This is something myself and a few different groups of mine have discussed time and again now. Elder Scrolls in general has pretty much entirely overlooked cloaks as something that even exists. Luckily mods exist in other games such as Skyrim to fix that little issue, but obviously there's nothing to fix that in ESO.

Cloaks seem like something that would be very easy to implement, maybe with some tweaks here or there for different kinds (like thicker fur cloaks for nords and orcs up in cold northern areas, but more linen cloaks for places like Elsweyr or Valenwood).

Cloaks could be equipped the same as things like disguises and guild tabards into the Appearance slot on characters as more aesthetic pieces rather than gear slot pieces.

They tried, cloaks were in alpha. The physics just never come out right. Either looks like a piece of cardboard attached to your shoulders or they had to staple them at the waist like the Breton hero costume. Either way, they clipped so horribly zos didn't even put them in the beta.

Just not possible with how they built the game unfortunately.

This gets brought up every now and then. Would be dope, but it isn't going to happen b/c of the games engine.

Would be cool if implemented nicely (e.g., good movement on the cloaks, not too much clipping, reworking the stuff we carry on our backs like shields and staves), BUT what's the performance cost going to be like?
On our side you have another moving model plus another texture to load plus lighting to calculate between the cloak and the back of the armor.
On their side they are already planning to recode various abilities because of server cost so I don't know that they're particularly happy with the overall workload as it is.
Definitely test it on PTS before committing.

They wouldn't have any physics and would stick to your legs like the Breton Hero costume.

Lots of games don't have free-flowing cloaks - for a reason. ESO doesn't have them, either. And many of those that do have them, have issues with them. One game (Pillars of Eternity, iirc?) had to disable cloaks on Mac because they crashed the engine, or something like that.

    Implementing cloaks is not easy.

Except when you're talking about flat "cloaks" clinging to your backside like the Breton Hero Costume. It's a cloak, it's also dead ugly.

well, clearly warframe has proven that cloaks are possible, with real physics, etc.

Well, i can (must) buy the darkwood (?) sry, lol; blackwood expansion to get the companions, right? i'm looking into it right now.
If they gonna put companions in the game, i'm a fool to say no (and be a f2p peon grinder, lol; feel for u, i used to do to) ;#)

Rather than rehash ALL the reasons why ESO does not have capes/cloaks, I'll post the search result with 24 pages on the subject.....

There were cloaks in alpha and it was quickly dropped. Look for videos of the Breton Costume, it has a cape. Looks horrible.
This game engine is not set up for that kind of physics. Beating a dead horse here we are....

Pretty sure a cloak just helps to protect you from the rain.
They don't have any necessity or use in combat, and would most likely be removed in battle.
Plus they would just add more unnecessary collision / animations to an already overloaded server.

Before any implementation of cloaks, they need to fully implement inverted kinematics. As of now, you have no flowing fabric, to the point the Breton Hero costume doesn't even look like the model. Every supposeddly long flowing fabric is just a blocky body part replacer, as was the case back in 2002 with original Morrowind.

Proper flowing fabric with inverted kinematics would solve the issue, but I don't even know if the current engine is capable of that... As of now, if we had cloaks, they'd be really blocky and ugly.

    This.

BtW, there is one leftover in the game - pay closer attention the next time you fight a lich...

But yeah, they had a choice between "bad looking cloaks" and "really bad lag", and decided to go with neither and no cloaks.
Sure, it would be nifty if we had neat cloaks... but we cannot really expect them until things change on the computer/engine performance side, a lot.
Maybe in twenty years, when ESO gets redone for whatever new supercomputer system they might have then? (I am still vexed Anime lied to us about the nerve gear release date... :p;) )

Oh yes. Let's get cloaks and capes. There aren't enough things that cause clipping issues. I'm sure everyone who uses sword and shield, or a staff, or bows, or a battleaxe, or a greatsword, or wears long hair will have no problems at all with flowing capes or cloaks.

Even though the cape that is in the game hangs like a board off your shoulders and is glued to your backside.

Yeah, cloaks would be awesome but only if Z manage to make them as great as the rest of the graphical content ofc.
I was playing Lineage 2 for about 14 years and since they introduced cloaks there, and we started to use it, I must say I felt abi t "naked" without it.

Anyway, Im into ESO now 110%, just love the game and I saw an early ESO video where I saw this character.
