PSA For Templars: Disable Your Sacred Ground Passive

This has been documented in a few threads but the sacred ground passive is causing terrible stuttering and FPS drops and even ping spikes. If you play templar and having trouble with these things try disabling this passive. I know you lose minor mending and the snare but for me the increased performance was well worth it. It’s sad that we have to lose a passive just to play the game but here we are.

Update: I’ve noticed that ritual and rune and maybe more skills from that line still cause issues even with sacred ground disabled. The onset of the issues is just delayed. Something is seriously messed up with this line.

It seems that the game client is very poorly coded, certain kinds of lighting effects cause EXTREME framerate drops and stuttering.

For example, opening the blue glowing chests in the IC is extremely hard for me, because in the lockpicking minigame the framerate drops to about 5FPS and the "feedback" is greatly delayed, resulting in a lot of broken picks and failed time limits.

A similar problem happens with the DK banner ulti: when dropping the ulti on 10+ enemies, the game locks up completely for over half a second because of the bugged lighting effect being rendered on a large number of mobs.

I’ve also discovered that there still seems to be a memeory leak associated with ritual or rune. Disabling sacred ground helps stave it off but it eventually comes back.

I think the solution is for Zos to fix it. Asking an entire class to not use advantageous passive is not likely to happen. Just saying, not arguing there is an issue.

Obviously I agree, but they haven’t even acknowledged it and it was reported firs over two months ago. I’ve already made a bug thread with video samples and tagged the devs in it I’m just trying to help people get along till then.

i can't be the only one who initially thought this was a veiled attempt to get idiots to actually disable a strong pvp passive right? :P

Haha sadly no. I am a Stamplar main and have a magplar alt. I’m a bit newer to it but have been maining Stamplar for about a year now and it’s my favorite class and it’s sucks this is going on. I’ve got multiple videos of what it’s like after an hour or so of playing.

There are still a number of memory leak triggers in this game (even outside of templar skills). I'm hoping all of this will be addressed in update 24. They said this update will include an overhaul of the game's memory management system.

You not welcome lol. For me the performance literally gets so bad I cannot play so sacrificing that passive means I stay alive.

I hope so, though even another month of this or whatever makes me shudder.

The worst for me is when I'm picking it and some idiot throws shards or lightning flood on it, like we can't already see it.I always see the frame rate drop in those instances.

The framerate drops seem to be quite "random" with respect to individual PC setups.

In my case for example, lightning flood, shards, etc. - no significant framerate drop.
Even the pre-Scalebreaker AoE-fest in primetime PvP wasn't really affecting me any more than the usual Cyrodiil lag does.

But having just ONE of those stupid blue IC chests visible on the screen totally tanks my framerate. And the DK banner ulti... well, it's a lucky coincidence that I don't play any DK characters (except for 1 DK mule alt).

It took Zos how long until they acknowledged the new and improved in-combat bug they introduced last year and how long afterwards until they fixed it? Heck, they never even pinned the thread where they acknowledged it to the Dev Tracker.

But again, I seriously doubt many will chose to drop such an advantageous passive. Not knocking your attempt. Just keep the heat on Zos.

    Wait, what? It's been fixed?
Are we even playing in the same Cyrodiil, then? I got stuck in combat for many minutes, AGAIN, as recently as yesterday...

PvE only magplar healer on PC NA here who lives in her house of Extended Ritual and Channeled Focus with all passives. Though I've noticed no problems, thanks for the heads up so if I do begin to notice problems I may have an idea what the source might be.

Yeah.. Put it on the to-be-look at list. Maybe sometime after next chapter patch and updates.

On the subject of abilities causing stutters, is anyone else experiencing stutters or frame drops from the ability "Turn Evil"? It's the ability that casts a glowing white rune on the ground. I started using it on my DK recently, and I subconsciously began avoiding the character just because of the annoying stutters. Even experienced this before I started using this ability; during a duel (against a player who used it) in an empty house.

    Working fine for me.

Even when some random player casts it under a full raid (24 players) stacked on an objective flag in PvP, no framerate drop or other performance degradation.
I also used it in PvE a bunch of times last week - and again, no performance problems with it.

I'm a PvE stamina Templar and I do use Ritual of Retribution in my rotation (it's pretty good damage/heal/purge if you can sustain it with Soul Trap). I've come across these random drops in my frame rate, which for me isn't terribly unexpected, though it usually stays around 20, but it's only been getting worse. Trying to fight mobs or bosses in vSS has been, at times, disastrous.
Saw these few threads about this, thought about it, and tested it out; indeed getting rid of the Sacred Ground passive made my game run smoothly and all the while I get to keep my extra damage and heal.

Whether specced for PvE or PvP, as a healer, magicka or stamina Templar or even as a tank, it might be worth checking in to if you're getting some bad frame drops. But ZOS needs to fix this fast; this means we all lose out on a beneficial passive just so we can play regularly. It just ain't acceptable.

This started happening to me about 3 or 4 days ago. Maybe since the last Monday morning patch? Idk. Had a few happen on stream where I literally went to 0 fps... and I have a separate, dedicated streaming computer so no, it’s not the streaming that’s causing it.

Disabling the “Action Duration Reminder” addon had a huge impact in helping me with the FPS drops.

Yes it’s definitely related though I don’t believe it’s the only cause. For me I noticed still a drop in performance after about another hour. Keep tabs on how you do without that addon after some time. Ultimately I think there’s a deeper issue with that skill line and ADR just exacerbates it.

    You should Update ADR. ;)

So many abilitys have been revised with Update 23, also 2 new "Librarys" for ADR. You need to download them to fix/update the Addon.

The latest version may be the worst. Rolling it back around 3.1.3 helps a little but disabling it is best though still not a complete fix.
