The story is that the Xivkyn acts as a Puppet Master, possessing the Vestige from afar. This Vestige happens to be a Breton Mag Sorc, so I can use the Dark and Daedric skill lines, but using a poly means you can pick any race/class combination you like.
It all works through Mysticism and Illusion. The backstory fits into some holes in game's plot line. From a Lore point of view it is completely bullet proof. And it's a lot of fun. Playing as a covert minion of Molag Bal puts a new spin on the story lines, and gives me some additional objectives such as soul trapping as many interesting enemies as possible, especially bosses. This character will be my Antiquarian after U26, mainly because none of my other characters would have any interest in such things.
This is him posing with his library of souls in his manse on the Surreal Estate:
Here he is with his prize possession, the gem containing the Vestige's trapped soul:
Why would a minion of Molag Bal want to defeat Molag Bal? Especially as they are in essence an extension of Molag Bal himself.
Molag Bal was not defeated. Bal is a God, the God of Schemes. He plays a long and complex game. Molag Bal doesn't see things in the same way that any "tiny mortal mind" sees them. He has different priorities. Like Meridia says, in many ways this all played out in Molag Bal's favour.
This is the start of my character's back story, there may be some Main Quest spoilers:Starts off with the usual story. Molag Bal identifies Mannimarco as an existential threat. He decides to keep this enemy close, and so forms an alliance with Mannimarco. Molag Bal‘s primary objective in all this is to play Mannimarco and, in the fullness of time, to own him. Bal will also take advantage of the opportunity this scheme provides to break free of many of his own anuic entanglements with the destiny-bound Mundus (he's over-indulged and it's cramping his freedom of action).
The Soul Burst occurs. Not one of Bal's objectives in itself, just a means to an end.
Molag Bal captures the Prophet, invades his mind and learns all his prophecies. Bal learns the precise details of Mannimarco’s plan to usurp him using the Amulet of Kings. He also learns that a great hero will arise in Cold Harbour in the form of a Soul Shriven Vestige. Bal plays Mannimarco by helping the Prophet and the Vestige find and retrieve the Amulet of Kings. Mannimarco is taken down.
The Amulet of Kings will then be used to free Molag Bal from the vast majority of his anuic entanglements with the Mundus both by undoing the Soul Burst and by empowering the Vestige sufficiently to knock all those swallowed souls out of Bal’s person. Molag Bal never intended to swallow the whole of the Mundus. It was not his goal. Bal is a Padomaic entity and wouldn't want to be weighed down by all the nasty Anuic stuff the Mundus contains. To him that stuff's like poison.
For Molag Bal that is a win-win situation.

Can you back up your backstory with official lore? Character quotes, books, etc.?
