I learned as a boy to navigate unfamiliar terrain with a compass and a map. Never need to stop and check a map every 5 minutes. In game, it is just as easy, if not easier for me. I also like the very minimalistic look that it provides, while still giving good information on the compass bar.

That being said, I am not opposed to them adding one for players who prefer them. Just hope it is a toggleable option and not shoved down peoples throats.

On a related note, I have noticed that many of the people who use them are also those prone to getting lost more frequently. Perhaps this can provide an opportunity for players to develop a neglected skill set.

My wife has a GPS in her car, and she still gets lost IRL. Not everyone will have the ability to develop that neglected skill set.

My guess is performance issue is why they took the original mini map out.
    Not to mention screen clutter.

Actually in a recent interview with Matt, Rich, Gina, and Jessica they had changed to the compass from the minimap after the release of Skyrim to keep it more thematically inline with the latest Elder Scrolls game.

The game is better without a minimap..
and I'm pretty sure they suspected someone would create an addon for minimaps.

Same here, indeed I don't use any addons at all.

If a mini-map were to be added it should be optional.

For me the minimap is just a means to an end: I need the minimap so I can use the add ons that show me nodes, books, skyshards and basically everything farther (further?) out than the compass.

Yes, it definitely should be optional. I play on both PC & Xbox and have never needed, nor wanted, a mini map. TBH I hate the things in games - they clutter the screen & most of the time I have trouble following them anyways. I always turn them off if I can.

Besides, after 5 years in ESO I'm so familiar with the zone landscapes that I could get to where I wanted to go blindfolded. :D

I do understand though that it may be helpful for new players.

7 years and still no minimap available by default. Only possibility is to use addons.

    I think ZoS should:
    1. rework the map code because it has weird performance impact.
    2. add a minimap to the game by default,

that way consol players can experience a true mmo game

It might be different now, but... the minimap addons were also one of the main issue with bugs.

You would figure that a minimap would be easy to implement. It seems it's at odds without something in game though.

The Minimap by itself is not bugged. Votan explained himself that one of the library is bugged and he already asked the author to check it.

And not everyone encouter the crash problem. I do not. I can change my settings without any problems

I don’t feel that a mini map should be forced on anyone, but it does help immensely with situational awareness. Many dungeons and zones have fairly confusing design and it can be easy to become momentarily lost.

I have found the mini map even useful in places like vMA, as it aids with positioning in symmetrical arenas. I have never noticed any sort of performance hit on a range of computers, and I run addons that display much more than the default map shows.
