Will We Ever Get A Monk Class?

You know; fights with kicks and punches, uses punch daggers and cestus?

Heck, since most classes (and feel free to call me on this; I'm still learning some ropes off and on) seem to have 3 trees: a tank, a DPS, and a heal. This idea is still general:
Uses Stances (attacks that change the M1 & M2 attack animations)

Tank Monk: Attacks pull higher Aggro. Skills in this line also pull aggro in an area. uses Stam.

Heal Monk: Skills focus, of course, on heals and AoE heals. Uses Magika

DPS Monk: Skills focus on multi-hit attacks. He's a single-target DPS character. Uses Stam.

As I said, it's still just a general idea, but I'd love a class that uses punches and kicks.

Considering that the classes we have now are imbalanced, i think adding a new class anytime soon is not a wise move. But i do understand where you are coming from and while i don't like Monks as a class in any game. I think having more classes is never a bad thing. But for now, i think they should just stick with what they already have and maybe add in a new race, since we haven't had one in like ever

New race is NEVER, ever going to happen. This is not a normal MMO. No other races have ever been playable in any of the TES games.

I would bet real life money that they never add such.

I would not disagree with more races..but what? What races are there that have not at least made an appearance? I mean, don't get me wrong; I'd kill to be able to make a quadruped khajiit and go all Sif on the evils of the world.

But I cannot think of any unseen races, though my lore knowledge is kind of weak.

I'm so not into the whole monk thing. I didn't like it in WoW (even though I LOVED Pandaria, and - well, I quit playing shortly thereafter....) and I'm not into it anywhere. But hey, there would be people who would love it, so yeah. Consider me a vote "for".

Well, half the playable classes in the game are based on classes from Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion (and technically Skyrim, which uses classes internally to determine skill levels for NPCs). Monk has been a playable class in Elder Scrolls games since Daggerfall; in theory, the class is supposed to use the Hand-to-Hand skill against foes and supplement fists with defensive magic and nimble dodging, represented in-game by the Unarmored skill in Morrowind and the high-level Acrobatics dodges in Oblivion. In practice, using fists rather than weapons or offensive magic has never been particularly viable unless you're role-playing, since the developers seemed to view Hand-to-hand as a last resort rather than as its own strategy.

So lore-wise, a Monk class would fit into the game. There are many NPCs, particularly in the Eslweyr chapter, who are monks skilled in martial arts. But given that the developers usually include either a class or a skill line in chapters, I doubt a Monk class would come with an unarmed skill line.

What might be an acceptable compromise would be to have the class' abilities resemble unarmed martial arts -- there are already abilities that hide the player's equipped weapon, such as Necromancer's Flame Skull or Sorcerer's Overload. That might be a nice contrast to many classes whose abilities are clearly magical. So, perhaps, a stamina-focused class without a lot of visual flair on its skills? And as for magicka morphs, those could be animated to wield a staff as a melee weapon rather than as a magical conduit.

I mained an iksar monk for 10+ years in Everquest before I stopped playing and loved it. While MOST of me would love to see a monk class(Tang Mo Monks! )in ESO(even if it wouldn't be the same) the cynical part of me looks at poo flinging dk and corpse juggling necros and wonder how badly a monk class would be implemented...

I don't want a Monk class. I want an Unarmed skill line!

Or maybe a Mythic item (Gauntlets of the Horny Fist? Bands of Kwang Lao? Gloves of the Pugilist?) that grants a two-handed weapon's worth of weapon damage when unarmed.

But I don't want everyone to use it, because Elder Scrolls is an IP that features martial arts without being dominated by martial arts. So I guess I want unarmed, but I also want it to be a little worse than our current weapon options?

There may be something wrong with me.

Hmmm.... But they could combine unarmed with bard. Because first, bards are making music, so they don't really have much weapon skill - dagger, short sword, small bow maybe. BUT - bards make spells using music. And because they're singing.... they have two good hands to use for punching, karate chopping, etc.

    Maybe....

I think FFXIV has done the best job with Monks, while WoW's version is too cliche and cartoony. I honestly do not think the aesthetic fits ESO and generally hope to not see it because it is a slippery slope.
I do not care how skilled you are with your hands, when most enemies are wearing metal armor or bone or hard boiled leather it is ineffective no matter what the Shaw Brothers say. To get past that it would require powers and new abilities that will quickly enter DBZ parody territory.

You might have to wait a couple years or more for that. But again, why not play necro or warden? I'm pretty sure it's gonna be the same reskinned 3-1 setup, like all newgen classes are.

I mean unarmed skill line would be interesting.

I don't think there are enough skills to fill out a whole class, to be honest.
Some of the NPCs in Elseweyr have monk skills, including some fire kicks, knock back punches and stuff. so you could have those. I feel like it would just be good as CC options and additional skills, you know just like the psijic order skill line.

Also, I'd love to have the alchemist ability the NPCs have, have a skill that changes what it does depend on the potion you have in your quick slot that would be fun as hell. Throw poisons (Well potions with negative effects), have a burst heal or group buff via a thrown potion, it has so many interesting possibilities, it would be kind of like spell crafting but balanced.

If ZOS can show some love to one of the least supported schools of magic in elder scrolls as a new class, I'm sure the least supported martial skill in elder scrolls could get one too.

I'd love a monk class, and I'd also love it if unarmed was given any attention in the next mainline game.

As useless of a Class as that bard bulls*ht some people want... Go play games where these already are and don't ruin this game with those.

Just stand somewhere and use /"insert instrument here" and you have your bard class and its as useful. And for the monk class just de-select your weapons and go punch enemies...

ffs ppl and their requests -.- why we just don't and some loud-ass tricycle and some 3 headed flying things and rename the game by adding World of.....

I would prefer to see it as simply an unarmed skill tree. The passives would be the strongest, but only apply when you wear no weapon. Simply to counter the stat loss you get from having no weapons.

    Like:
One with Armor: gives X ammount of magicka for each piece of light armor you wear, X ammount of stamina for each piece of medium armor you wear, and X ammount of health for each piece of heavy armor you wear. Bonuses only apply, if you have no weapon equipped.

Leveling the skill would also alter animations for unarmed attacks.

Default would be stamina damage. Could be morphed into tanking.

Example: Charging punch. Charge to enemy, and deal damage.
morph1: Flying kick. Deal more damage, and stun enemy for 3 second.
morph2: Taunting punch. Half cost paid from magicka, drastically reduce total cost. Taunts enemy.

Focused attacks: for 20 seconds increase critical chance.
morph1: focused rush. For 10 second guaranteed critical strike with each attack.
morph2: focused defense. Lose critical chance increase. For 20 second blocking costs 50% less stamina, and more efficient. (Makes blocking effiency equal as if you were had a shield)

Not really possible within the ESO game system.

Because here we have Free Weapon & Armor Selection!
And the basic "monk" premise is unarmed "mystic punchings" combat... which due to the aforementioned selection freedom for weapon skill lines would have to be available to ALL classes.

We could get the bits and pieces to build the archetype tho. Unarmed skill lines of varying usefulness and type. Melee support passives guild skill line like TG/DB. Possibly even an evasion-centered "unarmored" armor skill line.

Then take a templar, add all those "unarmed" combat skill lines, mix the punches with golden magic and yell "Hadouken" every time you fire off some sunfire or "Final Flash" when using the jesus beam... it would perfectly fit the "buddhist warrior-monk" archetype! ;)
There could be others as well, duh... in every class flavor! Do Quan Chi from Mortal Kombat as a necromancer monk, or Raiden as sorceror monk, or Scorpion as DK monk (Get Over Here!)!

Only question is if the powers tha tbe want this, and in which way they would let us do it if they so choose... I could totally see stuff like this coming with an "Akaviri" themed expansion someday!
And yes... been there, had some thoughts on the matter: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/371862/additional-weapon-skill-ideas-mk-ii/p1 ;)
    Noxavian wrote: »

    Bulls... uhm... not entirely accurate!

The elder scrolls series started with -eight- races, and then in TES-III:Morrowind, they let people play as Orcs and Imperials, which were not playable before. TES-Battlespire even only had six races, missing the khajiit and argonians.

So, the precedent of adding races not playable before DOES exist in the elder scrtolls series. Only question would be... which races? Since any races added would have to exist in the game lore, and be viable for player characters...

So, once again, it will depend on the powers that be, and if they think selling more races in the crown store much like the imperials in ESO will be worth the effort!

But that is another discussion, and one I have had before: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/422285/new-player-race-possibilities/p1 ;)

They could do bard and monk in the same class if they made it more like the Chanter in Aion. Have a skill line more focused on melee physical staff attacks for dps, another line on buffs/debuffs/regen/off heals for support. A third line for... something else lol.

I cannot see Bard or Monk coming along as a class in this game. The reality is a Monk is simply an unarmed combatant that uses mythical forces. Any class skill could be classified as mythical. The only thing to get monks into the game would be adding an unarmed skill line. As for Bards, same thing. Just add a guild skill line and include one or two abilities where the player cannot do anything but use that ability to provides said buff. And while it is being used it drains the player stamina or magika resource.

These two added skill lines would cover both Monk and Bard without the need to add another class into the game.

Also for those of you stating Everquest, etc.... please keep in mind without the creation of D&D many of these games would not be here today. D&D actually had monks for quite a while and that is the game where it all started.

Might be a Class in the future, think it would have a different name to fit into ESO lore more.

Also I do think we won't have another class for a while, I would be surprised if we get one next year.

Interesting concept tho of a class.

It would be better as a "unarmed" skill line.

Don't forget that a class is the permanent forgoing of all the other classes' skills. More classes means more commitment when you first roll the character, because the one thing that will never happen is class change.
