What does being a Sorcerer mean to you?

When I first started I was drawn spells that reminded me of previous Elder Scrolls games, and new spells that sounded really fun to use. I like the idea of summoning a set of armor, or summoning a storm atronach to do my bidding. The one spell that made me decide I definitely wanted to play Sorc was Bolt Escape. I really liked the idea of zooming every which way across the battlefield.

Unfortunately, I didn't unlock Bolt Escape until after the cost increase was added. It was still a fun skill to use, but it was never very practical to me, which is disappointing.

I was also disappointed that the storm atronach couldn't move on his own, but I dealt with it because it has the coolest summoning animation, and it's still pretty powerful.

I loved Bound Armor early on in the game; it felt really fun and cool to summon myself a set of daedric armor before battles. I was beyond disappointed when they removed the armor visual for that skill.

Since the Thieves Guild update, I've been running StamSorc. The Crit Surge/Hurricane combo was fantastic, and it still is. Very helpful for soloing non vet and easier vet content, as I normally play alone or with one or two other people.

I still slot the atronach because as I said before, it's really cool. I also slot Bound Armaments, but it doesn't really make me feel Sorcy because it's animation is non existent, and I use it for damage purposes rather than tanking purposes, so the active effect isn't useful to me.

Overall I don't really feel like a Sorcerer anymore. Yes I still turn into storms, but I don't have any of that previous Elder Scrolls mage feel that I initially wanted and had. Most of the spells I used are either useless to me now because I'd rather use a sword than a staff, or the flavor has just been completely drained of them for one reason or another.

I will never stop playing a Sorc though because I refuse to abandon my main character. Now I'm just sitting and hoping for some new Stam based Sorc morphs so I can feel more Sorcy again.
Add a Scribing skill that works like Arcanist beam.
    ---
Veteran players have been alienated and disengaged from Overland since One Tamriel, due to the lack of difficulty, and pushed into dungeons and trials; the minority of content in the Elder Scrolls Online. We can't take the repetition anymore, fix Overland engagement for Vet players. I don't even care if it's not combat related anymore, just make Overland engaging again.
    ---
Overland difficulty scaling is desperately needed. 10 years. 6 paid expansions. 25 DLCs. 41 game changing updates including One Tamriel, an overhaul of the game including a permanent CP160 gear cap and ridiculous power creep thereafter. I'm sick and tired of hearing about Cadwell Silver & Gold as a "you think you do but you don't" - tier deflection to any criticism regarding the lack of overland difficulty in the game. I'm bored of dungeons, I'm bored of trials; make a personal difficulty slider for overland. Make a self debuff mythic. Literally anything at this point.

Means in about 5 weeks you wont see a single magic sorcerer in pvp and a huge portion of magicka players leaving

Magicka is more player-friendly for things like questing and anything involving PvE which is the reason I picked it up. I just transitioned to it in PvP because I was lazy. I didn't want to be bothered to make a build for another toon.

I never really enjoyed it that much, and don't enjoy it much now. If the nerf forces me to play other toons, I am bothered minimally.

Being a magicka sorcerer means excelling at killing squishy bad players as each patch you fall steadily further and further behind meta stamina classes in terms of open world, 1vX, and 1v1 viability. Sometimes this trend reverses a bit such as the Rune Cage buff, but it never ends well. Sometimes a buff for sorc (like Summerset light attack buff) ends up being a neutral or negative change as incoming damage continues to increase but your shields remain the same size. You are forced to stack max magicka; if you don't have at least 40k magicka you aren't mSorcing correctly. And you should have it a good deal higher than 40k. This is the only way to be viable on offense and defense, and don't forget your stamina management.

At the same time you have to be active on the forums to protect your class from stupid nerfs because that PvE group you killed respawned on the forums to demand nerfs. Never mind that they won't be in Cyrodiil for another year and that their combined PvP experience was less than the single sorc who killed them all in their bad builds without impen. But you have to shut down their inane arguements time and again because the pressure to nerf your class is real, and you as a top end player understand that mSorc is already behind meta stamina builds in open world, 1vX, and 1v1 (unless petsorc, lol)

Because if you can't protect your class from these dumb nerfs (and the noobs will always call for sorc nerfs) then the meta stam players will completely erase your reason for playing magicka sorc. Even with stacking all that magicka you still barely scrape by in 1v1's against similarily skilled stamina opponents. A lot of your victories are very closely won, and you have to severely outplay your opponent to win, Summerset Rune Cage meta aside. mNB of equal skill eats you for breakfast. But good things most mNB's suck, amirite?

The main problem is that the extreme lengths you have to go to stack magicka to remain viable make you overkill against noobs, and eventually that catches up with you. You get nerfed to hell in a handbasket and give up the class finally. Your favorite class is ruined and you even played other classes and could handle other skilled magic sorcs, so you're pissed that you got nerfed because other people suck at PvP. Or maybe that's just me.

Edit to add constructive criticism: mSorc certainly can't survive with a cast time on shields. They can't survive and still do good damage if shields can be crit on, but not crit cast, and are affected by physical/spell penetration. You're in light armor ffs. And the third bar is necessary because all of the things you have to do to compete with top end builds require a lot of skills that leave you with little customizable wiggle-room. The third bad is both necessary and fun to have, and now without it I lack the tools to deal with every opponent I come across, unlike other builds on other classes.

Also, to all the people making your dumb@$$ "look I adapted" sorc builds with the nerfs in mind, please just stfu. Most of you never mained sorc and your ideas are laughable. Your "workaround" builds suck and deep down, you know it too, or you're just **** players. Step off and just stop talking about sorc unless it's to protest these stupid changes, any one of which are capable of sinking mSorc as a viable PvP class outside of a zerg.

    **Final Edit to address OP**
The reason I like(d) sorc is because lining up 4-5 abilities to hit at once and take someone from 90% health to 0% is just fun, and the audio and visual effects from doing so are entertaining. It was a fun, mobile (sort of lol) ranged burst class that could turn people to ash and leave them going "wtf I was at 100% health"

@Tasear brilliant question. Sorry for lengthy reply.

For me, Sorc should feel fluid, skills working in harmony together, poetry in motion. Zipping about dealing death but one wrong move and they dead. Glass cannon.

My second toon was a pet sorc healer to 'prove a point' and i love that too, i loved making that work and getting positive, surprised feedback from people. However my FEEL is that should be niche not standard. It's ok that you can make it work, but that's player effort.

Sorc tank feels alien to me, at odds. Again if folks which to do it on a niche setup fine but balancing a class that way is peculiar.

I've said this on discord alot, there is a huge difference between enjoying playing your character and it needing to be OP. Sure often the two can combine, but right now playing sorc feels somewhat clunky to me and its not that effective, and Update 20 is only going to make both worse.

    Examples:
PvE i loved my Sorc prior to Homestead, with 1000 Overload. In vMA it felt perfect, firing death from my fists but one wrong move, one wrong ward or a toe out of line and pop ur dead. That felt like sorc

Again for me in PvP was 2017, as a Magika DW Sorc the harmony of the skills, floating through my rotation building up, and if everything went perfect on sequence death would be at the end of an Empowered Frag. Almost quite ninja, flowing through the moves with a death strike at the end - but if interupted flow was lost and i had to reset. Better players would still Pwn me, but id have the measure of players less skilled and it felt right. I wasn't 'lucking out' i was commited to dealing damage, could just about sustain, and just about survive

Old Frag felt like everything right that clunky Rune Cage feels wrong.i just want things to feel right again.

Lastly i feel wrong in all current choices, i feel hybrid. With shackle / amber / engine guardian all popular and us running high stamina & regen that's weird. Sorcs should be extreme, all in magika. Committed - is my 'feel'

I'm also confused about all this buffing to light attacks etc. Weaving / Ani canceling are harder skills for noobs to learn if their drive is for newer players.

I know things are feel rough for many players who feel very tied to Sorc, but I ask a question for people to better express their ideal Sorc not in skills, but in feelings. How do you imagine the Sorc Functioning in the game? What makes you love the class? Is the animations? The pacing of the skills? Making things go boom? The complexity or the simplity? Having minions with you all the time?

My sorc taught me the game. I never played any MMOs before ESO, and when I first started it, with a DK character, I was having an extremely hard time. I didn’t understand attributes, weapons, combat, and since areas were scaled back then, I couldn’t progress after level 18, so I gave up altogether. A few months later, I picked it up again and made a new character, a sorc, and I was finally having fun in the game. I made so many blunders while learning, hilarious and mortifying anecdotes of epic fails, but I was having fun. She became my main character, and we went on a lot of adventures together. She is the Vestige who defeated Molag Bal, helped all three factions, explored Craglorn, saved living Gods from dire predicaments, thwarted Daedric Princes time and time again, built beautiful houses, and fished all the fish. She was my first character to beat vMA and become a Flawless Conqueror. She taught me how to do it with more characters. She solo’d dungeons when my alts need gear and I couldn’t find a group, or just for fun  The animation and battle roar of Boundless Storm, a proc’ed crystal fragment landing, her arms full of lightning in Overload mode are still some of the most satisfying and cool-looking things in the game for me. So was the purple aura of Bound Aegis… There is a broken bridge in Archon’s Grove; my sorc climbs a nearby rock and streaks to the other side, when on her rose-picking missions. And that’s just one little example of the many awesome things she can do. I do have a lot of alt characters, almost in every spec, and since the advent of pet builds, I found it preferable to DPS on my magNB because for me the rotation is more fluid and the damage is higher. But even if I’m pulling lower numbers on my sorc and I have to heavy attack all the time, I still feel more confident when I’m playing with her. Mysterious lands, new monsters, a host of villains creating chaos, but I’m never scared with my sorc. She is my heart in ESO, and I cannot imagine playing the game without her  And yes, things going BOOM is pretty fun too

Being magicka sorc became cheese for me due to how some of these behaved in PvP, to the point I stopped PvPing as one.
I hope new changes will result in class rewarding skilled play over being a jumping zergling execute spammer. I exclude good 1-2vX players from this generalization.

Being stamina sorc always was rewarding in PvP. Sheer aggression class provides, passive execute, bonus to physical damage output and great self healing trough combat made stamsorc #1 brawler in my book. I do not main the class but I always liked it and I feel powerful when playing one, no matter if I go as an orc or khajiit.

What I hope for in the future with both magicka and stamina sorc.

I would like to see more interesting ways to play both of them, outside what we have atm. I am not expecting 1 second cast time on shields to ruin the class, yet I am excited to see rebalance of the magicka sorc skills and how very good sorcs will adapt to new rules. From stamsorc I expect new overload morph to have synergy with class, maybe boosting physical damage some more, making it true weapon master of ESO.

Being a magician and casting a lot of interesting and useful magic spells.
Being able to stand off at range and do so.

Shields are just examples -- important ones -- of such spells.
    Pets are just a tool.

Losing the knockdown from Crystal Frags made sorcerer less fun; indeed, I started focusing on builds without a good single-target damage arsenal.
Cast times are terrible, since I'm helpless to do anything else until the cast time resolves.

I also occasionally enjoy PBAoE playstyles. With sorcerer (or at all in this game) that last happened for me back when Critical Surge was totally overpowered. A nice bonus was that Boundless Storm is a lot of fun, but doesn't fit well with the ranged builds I usually play, nor indeed easily find room on my skill bars even when I expect some melee aggro, e.g. in vMA.

Lightning theme! (I have a PhD in electrical engineering)

    1. Unique mobility (Streak spam, Lightning Form).
    2. Damage mitigation via wards (I like the idea of avoiding hp damage entirely).
    3. Interesting and broad selection of skills supporting out-of-the-box thinking and outplaying enemies (LOS Streak, Mines, Frag combos, Dark Deal) rather than just spamming 10 damage abilities or 10 forms of healing.
    4. Crystal Frags felt soooo good and powerful and rewarding.
    5. Access to utility skills in case I'd like to try something different (Encase, Rune Cage, Negate, Dark Deal).

Ironically, all of these points are not valid anymore.
    1. Everybody is superfast with swift jewelery, major expedition, and gap closers.
    2. Shield stacking is a boring one trick pony, and about to get nerfed anyway.
    3. No bar space for magsorc. No skills at all for stam.
    4. Frags are currently a wasted bar slot.
    5. Mostly useless. Either you run a setup like 100% other sorcs or GTFO.

When I picked up this came a couple years ago, I immediately gravitated to sorcerer because it was the obvious choice to create a character I’ve played in many, many RPGs. No other class has a dedicated skill line for lightning magic. I virtually ignored the other two skill lines in the class for a long time, because learning any of that would have been out of character. Then he got the title ‘master wizard’ and begrudgingly studied (to him) lesser forms of magic. He still refuses to study restoration, though, and also refuses to do much of anything with daedra.

Because I focus on character concept, patch cycle changes impact me little, if at all. My characters are not the number calculations of the server, whether it is cast times, crit ratings, sustain, or whatever. They are individuals with a personality and a history. Zenimax can never take that away from me - they would never make changes so dramatic (like removing the entire storm calling skill line) as to ruin my characters. In the improbable event that they did, it’s not like I lack a ton of other character ideas to run with.

All that said, I was wandering around Wrothgar with my lightning mage yesterday. Someone put out a call for world boss help, and I went to assist. By the end of the fight, I had the thought ‘hmm... I’m not sure this would have worked for me at all if his shield had a cast time.’ I like that he can swoop in and help a new player... serve as a tank even for the more difficult world bosses. I think I could still do that with him after the change, but I would need to run TWO tanky sets for him instead of one, maybe? Nah. That’s not who he is.

Being a sorc to me means enjoying my fave mode of play: Solo PvE.

My magsorc carries her own tank (clannfear), her own healer (matriarch), her own lightning storms to do moderate damage, and her own shielding to protect her whole little team. Her dps is adequate but, more importantly, her sustain and survivability are good. She will sometimes run clannfear+matriarch when solo or perhaps clannfear+Inner Light. When she does join others, she drops the clannfear and runs matriarch+Inner Light.

My bowbow stamsorc much prefers solo PvE as well because she loves a very slow and deliberate approach. She can deliver a very nice opening burst, then hold her foe in her killing zone (hail & caltrops) using surge and hurricane. Her dps is adequate, her survivability is solid but her sustain is poor.

I came from wow where I played a mage. When I created my sorcerer I played the same way..as a powerful ranged damage dealer who is a dead meat if the mob gets into melee range.

I was oblivious to shields and what they could do so leveled all the way up with no shields.
"get out of the red"..I roll dodged only because I had already leveled up 3 other classes all stamina.

So this shield change won't affect me because I never used it.

I'm not min/max, BIS nor plan to do any hardcore end game progression. I do pvp but I go in there just to have fun. Sure I die a lot but I die a lot on all my toons which is to be expected until I get the right pvp gear and figure out pvp play strategy.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry :o You win lol. Hey, maybe they could introduce Sorcs as Buffbots of old, like in DAoC that used to have hoards of Buffbots sitting there in the PVP Border Keeps providing Buffs from miles away to the persons actual PVP toon.

Seriously I've thought of converting to a Tank but that's just an exercise in frustration.

I rolled a magsorc, because I play mages since 25+ years and never have enough of it.

This next update might be what makes me "have enough of it".
