar and some skills are redundant with the group utility.

I even run double infused on my DW stamwarden. Poison and beserker enchants. That build is hitting 80% crits. I solo more content with this than my 2 mag toons, but with group utility it can crit close to 100%. It’s a nasty little build.

In a good trial group, there really isnt much of a debate. Precise front, infused back. If you are solo, you can make an argument for a lot of things. In a mediocre 4 man group, precise might be out performed by infused, nirn or even sharp, depending on the composition of said group, but you are splitting very small hairs. I generally recommend you build for a trial group unless you plan to make multiple sets.

Magcros are an exception, they should run nirn/infused front bar because if they run precise you will lose a lot of damage in execute because the bone knell passive grants you 100% crit with 3 abilities from the tree on. Otherwise though in trials its definitely precise front bar.

My mag templar "Healer" has always been an extra dps, but after the recent updates I'm doing a lot more damage than usual.

I use Nirnhoned destro & Precise resto, with SPC, BSW, Infused spell damage jewels & whatever undaunted set. The resto shield skills set off infernal guardian all day. Raining fire & incinerating everything is always fun  especially when you're the healer.

spell crits over 60% on my magplar and MagDK. Above that it starts to run into overkill a bit.

Crit chance is overkill only when you go over 100%.

So let's say you're a magplar. Everyone's base Critical Hit Damage (CHD) is 50%. Plus 10% Piercing Spear (Templar class passive). 20% (well, 19.8) from divines Shadow mundus. 20% from having 56 points in Elfborn CP star.

So your CHD will be 100% all the time, just from passive sources of CHD. That means a critical hit does 100% more damage.

If you add in 10% Minor Force (from either Fighter's Guild trap or Psijic Acceleration), that means you can get 110% CHD, and it's not hard to keep Minor Force up close to 100% of the time.

If there's a War Horn going on, your CHD can temporarily boost up another 15% to 125%.

But let's assume no War Horns. Only passive CHD and Minor force. That means every crit does 110% more damage. Precise is 7% crit chance. That means Precise will, on average, add 7.7% more damage (multiply it with CHD).

So how much spell damage would it take to add 7.7% more damage? Well, let's say you have 2.5K spell damage and 40K max magicka, so your effective SD (converting max magicka to SD equivalent) is 6309, and 7.7% of that is 486.

So, for someone with 2.5K SD, 40K max mag, and a 110% CHD, they'd need to add 486 spell damage to be equivalent to Precise.

If someone is using Thrassian, the balance tips even more strongly in favor of Precise.

So... just use Precise in PvE. Unless you're at 100% crit chance, there's no such thing as "too much" crit.

I wouldn’t recommend Nirnhoned on any class. It’s way underpowered on staves, especially with the Thrassian meta. Precise is great for both single target and cleave, and Infused has a few uses (Magcro staying at 100% crit, prismatic against Daedra/undead, flame for solo Burning uptime).
