A developer somewhere may have thought this was funny or something.

Actually, the idea of using slaughterfish came from a fellow beta tester during the super secret 6 months 24/7 Psijic Order testing on what was then called the "Private Test Server".

You see, before the slaughterfish, ZOS simply used invisible barriers with a generic "You can't go there" message, which by all accounts was much worse than being eaten by slaughterfish.

Don't try and turn around, it takes too long. Just hit the reverse button and move the camera round .

I was going to say that I didn't think there were actual slaughterfish in the game. They're just a barrier/boundary. Like an invisible dev wall, but you can pass through and you'll take damage on the other side.

Thanks for the background info on it.

They can be annoying sometimes but idk that a visual indicator is necessary.

In real life, you don't always know where in the ocean potentially deadly marine life will be. Probably we should just be glad that the slaughter fish are ONLY used as a barrier and we can memorize where they are. Because the devs also could have made them come out of nowhere and be roaming if they were going for more realism. :p

In general: The river surrounding the Imperial City is death water.
The river outside the east AD gate is safe but closer to the ocean it's death water.
Anything that's not a river or ocean in Cyrodiil is safe. Also doesn't hurt to dip your toes in first and make sure.
