Tank training advice

I have found that the base game WBs are a good metric for your average vet dungeon survival rate. Not necessarily representative of boss fight in vet DLC dungeons, but it's a good starting point for refining your character.

Armor, health, taunt, and some sort of renewable damage mitigation, like shields or healing spells, are a good idea to include in your build.

Surprisingly enough, magicka regen is pretty valuable as a tank since a lot of survival abilities are magicka based.

Beyond that, have a good working knowledge of mechanics, taunt things regularly, and focus your efforts on the things that hit the hardest. Don't try to taunt everything because inevitably the things that hit hard enough to thrash the squishier characters will go off and kill your healer before you can regain control of it.

Thanks again for all the advice and replies, really appreciate it.

I tanked some vet dungeons on activity finder. Arx Corinium, City Ash 2 and Falkrerh Hold.

You were right, this is definitely the way to learn! It was hard but very enjoyable and learnt a lot this way!!

Already seeing where I can improve build etc.

    Thank you

A bit late to the party, but skip normal, go straight to vet.

Normal doesn't teach anything. If anything, players might pick up bad habits from normal. In order to learn, you need to be able to receive feedback about mistakes. The problem is, the game's feedback in normal is muted. I can tank every normal dungeon--even DLC ones--as a light-armor DD with a taunt on my back bar. You can't learn that way.

Not all vet content is created equal; there is a spectrum of difficulty. Start with easy vet dungeons and work your way up to the DLC ones. But whatever you do, don't waste your time in normal.

Thank you all for the replies much appreciated.

Did a few dungeons, went well I think. I asked for feedback, most of it was positive. Two people said my DPS was to low?

Those people do not know what a Tank is. If your doing more than 2k to 4k DPS, your not doing your job. And, the only reason you are doing any DPS is Heavy Attacks for resource regen and Puncture does some damage.

Pretty much this. Those players who said your dps, as a tank, was low lack some basic understanding of the game.

If the DPS felt the groups dps was low then they need to look into the mirror for the first person to blame. Some of the worst tanks I have gotten in pugs were ones that tried to dps. Not only were they bad tanks but they were also bad dps.

    1. Taunt
    2. Make enemy face away from your team

Congratulations! You are now a god at tanking.
Some people may rush normal dungeons and make it seem as if they don't need you but that's okay. All you gotta do is step 1 and 2.
Occasionally, you may want to give your team a shield or stun smaller enemies so they don't touch your team.

As long as you have a half decent gear setup - at least purple crafted sets - I would say go ahead and jump into vet base game dungeons (DLC dungeons I would only start doing when you're more comfortable in your tank role). Normal dungeons will teach you next to nothing.

A group of guildies/buddies will obviously accommodate you more than a PUG, but base game vet dungeons are easy enough to tank that you shouldn't find yourself in much of a predicament.

I've seen people tank vet dlc trials in purple gear. I don't think legendary gear is as much a requirement for tanks as it is for other roles.

What I meant is that for any vet dungeon, the least a tank (or any other role) should take is a set of purple gear. Mismatched gear in a vet dungeon is basically asking to be carried. It's not hard to make a basic gear set and improve it to purple. Golding gear is a bit more expensive and I can understand if some players don't do it; it's also not absolutely necessary, but every bit helps if you want to do as well as you can.

The bottom line is, it's pointless trying to learn from normal dungeons, and for vet dungeons people should take the time to think what is expected of them and make an actual build. Or they can be one of those players who feel they are entitled to play as they want and still succeed at everything... :)
