In interface settings there is an option to set minimum transparancy of the chatwindow. However, this wont effect chat text from fading away.... so what the frog is the frogging point of having a minimum transparany for the chatwindow when there is no frogging text shown???

So you can adjust the ease of seeing said chat while it's active, what's behind it, or anywhere in between based on your hearts desires.

Unless you've changed the color of your text, the generic white acts as transparency by default unless you happen to be in a dark place.

The transparency only sets the background, nothing else. This gives players the choice not to block so much of the game depending on their text size, yet still see chats when they show up.

If you want transparency to chat text, disable it.

Please tell me how it makes sense to have the chatbox always visible if it's empty? (because the text faded away).

This is why I adore mods. I have lots of them and at least two of them offer an option to keep the text from fading. If I don't see a comment when it's made, it's still there at a glance a few minutes later.

You must have a different issue. The chat box automatically closes after a few moments. Are you sure you're not opening it by mistake?

That's exactly what I have done and lo and behold, the chatbox does not fade away. But the text does. Waht's the point of an empty chatbox with no text??

Are you saying there is an option to have the text stay permanently and not fade away?

chatbox does not stay if you set the slider to anything but full transparency, but the text does.

hrmm. I was playing around with that slider the other day and I want to say when I turned it all the way to the left (or right, whichever way reduces transparency), that everything stayed up permanently including the text. I don't remember anything disappearing and i actually later changed it back to the way I had it before because I preferred that disappearing.

I will have to check more into it becuz I think that thing disappearing

well, I do want to see some messages from the game and some addons, like loot messages etc. Also some some chat can be worthwile, someone selling something I need or at low price; same with guild chat. I don't necessarily have time to read it when it's there and it's a nuisance to have to hover over it to see it. I just want it to be there when I look.
