Does anyone actually use the number row keys for abilities?

How does mouse control movement? I don't know, see for yourself? Really, I'm in a situation where I just can't answer to this question because it is so...mind blowing. How is it possible that you can't move your mouse? To me it seems you are so set in your way of doing things you can't get out of that mind set and believe it is the only way to do things and anything else is impossible and doesn't exist.

    Many, many people don't strafe.
Let's do a little experiment: log into ESO & do nothing but move your mouse around — did your toon move anywhere? At all? Nope, the camera moved while your toon remained stationary. Why is that? Because the mouse controls the camera, it does not control movement. If you actually want your toon to move, you need to use either WASD or some other method that you have come up with & bound yourself. By default, W moves you forward, S backwards, and A & D move left & right respectively. Allow me to reiterate: [by default] the mouse controls the camera and WASD controls movement.

As far as you not understanding why people strafe, that's fine. If you're happy only being able to aim & cast abilities in the direction you're moving, more power to ya — I couldn't care less. (And if you haven't figured out why that's incredibly limiting after playing games for 15 years, you likely never will.)

In any case, there's no need to be condescending — especially when you're 100% wrong. Once you've picked your jaw up off the ground from me "blowing your mind," try googling "Dunning-Kruger effect."
    Regards

I give up. Happy Googling to you.

Why can't you explain a simple thing? You can't give up on something that you never even tried to do.

Either you're not talking about the default controls or you're just plain wrong.

It is very interesting topic. Everybody has to do researches by himself. I've spend a lot of time in the past doing test, trying to find optimal key configuration.
    My current keybinds are:
    Q - skill 1, non-spammable
    R - skill 2, ground ability or "maybe-spammable"
F - skill 3, ground ability or spammable
    M1 - skill 4, short buff 1
    M2 - skill 5, any buff
In short, the core buttons (hot ones, often used) are "R", "F", and maybe "M1" (depends on build)
    automove - V
    Use quick slot - Tab
Switch bar 1: mouse wheel up
Switch bar 2: mouse wheel down
Ultimate - Z (not ideal, if you have additional buttons on mouse, experiment with them)

PS: it is complicated topic, not so obvious, but only if you are not a casual gamer...

@Naftal I can only assume that guy is trolling you or just a REALLY bad player of First Person Shooters as it sounds like he stops DPSing every time he needs to move.

As for the topic I use 1-5 + R for ultimate myself. Works fine. Using 2 is easy, you just use your ring finger. Being old school gamer my muscle memory makes it easy to use most keys while moving as long as they are in reach, 6 is just out of reach though hence using R for my ultimate. I even still managed to do FPS without my middle finger when I broke it fine so it's possible, though awkward.

    I use q(potion)+1-5+R for abilities.
As long as spammable is in #3 it works fine for me. I can always reach that button with some finger no matter which way I am walking.

How do you move forward (assuming you're still using a mouse)???

My muscle memory is primitive to say the least. I use the mouse buttons on my Logitech G700, but that interferes with fine control of the mouse, because my left thumb is constantly moving off the side of the mouse to press an ability button. It is better than trying to work with WASD and 1 to 6 at the same time with one hand though. Practise doesn’t help that much.

I really miss being able to mouse-click abilities on the skill hot bars like in other games.

    .

I have no idea how this would work. In either PvE or PvP

3 is easy, index finger works well. For 2 I either use the ring finger or put index finger on W and middle finger on 2 depending on what I pressed before. I also strafe a lot with A & D, especially around bosses and in PvP, and which makes pressing 2 easier. (index on D, middle on 3, or ring on A, middle on 3). On top of that, I use a mouse button for auto run, which frees up the middle finger from W and makes pressing 2 & 3 even easier for me. I use both depending on the situation for some reason.
My most spammable skills are always on 1 & 3, while 2 is usually reserved for things like AoE dots, combat opener or leeching strikes that I don't have to press as often. Use R for ult, Q for usables, mouse for weapon swap and auto move.
This post was actually the first time I've reflected on why I place my skills the way I do, I've done it subconsciously when I started playing.

Whatever finger happens to be free at the time clicks the number ability for me, if I'm going forward then probably my ring finger will press 1-2, or my index finger will replace pressing w for a split second for the middle to press 3, or index presses 4-5. It's hard to tell though because I just kinda do it instinctively, but there is some restriction in mobility for me, like, doing perfect circles around someone in PvP while doing a rotation of keys 1-5 would probably be difficult and the circle would probably be more of a rectangle, so I'm sure an MMO mouse would probably be a lot better in that situation, but for any less complex movement it can get pretty seamless.

It's probably just a circumstance of being used to something over time - as I don't think I'd fair too well if I switched abilities over to mouse buttons right away (but I am starting to move things like weapon swap, roll dodge and now bash/break free to the mouse, which is nice).

It can get a bit hairy when you are hitting W and D to do a diagonal strafe and want to hit skill 3, 4 or 5 but it's rare enough to not matter much. Same for holding W and A and hitting 1 or 2.

I never used nor will I ever use the actual numbered keys to play.

First and foremost, I find that stretching out your fingers to use those keys creates a delay and over time your hand gets very tired of moving around so often.

I like to use mice with at least 6 buttons on the side. As of right now, I have been using SCIMITAR (corsair) and I love it. I have multiple profiles as I play different games (mostly ESO). A newer version of the mouse allows you to move the mini keypad near your thumb to the desired location, providing you with even more comfort. Most of the games out there utilize all the numbered keys so using keys (6-= ) is nearly impossible.

    Huh?

    1. WTF is "trackpad bootcamp" and why would I need to go to it?
    2. How is this thread "irrelevant?" Irrelevant to what? This is the General Discussion forum, if the thread even tangentially relates to ESO, it's not "irrelevant."

In fact, literally the only irrelevant post in this entire thread is the arrogant & unhelpful one I am responding to.
