The irony of it is, the majority of players from AUS & NZ play during the day when the US & EU are fast asleep, meaning that the game already has the empty atmosphere feeling.
What's even more ironic is that, a lot of people refuse to play the game because you don't support our region. They take one look at the ping & leave to find another MMO with developers that aren't as tight as ZOS.

The truth of it is, it's just another ***-poor excuse from ZOS to not have to invest any more money into the game than the bare minimum. The lack of performance & large QoL updates over the games life is proof enough.

The fact that it even took you this long to reply is just a slap in the face to every AUS & NZ player that puts up with your ***.

They didnt even post it here on their official forums, they dont give a rats ass
Insulting people on the internet is cowardly.

Maybe we are going about this the wrong way...

ZOS should artificially inflate everyone's ping to at least 350-400.

Espcially in PvP, no one can complain then. We've been dealing with it for years, and all those players that think they good cos they beat you with a 4 to 5 times faster response time, they're super pvp skills will adapt fast. I mean them beating you has nothing to do with that, we jus didn't 'git gud' enough and they are that gud.

    Win win for everyone.

Now that's an intresting idea lol

Why the hell do you think use akamai/whatever.
They must know what it would result to.
    Why keep using their service.
A lot if not all players hate them using it.

    Just bleeping dont get it.

The truth is that akamai is ripping you off and pissing off your customer base. To my oceanic brothers and sisters who want better ping please push ZoS to remove akamai its a *** poor service that is just leeching ping... :(

Can someone ELI5 what is Akamai and how does it effect things for us?.

It’s a ddos protection service, which is technically good, but basically it’s now routing traffic for Oceanic users in an inefficient way. More hops to the server means higher ping and more potential for packet loss and also guarantees that you need to pay extra for a routing service to be able to play this game. I think the negative impac affects different users on vastly different levels. It seems AU players get hit the hardest. From Thailand I noticed about a 30-50ms change way back when it was first implemented. With Mudfish I’m still able to keep my ping at a decent range but since Akamais implementation was what caused me to try Mudfish I can’t commwnt on the difference using a routing service before and after. I just remember not needing one and then absolutely needing one.

As a New Zealander, this is great news.

I would be so annoyed if they made an Oceanic server specifically because of exactly why they're saying they wont do it.

Thank goodness I wont be forced to decide which server to play on.

I think they are underestimating the number of players who would use it.

A conspiracy theorist could say that they like the fact that by keeping us on the other servers, we are propping up those server populations while the local players get some sleep. If they gave us our own server, the EU/NA servers would be pretty empty for 8-12 hours of every day.

I'm not surprised and I can't help but agree with ZOS's thinking.

Having played since 2014 and done Caldwell's Gold back in the day, I know full well how much fun you can have in a low or no population game - not very much at all.

Plus I enjoy playing with folks from the US - I bet alot of others do too. There are some great US players and fun people. It definitely gives some additional social value to the game experience.

Consequently, I think that even if they did implement an Oceanic server alot of players would stay on NA and plenty more would wish they had.

That said, whilst I've played consistently for more than 5 years now and ESO is a go-to form of entertainment for me, there's absolutely no way I could recommend the game to other Australians.

The performance is totally subpar for a commercial product.

I think what we need to do is push for better connections to the server - we KNOW ping has been much better in the past and that's what we should be asking for.

If the dDos protection is causing the clear degradation we are all seeing, we need to be focusing on getting that fixed. That's clearly as much as we can hope for.

Zos. Just don't use akamai please. It is the issue. Find another scrubber or force them to route us the shortest route like any vpn can.

So thats it then... maybe they should stop selling it in australia then if they cant provide a stable game. I’m sick of doing Hel Ra Citadel and Sanctum Ophidia, but those are the only playable trials for me. Crud. Anyone got an alternative MMORPG we can jump to?

Question for those who are more networking savvy than myself. If I use a VPN to connect to a server in Texas, will my traffic still be routed through Akamai in Singapore? Or through Akamai in the US somewhere?

There are a number of factors at play, but essentially with a VPN you will be routed directly to the USA over the shortest route possible.

This is why a VPN works better and why Akamai slows things down, as I will explain.

Akamai, which ZOS is using, is basically spoofing the game server IP address across the internet (Via multiple Prolexic DDoS Scrubbers,) so your connection will head to the closest point over the shortest route, which for us in the Oceanic/SEA region is Hong Kong. Even though the ESO servers are located in the USA and there is an Akamai scrubber in Los Angeles, (among other areas) which is where we were previously routed to before Hong Kong came online last September, we will still be directed to Hong Kong.

If you use a VPN out of Texas, as far as the game is concerned you are now located elsewhere and will be directed to the nearest Akamai scrubber, which will be USA based.

The route your data travels using a VPN will depend on the DNS server you are using. Most likely it will travel across the shortest route directly across the Pacific. However that does depend on the wholesaler that your ISP uses for international data traffic.

That's simplified, but more or less what is happening and how a VPN could help.

Where do ya'll think such a server would go? You can fit about 15 usa's in the pacific ocean, japan and aussieland are almost as far from each other as texas, and there arent enough players, youd still have bad ping. That said, I play with plenty of Aussies who perform at a high level, dont blame ur ping. If lag was really that bad you would've quit by now. 5 years in and ppl still complain about lag in cyro on Friday night like it hasnt happwned before.

Most of them just accept they will never be good. And think about how much higher of a endgame level they would be at with less ping.

I have a solution @ZOS_GinaBruno ... you should allow all oceania players to use macros to simulate the 80-100 ping game play and ani cancelling and saving us the extra 10-20 bucks a month for a vpn on top of our eso plus sub. You could limit it to a 4 key macro to be legal in game. This would actually bring us up to par with the animation cancelling which is hit and miss with 300 ping. I mean there are plenty of macros being used already in the game, why not just let your oceania players use them without fear of a ban. This would certainly even out the playing field... of course thats never gonna happen.. just like they wont fix animation canceling so no one can do it or like they wont fix perma cc... oh well, ya gotta have a dream.........

FF14 just announced a datacentre in Australia. Can we have the same in ESO. This announcement is from 2019. Surely the population has increased since the last two expansions?
