PVP advice please - Mayhem event.

I have never PVPed. I have only been to Cyrodiil for the crafting stations and have only fought another player once when I was attacked.
Looking at the details for the Mayhem event, it would appear that there is some solo content, spying quests etc.
1) Is it worth giving it a go or will I just get ganked?
2) What character do you advise using? Stealther, speedster,DPS Mage or Tank with heals for survivability?
I am 800ish CPs and have/can make CP160 gold cafted kit
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks

Hello! Cyrodiil can be daunting at first

    1) Is it worth giving it a go or will I just get ganked?
    A) Yes you will get ganked, we all do even the super elite guys!

    2) What character do you advise using? Stealther, speedster,DPS Mage or Tank with heals for survivability?
    A) Whatever you are comfortable playing really, maybe watch some youtube builds from guys like Alcast, blobsky, jdmoonan etc

I would advise going to one the new campaigns they setup for the event, get yourself a nice build and type "LFG" until you find a group, use siege weapons on keeps and meatbags against players, repair kits on keeps and res dead team mates. Dont worry too much about having a perfect setup either, just go in and enjoy the madness

Edit: Also keep an eye on the map and what people are saying in chat, you will get nice ticks of Alliance points for helping defend a keep or take one, feel free to ask for help in the chat too, you will of course getting the salt/ edge lords trolling but most people are decent and will help in PVP.

If you're in it for the ap just follow a zerg. There's safety in numbers and you get nice offensive and defensive ticks.

I never took part in last year Mayhem Event because I was apprehensive about going into Cyrodiil as a noob but when I did eventually *dip my toe in* to get the skyshards I discovered once you get passed the *I am going to get killed a lot* initial stage it really is great fun, so I would encourage everyone who has never taken part in pvp to have a go.

If it`s your first time in Cyrodiil get your toon a set of impenetrable gear, doesnt need to be anything fancy but it will help with your survivability

Make sure your mount has at least good speed, stamina helps too as it is harder to get knocked off.
The distances across the map can be daunting if your mount is at snail speed and you cant use the transitus shrines.

It`s better to do things as a group so yes when you arrive in the zone type LFG into zone chat and run with the zerg.

Make sure you have plenty pots/soul gems on you as there are not the usual merchants, banks in Cyrodiil so you will need to travel back to the main gates for supplies or buy from siege merchants in areas controlled by your alliance.

As for what class to take in with you I would go with the one you feel most comfortable playing and yes there are plenty of videos on you tube etc to give you info on skills, builds etc

Look forward to seeing you all in Cyrodiil!!!

Id also advise to look up some videos for the class you want to play. If you dont find any, shacklebreaker is a set that is decent for any class. Just make sure your armor is impen.
And also, stay within the horde. If you dont as a beginner, you will be found and cut down.

800+ CP and you've never been in Cyro? Even for caltrops? Damn...

Anyway, you'll be ganked/bombed no matter what character you bring and what gear you will equip. :)

If you want to do solo quests (in a big way) and avoid fighting other players you could consider making a build just for that.

Put on 2 of the following sets:
    Jailbreaker (from Banished Cells)
    Night's Silence (craftable)
    Night Mother's Embrace (Guild Stores/Deshaan)
    Shadow Walker (Guild Stores/Cyrodiil)
    Night Terror (Guild Stores/Stormhaven)
    Darkstride (Guild Stores/Rivenspire)

...and any monster set and use potions with Major Expedition (until you unlock Rapid M.). Get the Windrunning and War Mount passives and use the Steed Mundus Stone. Also put a lot of Points in Shade and all the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood passives - regardless of class.

If you are looking for solo content, here's what's available.

There is a number of PVE quests in Cyrodiil, clustered around 5 towns. Now, these, quests are short, simple, and have a small AP reward. During Midyear Mayhem, they will also give a festival reward.

These quests are short and simple because of the threat of PVP. Please prepare for PVP

Cropsford, Vlastarus, and Bruma all have the town symbol on the map. They also have PVP flags, 3 flags that claim the town for a certain alliance. 2 of those flags have guards that will attack your or defend you based on your alliance. You might have to capture the town (stand on the flags until it turns your color) to turn in some of your quests. These towns are PVP objectives. Expect to see enemy players.

Cheydinhal and Chorrol are the other two towns on the map that have quest hubs. They do not have flags, so you don't have to worry about Alliance guards and flags. They also aren't PVP objectives. However, there will still be plenty of players about wanting to quest, fight, or hunt questers. So prepare for PVP.

Now, for a more PVP oriented set of quests, the home gate has a series of PVP missions: Capture Enemy Keep, Capture Enemy Resource, Kill Enemy Player Types, and Scouting Missions. There's also the Conquest missions, which are a longer version of the above, plus a Capture All 3 Towns quest.

This quests can often be completed as you doing whatever you want to. As you quest, you will probably kill an enemy player or two. You might help out with capturing a keep or resource. I usually ignore the "Capture" quests if the objective they want me to take is far away from my alliance's usual targets. So I pick these quests up even if I'm not going to make an all out effort to complete them.

If you want to mainly PVE, and you have a fast horse, you might be interested in the scouting missions. These send you to an enemy objective, you scribble a report, and return to home base. Lots of riding, but it can be completed mostly from stealth.

If you want to be a little more adventurous, its possible though difficult to solo capture a resource. There's always the risk of an enemy player showing up to defend, but I taught myself to solo resources so I would never be bored in PVP and would always have something to contribute.

    Basic Prep for PVP
    • Wear PVP gear. That's Impenetrable trait gear so you don't blow up when someone crits you. Generally speaking you want closer to 25k health + the 5k health you'll get from Battlespirit, and 2-3k crit resistance.
    • Have your potions and food buffs ready to go. There aren't many trading guilds that claim keeps.
    • If you can, have a high speed and stamina mount. If not, equip the Rapid Manuevers skill from the Assault skill line.
    • Be prepared to be attacked. There's no universally accepted signal for "I'm just here for the questing", and as a former PVE-only player myself, Im a firm believer that Cyrodiil is a PVP zone and everyone should expect PVP in a PVP zone. A good basic counter when being ganked is to block as soon as you realize what's going on, break free, and roll dodge out of the initial attack. Often if you can survive the first hit, the attack turns into a 1v1 duel where at least you've got a fighting chance.
    Hope that helps!

    Things to Know:

-Use Transitus Shrines to travel to controlled friendly castle
    - a Keep/Castle/Fort “flags” when a wall/door is damaged to below 50% it’s health.
    - Once flagged you are no longer able to “transit” or ressurect at the castle...res at a nearby castle or a Forward Camp(player item that can be purchased and used to allow resurrection)
    - Siege Repair kits can be purchased and used to extend the life of Siege and Forward Camps! Save a FwdCamp...your Res may depend on it!
    - When all 3 resources around a castle are captured Transit is cut off to that castle (referred to as RL-Resource Locked)
    - There are Wayshrines at the back of your Alliances 2 Homebases that allow you to leave Cyrodiil

Get Shacklebreaker (6trait crafted). Go Infused big/Inpen small. Heavy for Stam (or medium if you think you'll be ok?), light for mag.

Monster set I use TK on Stam, 1pc Domi 1pc Ilambris on mag.

Other sets: Bone Pirate / Lich for regen
    Spriggans / Spinner for pen

Practice PvP a little in a zerg, get a feel for what it's like (LFG in zone). Look at vids/guides/builds on YT or sites such as Alcasthq.com

EDIT: To actually answer your questions:
    1) It's definitely worth giving it a go and yes there's a 99% chance you'll get ganked... everyone does.
    2) I'd personally recommend a Heavy Stam build, a Magblade or a Magsorc. Don't worry about speccing full dmg, you want survivability when you're starting.

Depends on your class entirely imo.

If you want lots of alliance points, I think the most easiest is to be a healer.

Tanks are the least advisable imo as they get the least alliance points and just kinda stand there and block

Dps is ofc the most common (and fun i guess) s

Last year's tips (the siege sutff has changed):
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/360956/joy-s-advice-for-midyear-mayhem-event/p1

You will get ganked. You will get zerged. You will die a lot. It's no big deal.

Don't gear as a tank; solo tanks in pvp are of very limited usefulness. Otherwise, choose the class you understand the best and you'll have the most success.

    Prepare for the event:
    • Buy lots of tissues and maybe some beer
    • Prepare the phone number of your mum
    • Enter Cyrodiil and type /z lfg event
    • Call your mum while crying over getting ganked/stomped/bombed
    • Use your beer (a lot)
    • Kill your first few enemies and stop sobbing
    • Enrage while murdering that cheating scum that thought you were an mummy's boy (ignore your mum calling back because you rudely quited her call) and t-bag everyone
    • Join a PvP guild and make fun of the carebears
    • Wear your Legates black with pride

Too much information can be daunting. So to keep it simple..

    Play any class you want.

Wear Full Impenetrable, then when you have adjusted to pvp, replace a few with whatever you want. 2.5k - 3k a good crit resist to aim for, you will lower it when you get more comfortable.

Stay in a group, if not follow a group of players when going to keeps. For example if in EP they take blue road keep, most times they will go to Sejanus next, follow the zerg.

When entering Cyrodiil for the first time, head to the wayshrine and check your map, if a keep is being taken or fighting is happening wait to it glows green and transport there or transport to a keep next to one that can be taken and you can follow the above advice.

Don't go between keeps alone at the start. Too Many nasty gankers about.

As others have said look up some build ideas. Not only will it help with gear concepts for you, but also skills. Different skills and often morphs can perform better in PvP than they do in PvE.

All your crowd control abilities such as roots, snares, knockbacks, and slows can be great ways for you to impede a charging, or running, enemy.

Have some class or weapon defensive abilities and buffs, and make sure to keep them up whenever in combat.

Go with an offensive and a defensive ultimate.

Finally for your offensive skills, in general because of the size and scope you can leave off persasant ground AoE, siege will cover that, and go for direct target attacks.

Edit: Also don't be afraid to try different things out on your bars and find out what works for you. Just because it works for others doesn't mean it will be your build. PvE is like a formal dance with set steps and patterns. PvP is like freestyle and breakdancing becoming more more reactive to the changing landscape of battle. Find your own flavor out there.

Honestly, your best bet is to make heavy armour magica Templar and lfg. Full impen.

Shackle breaker or kagernacs in heavy. Monster set of choice. Then a light armor 5 piece like transmutation, lich, sanctuary, wizards riposte, spinners, war maiden.

Probably your easiest option for staying alive and waiting for numbers if you're worried about being dead all the time.

I suggest creating a new character and play in Kyne

    Kyne
    - New player friendly
    - No or very little Lag
    - No sitting in Que's just to play
    - Fairly even sides ( AD/EP may need a few more players for the Event )
    - Easy to find a group
    - Doesn't depend on Guilds
    - You have plenty of time to respond to UA's, No keep is gone in 30 sec
    - No "one hit" wonders, you have a chance to fight back
    - Great fights
    - lots of AP
    - IC is empty if that is your thing

Kyne is a great place to be during the event. I've been playing PvP for 3+ years and Kyne is the best campaign. Vivec is fun too but it is very dependent on guilds to make pushes, very few players will show up to defend keeps, and there could be heavy lag, load screens, and disconnects. If they add more campaigns for the event there is going to be a good chance those campaigns will be unbalanced and 1 faction controlling the map.

I highly recommend Kyne. If you decide to come, don't wear light armor because sload will eat right through it.

    - Siege Repair kits can be purchased and used to extend the life of Siege and Forward Camps! Save a FwdCamp...your Res may depend on it!
What 13 mentioned here is pretty important. If you're new to PvP and want to just help out and not fight other players. This task is the right one for you. You can pile up a bunch of repair kits and pretend you're a mechanic and run around repairing the fortress.

Veteran players really appreciate this a lot. They can focus on fighting and holding the map, and the people who want to play mechanics can repair the keeps as they upgrade or repair another players siege.

    One example of how important this is;

This past weekend a guy I know got onto a Scattershot siege to use it to put AoE on a open hole EP made into Sejanus. While he was busy operating the siege, he had EP players come and strike his character. I ran up to them and used my quick StamNB Incap combos to burn them off him so he can focus on keeping the rest of the EP out. As the fight went on, his siege starting losing health, and if it did not get repaired we were going to lose Sejanus. I had some siege repair and repaired it while he focused on keeping EP out. We ended up winning that battle through team work. He kept EP at bay enough so we could push back, and I watched his back and focused anyone trying to kill him on siege.

    At first
pvp requires a lot of practice if you never was there (except for crafting) it wont be easy.

    1) Yes you will get ganked a lot, but thats not only the fault of the event.
Gankers are always in cyro sometimes more sometimes less, just try to stay in a group if you dont have pvp practice, then the chance that someone will gank you is a bit less.

    2) i use a magsorc, stam dk, stamblade and a magblade active but you need to decide for yourself what you like better.
tbh i wouldnt try a stam dk with no pvp experience. it needs a lot of practice.
you could use a magsorc or nighblades they need a lot of practice aswell, but i guess its in the beginning easier than a stamdk^^

Stick with zergs and learn to zerg surf, and you'll have fun. Don't try to solo or run in a small group.

Despite what some people will tell you, it can be hard for a PvP meta player to deal with the high level of dps a PvE'r can output in situations where it is difficult to shut the PvE'r down (difficult to get to you). However, if you are not buried in a zerg, you will typically have lost before a fight begins. Unless you run into another PvE player.

Many many thanks for all the great tips here folks.
I re-rolled attributes and armour (30k+ Health 2.5k+ crit resist) and took my sneaky lil nightblade into Cyrodiil.
I wanted to try and get some of the holiday achievements so headed to Aer which was under attack.
I sprinted in and was just at the postern gate when bing, I got the achievement for taking a keep without seeing another player friend or foe!!!
I did a lot of the little repeatable quests and she is now up to Lvl 5 PVP and I joined in a mass scrap last night and got my first player kill somewhere in the mayhem!
Yep I've died a lot, but I've had a lot of fun. Will be rolling a new PVP specific char to level up for next years event.

Stick with a group and work with them, however, solo really isnt horrible, and you can run with people without being in their group. Get used to stealthing before you arrive at a destination until you're comfortable with dealing with anyone there, or waiting for them to leave. Repairing keeps gets you AP, and if you stumble upon an enemy Forward Camp(a spawn point for getting the dead closer to the target so they can resume attack or defense) try to burn them down even if it's suicide, or let zone chat know where they are and someone will help. Choose whatever class you like, and be prepared to adapt and use skills that you may not have used before, but provide great utility. Above all, have fun and make friends.

Sadly, this is good advice (though I would disagree that it's particularly fun).

Cyrodil is all about the zerg and numbers. You are going to have a miserable and soul- wrenching experience if you attempt to PvP in there on your own. This game just doesn't have enough "Oh shi__!" moves or ways to escape to make that kind of play enjoyable.

I would recommend battlegrounds if you want to PvP on this game. It's a lot more tolerable as you can actually have a decent back and forth with other players.
