Casual opinion on the Necromancer

uthandireb17_ESO
Hey there.

Maybe I'm too late and none of this matters. It's likely really.
Maybe the opinion of a filthy casual doesn't matter and it's all about those DPS meters and whatnot. Whatever. I'm just leaving my two cents after testing the necro on the PTR.

I was hyped for the class since it was announced. I have organised my free days from work so that I'll be able to play it right when it's released. Hell, I wanted a necro since ESO came out so many years ago. Of course I couldn't resist booting up the PTR and giving it a try. And I did try it. A bunch. I can see how it would play well with some sets and all that alas,...

It feels really lackluster from just trying it out a bunch. I'm not talking about the damage of it, the tankiness or the whatever, but about how it feels to play one. I didn't feel very necromancer-y, what with the short duration summons and a constant scramble to not waste corpses alongside abilities like the graveyard with self-synergy which just feels really clunky (try weaving that synergy in among light attacks. It's just... really clunky!). The only part that feels good is the healing spec, that one seems like a nice way to heal, and it may even convince me to give healing a try. Hell, I'd sooner go stamina/tank necro, but for the straight up necromancer feeling or class fantasy, you know, undeath and such as a magician... It's dreadfully boring. It's really just a sorcerer without permanent pets. The skull is a worse crystaline shard, the skeletal mage is just a pet you need to click ona cooldown that feels worse than the sorcerer ones and the exploding skeleton is again, clunky. Now a HUGE improvement would be letting us spam more summons at a time. Just let us unload as many as our magicka allows us, which really, at that cost, shouldn't be more than 4 or so at a time, but at least you'd enjoy playing the class.

I know it's late in the development, and I know I may just trigger some of the more sensitive forum dwellers with an opinion and I'm sure they'll let me know in the comments, but I do hope that maybe more of us casuals might mention that playing a magicka necromancer as it currently stands simply doesn't feel well. Please don't make it go down the path of the warden where you barely see any of them around anymore as the class just doesn't feel new or exciting.

At the very least, let us get more than 1 pet out at a time, because currently... I'm highly disapointed, not excited about the class.

    And as a casual that I am, I've posted this in the wrong place it seems. I'll toss it in here as well;

    Doing both is fine.

I agree there is a certain clunkiness with the class and there is a lot going on and a lot of it is time and positionally gated.

I kind of get the not having perminate summons but you do have that with Sorcerer already in game though, (which admittedly very popular).

So perhaps there are some abilities where the complexity should be toned down a bit, At least throwing a skull at the enemy is easy enough to understand.

Good to hear healing is good since I intend to make a healer (mostly because Argonian necromancers look cool)

I must say I feel pretty much the same. A traditional pet class without at the very least being given the option of having a perma pet feels gimped. It's pretty much just a dark sorcerer who uses death magics, more so then a master of undead spirits.

Healing is nice but I haven't yet compared it to the regular healing line that every class has access to.

Tbh it makes more sense (to me at least) to make Sorcs have non permanent summons and Necro should have permanent. Sorcs summon Daedra from Oblivion which, depending on the year/game, can either be permanent or temporary because of the rules of summoning etc. Like in Skyrim, Daedra summoning is temp.

For some insight, in the games lore, this is the chronology of the (major) games:
    1. 2E 583 ESO
    2. 3E 399 Arena
    3. 3E 405 Daggerfall
    4. 3E 427 Morrowind
    5. 3E 433 Oblivion - this is a focal point I believe
    6. 4E 201 Skyrim
I just realized that all the major releases came out in chrono order as well, aside from ESO. Huh, interesting.

With the destruction of the Amulet of Kings in TES 4, Oblivion I think technically can't access the world because of the barrier being sealed or whatever. That's why Daedra are hardly seen in Skyrim and summons aren't permanent.

Lore wise, it would make sense that permanent summons would be a think in ESO because of the events of Oblivion not happening yet, but it still kind of rubs me wrong. You should be inexperienced, therefore not able to permanently keep them up since I see this as straining work.

Necromancer on the other hand, should have permanent summons. Since you summon local dead bodies instead of demons from the Void, it's A TON easier to maintain.

Of course all the Sorcs are gonna reeeeeee about losing permanent pets, and people would cry that perma summons on Necro is p2w, but whatever. I'm just a dude, what does my opinion matter?

From lore perspective, I agree with you.

But if I look at the current gameplay of the necromancer class, I don't mind the non-permanent summons.

As a hardcore necromancer fan.....I agree with you OP. I too came to ESO in the beginning with the hope of creating a necromancer...my favorite style of playing. After watching countless videos/streams and reading through every necromancer thread...I have to agree with you. It doesn't look necromancer-y enough.

The short version duration pets are killing it for me. I understand not making them permanent pets aka Sorcs 2.0. But the mage/archer is on a 15 sec timer? 15 SECS??? My farts last longer than that. Make it 30 at least....or heck push it to 60 secs like some of the previous games.

Make blast bone into a zombie that melees and spits vomit and last for 15 secs. Have it explode once it gets killed or dies and do AoE posion damage. A bloated exploding zombie makes more sense than a freaking skeleton.

Make the ultimate (flesh atronach) a pet that last 20 secs and walks around with you instead of popping out the ground. Would go a long way to make the necromancer feel more necromancer-y.

Meh, ESO's class design is singlehandedly the worst aspect of this game. None of the classes truly convey their feelings very well. I wish they would scrap the whole system and allow us to spellcraft and skill up so we can make our own classes... you know... like a real elder scrolls game.

I 100% agree op. I don’t feel much like a necromancer at all. The class needs a perma pet. Even if just 1...

on one hand i agree...id love to have a permament lich or draugr lord as permament ultimate pet similar to the warden bear...at the same time it would be an issue with the justice system... and creating just another sorc or completly redesigning sorc in response would also be weird... so going from where the game was i think they did the best they could

I'm glad they made the summons nonpermanent. Hate the aesthetic of always dragging your pets around. Makes integrating into justice system that much easier.

In PVP, this class is going to have a fairly high skill cap with the corpse positioning. I'm liking that some folks already don't like the necro because that means there won't be as many folks running around as necros a while after launch.

Nah, I like the shorter duration and less pet focus. The double barring pet thing on sorcs is horrible.
    • uthandireb17_ESO
I'm actually fine with non-perma pets. Just let me spam them all over the place. Let me flot the battlefild with cheap skeletons, even if not an optimal rotation, just let me do it to have the feel like I'm actually playing a necro, not just a teal-tinted mage.

I may as well reiterate my old suggestion of being able to summon an unlimited number of minions but they're still not permanent and they consume corpses.

Necromancy isn't about summoning minions out of thin air, it's about reanimating the corpses of the fallen to do your bidding.
    • uthandireb17_ESO
Guild Wars 1 had this and it was great fun trying to maintain as many as you could. I fully support raising from corpses.
