the only crown only items in that picture are the mundus stones. everything else can be bought with gold in game.
there are 13 mundus stones, each one is 4k crowns, which makes it 52000 crowns. now, assuming those crowns were bought at regular and not a sale price and assuming that that was before larger crown packs became available (although to be honest, the difference in price per crown is nominal, when not on sale) - they bought 5500 crown packs at $40 each, so 10 packs. aka $400. still a lot of money, but nowhere near thousands of dollars.
and i deliberately went with most expensive case scenario of buying crowns rather then using some of the subscription ones, and buying them for regular price, if they used some of the subscription crowns, IF they bought the rest on sale, its less. and that they did it pre crown gifting so they spend all of their own money rather then someone else's. in any case. expensive and time consuming? yes. thousands of dollars? no
P.S. aside from extra storage more convenient set crafting and target dummies, houses are fun and make for a lot more role playing opportunities where you can prevent random interruptions from trolls or just passerbys by simply closing down the house to anyone but those in your role playing group.

Khajiit she begs to differ sir!
Although the temple is a very large property yes. It is still possible to have small boozy gatherings in even the smallest of dwellings, though you may get an elbow in your face and a foot in your ale yes.

But honestly, when you think about a party, you about something a bit bigger than that.
Are they just something to have and decorate or do they serve a real purpose?

To be honest housing in ESO feels very tacked on an kinda pointless, Rift did housing so much better and Guildwars had awesome guild halls
