I'd never really played fantasy RPGs (unless you count Temple of Apshai on the old TRS-80). Then one day I found Morrowind for Xbox in a discount bin at Walmart and bought it on a whim. Even though I had no clue what I was doing, I was very quickly hooked. My wife would watch me play, until she finally tried it herself. She then became a video game player just like me! We've both been Elder Scrolls fans ever since.
I was explaining a friend of mine what an ideal RPG for me would be like and he told me about TES4: Oblivion and how what i was saying was basically in that game, right after the end of shift of that day i went straight to buy it. Khajiit was my first race to play as, then Nord and Breton.
Oblivion- This is where I started. It is one of the greatest games I've ever played. While today is outdated as many games did things Oblivion started better, I still can't find the one who can replace it compleatly.
Morrowind- After Oblivion, I passed here. Game is clunky, not very attractive and unfairly hard...until you pass certain point. I still don't like combat system or animations (Sea Dogs released at the same time can tell you why), it was still amaizing.
Skyrim- It is the last game I played when it released and it is the only game that is both dissapointing and amaizing at the same time. It is amaizing because it is more polished Oblivion and dissapointing because it still failed to surpass Oblivion (perks are great, but why no attributes). It's still one of my favorites.
Redguard- Comic is great, it reminds me of Scorpion, story and lore are probably the best in the entire series. Yet game is bad. I am not sure what happened, but combat, controls, graphics (look at Half Lifecor Tomb Raider) are awful. There are some good voice actors, for example Redguard, Nord and Dunmer VA started here, but the other voice actors are emberassing. Returing to the island of Stros M'kai in ESO was like playing Redguard, but actuall good and enjoyable. I am writting this because if Bethesda ever considers remastering something, it should be that.
PS. I played Fallout 3 too. While it was good, problem was that it was just that: good. It was fun, but with strange sense of linearity (main quest + side quest instead of tons of questline that may as well be main quests), destructive and depressing enviroment and over emphasis on shooting rather then variety, it falls flat. It's even more strange considering that Fallout 3 was between Oblivion and Skyrim both games which I have very high opinion off. Let's hope Fallout 4 is better.
I was introduced to Morrowind by a friend at a lan party, back when I was playing Quake 3 in high-end international leagues. It was so very different than the shooters I had honed my skills in, but I totally fell in love with the game and played it solidly for 5+ years. The Quake scene diminished and I found I didn't lament its passing as much as I expected, as Morrowind nicely filled in the gaps. My main character that I use in all Elder Scrolls games was born then, and I got him to level 105 in those years. Big Basil has been with me every game since then.
I'm only sad that I missed the games before this.
RIP Atherton, my beautiful little gentle friend. I will miss you forever. Without you I am a hollow shell.
Tried Morrowind and didn’t like it. Almost didn’t give Oblivion a try because of that, but did, and fell in love. Skyrim was even better and consumed the majority of my free time.
I'm a gonna show my age...I've also played every TES game in between.....Morrowind was my fav. Skyrim was Number 2.... but I was a weee baby when I started.....;P
I never played any of the other games and still haven't. I was looking for a new game a year or so ago and ESO was highly recommended. After watching a few YT vids of game play I decided to take the chance and bought the game because I liked what I saw.
