Removal of Inactive accounts.

Whilst I understand that this is in general a good thing as it will help logging in and server stability (I think?).

There are a couple of things that need looking at by ZOS before this is implemented.

Firstly, guild GMs.
If a GM of a guild has been away for the period that constitutes as inactive what will happen with the guild?
Will it be automatically disbanded or will it cause glitches within the guild framework?
I think that an officer from the guild should be auto promoted to stop any issues from occuring.

Next, is housing.
Most guilds are using someones primary house as a guild house; full of crafting stations etc.
If this person hasn't logged on for the specified period the guild will lose its house.
Unless using somebodies house could class them as active or each guild GM could message ZOS somehow and classify which persons house is the guild house and get that account locked so as not to be deactivated.
Guild housing could put a stop to this but seeming as it doesn't exist yet :(

Inactive accounts are being moved to 'Cold Storage', not deleted. Which, hopefully, will serve the same purpose while also allowing people who had to step away for extended amount of time to come back. They'll just have a very long startup time as their account get retrieved from storage.

Inactive accounts are not going to be deleted. Just moved to a different storage to keep the “active” database clean. It’s been stated before that the only change would be a much longer load time when you return to eso.

Um. Inactive accounts are not being removed. They're just being put in "cold storage". They're still there, they will always be there, they're just stored separately from the accounts that are active, and if they become active again, they'll be moved back out of cold storage.

I understand that they are not being deleted but I assume they are being removed from the active server and stored on a backup.

Therefore, if that is the case, we will not be able to access their data and neither will the game until they return.

    I hope I am wrong.

Since the character went into cold storage, it'd be kind of fitting if the house filled up with angry frost atronachs every now and then...

ZOS has not fully given us details, but if you lose a guild home, find another guild with an active gm! Why would you keep a dead guild?

If a gm didn’t pass leadership before not logging in for months, well....

Yeah you're not getting deleted. The data that constitute your account is neatly packed up and put on a digital storage shelf if you're way for I think it is 6+ months. If you ever return to the game the first time you log in the server then goes to that metaphorical cupboard, retrieves your package and unpacks it. This means the login time for your first login after being away takes a little longer, but that's it.

That said I've never heard mentioned what happens to house data. Is that packed up and shelved too? If so how when like in this example a player house is used as a guild hall?
    Anyone heard anything about this?

@ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_JessicaFolsom is this something that's been discussed and if so how do you all plan on dealing with it?

Since the "guild house" is usually just a player's main residence decked with all the amenities, passing guild leadership to someone else will not do anything about their home. The attunable crafting stations are bound to account once tuned, so you can't just send them to the new guy.

That said, I don't think this will be a problem, but ZOS could prove me wrong.

From the software development point of view inactive account/character are the ones which had their data not accessed in the database for a given timeframe, so they just take up space unnecessary in the active database and can be move out from there. This also means it not just the owner login onto the account but others interacting with it - an example porting into the main house - requires the server accessing the account's data, so that data need to be in the active database for such usage.

I personally don't expect the said cold storage will be implemented anytime soon as there are many such pitfalls along the way, which either would beak functionality due to the missing data or would require an on demand data restore ability where the game need handle the client side too, what happens with the triggering action while the data being restored.

    It just struck me

If they can do this, then they can do platform and server migrations - because they must know what data goes where in order for cold storage to work

No, there are duplicate account and character names across platforms and servers. So, no way to combine platforms and servers.

The Off Line Storage is still attached to each mega server. The difference is, not all accounts are being loaded, just the ones that are active.
