What is the purpose of houses?

For me, the purpose of housing is just that it is really fun and enjoyable. I like the option after questing or pvp to be able to go to my house and be creative. It is also a nice way to display achievements you have earned, and there are of course the benefits of crafting stations/storage chests/target dummies etc.

I have still kept my first fully decorated house exactly the way it was when I finished it (Black Vine Villa) despite everything in it being really outdated now, and I shall probably never change it because it is like my own little piece of eso nostalgia

the only crown only items in that picture are the mundus stones. everything else can be bought with gold in game.

there are 13 mundus stones, each one is 4k crowns, which makes it 52000 crowns. now, assuming those crowns were bought at regular and not a sale price and assuming that that was before larger crown packs became available (although to be honest, the difference in price per crown is nominal, when not on sale) - they bought 5500 crown packs at $40 each, so 10 packs. aka $400. still a lot of money, but nowhere near thousands of dollars.

and i deliberately went with most expensive case scenario of buying crowns rather then using some of the subscription ones, and buying them for regular price, if they used some of the subscription crowns, IF they bought the rest on sale, its less. and that they did it pre crown gifting so they spend all of their own money rather then someone else's. in any case. expensive and time consuming? yes. thousands of dollars? no

P.S. aside from extra storage more convenient set crafting and target dummies, houses are fun and make for a lot more role playing opportunities where you can prevent random interruptions from trolls or just passerbys by simply closing down the house to anyone but those in your role playing group.

Also don't forget you can buy gifted items now too with in game gold, usually around 200k per 1k Crowns

Well parties are not really an option, giving the limited number of people that can be at the same time in the house.

Khajiit she begs to differ sir!

Although the temple is a very large property yes. It is still possible to have small boozy gatherings in even the smallest of dwellings, though you may get an elbow in your face and a foot in your ale yes.

    Sure, two's company, three's a crowd.
But honestly, when you think about a party, you about something a bit bigger than that.

I suspect that Santie keeps the number of guests pretty low. Each guest has two hands that are in need of watching. That can add up pretty quick.

Having houses in multiple zones helps when starting a new character.....especially skyshard farming.

Having crafting stations that aren't crowded is probably the best thing about them though!!!!

It's kind of fun to mess around with furniture and designs too.

...do they serve a real purpose?
    LET ME COUNT THE WAYS.
There seem's to be a few different ways to actually play ESO.
Obviously, people consider PvP The main reason to Play an MMORPG, they are still young enough their fingers haven't been damaged by all the button spamming. Hey I have destroyed many an adolescent "ADULT" strut in My day too. So we will list PvP #1. Housing you can put some Training Dummies and build all those paper builds in secret.
RP #2. I am gonna put Role-Play second, and maybe I'm wrong... but even if It's just to show off your Artwork, That's RP. They also have a pretty decent size community. Need a Dungeon if You gonna Train That Noob right!
Money Maker #3 Which in my opinion is really The only reason to own a HOME. Some of the Top Decorators in Game make decent Gold just moving Your Furniture around, when you don't have the time and want to go PVP right away. There are some though Im gonna throw out shameless plug here cuz You really need to go ee dome They House's. Ninjamonkey0169, JHARTELLIS, WUEBEN. Those guys on TWITCH, have YOUTUBE Channels, and honestly, They are ARTIST!
Joining a Housing Guild was the first opportunity for me to Meet The nice people in the game that didn't challenge Me to a Duel right away. Housing is the place where "YOU" can say "THIS IS ME and No else House Looks exactly like Mine!" Unlike Outfit and Armour right?
#4 My Favorite point. What World Travel, Military person's Home isn't filled with all those little mementoes and souvenirs from all the places they were. Its a Physical and Visual Reminder to Yourself how far and How you have seen and done ina really Huge Game. Think that next time you go your Uncles house and see all the crazy stuff He sent home while in The Military or as Merchant. I Like those Homes that are all traditional in-game sure. But every one of Us is a World Traveler and Putting out Our Tropheys for display is the best way to show others whats still out there.
#5 There's NO RENT! ESO won't throw you out if you miss a payment. So throw down your furs rugs, your wooden stools if that's all you got for now, and light a candle and think to yourself Boy/Girl "What I would do to this place If I had More Money!" :)

To have and decorate is a real purpose, and enough for me. I always wanted to have one of the Great Houses property in Morrowind, an ancient orcish stronghold and a simple mud hut for my Argonian.

I didn't :) in my "most expensive case scenario" i mentioned doing this pre crown gifting rather then after, and I did mention that with crown gifting someone else's crowns could have been spent.

P.S. I have found cheaper crown to gold conversion that that :D ok, fine, guildie found it and shared, but still counts :P

    End game money sink..

To be honest housing in ESO feels very tacked on an kinda pointless, Rift did housing so much better and Guildwars had awesome guild halls

Yep. I had my daughter go back and screenshot the houses I built/decorated for my two main girls in RIFT. One I actually built from bits n pieces (Veilsong's house in Moonshade Pools), the other I decorated - that was Westerly's place, at Three Springs. They were on opposite sides of the "war" (Veil was Guardian, West Defiant), but when they retired they got together to rag on the two sides who couldn't seem to figure out how to live together. Anyway, they were one of my favorite pairs of people to write RP stories about.

RIFT's housing setup was superb. A very superlative experience....
