There's an icon for your alliance next to your character's name in the list on the right.

Oh good grief. I never noticed that.... There was always just the big banner....

Lol ty!! I will look for that next time. I do wish the banners were still there though.

Depends - I favored the snowy BG for my char in the Pact, but the desert wouldn't really fit my character in the Covenant.

I'd prefer chooseable ones. Especially since I have a few characters who are of one race, but live in another province so a 'racial' background wouldn't really fit either.
