Please help OP on this matter.

    @carothis

I suggest that you should post it here https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/categories/customer-support-general
With your ticket number. The response there as you can check is faster, as with my other case

And why not ? You are the one that chose to use the special character in their name.

Apparently your new to the gaming industry, But traditionally if something causes an issue in any way within your game . You block that issue and or resolve it, Neither of these have been done. There was not even a warning that adding said character could resolve in a negetive effect. Hense this is on the game itself NOT the person buying it.

Its like telling someone you can go into a field and explore for the day, But not telling them that if they bring a snack that fireants will be all over them since the fields infested with them. SEE with said warning, they wouldnt bring a snack even if they are there all day

Actually no. That naming convention was and is still common in WOW. And players who chose to use special characters in their name had the same complaints because the majority of players could not type the letter.

Cheaters, exploiters and some bot characters use them because then it's hard for them to get reported as players can't type their actual name.

Don't try arguing with ESO fans. Their solution to server issues with the Steam version is to purchase the game from ZOS. Therefore it's not a surprise that in your case it's normal for them to spend money on a name change instead of having the developer fix the issue.

Then if you have so much gaming experience you should know that special characters in names presents a whole new set of issues in game with regards to communication.

Statistically, everyone's played WoW, simultaneously, on 16.3 accounts, or some such. But, yeah, non-standard unicode characters wrecking havoc on chat systems in MMOs? That's not new. I wouldn't go so far as to say "it's information you should know going in," because everyone has to start somewhere, but this is one of those things where it's really not surprising, unless you're new to MMOs.

Probably the only way to do that. But it shouldn't be a solution as it sends the wrong signal to the developer. Same here. I didn't know that special characters can cause such issues and I would expect some sort of warning in the game rather than the need for doing research before naming your toon.

That's a sad option. It's like they sold the rights or a copy of their own game to someone without any access to it - as they also "advised" me in a ticket to get the game again. I was like "why would I do that? I got your product, which most of the times malfunctioned, it's not up to me to fix it or pay extra, I already did that, just look at my purchase history". you know what they had the audacity to tell me? "we don't recall any purchases"........ at that point I got infuriated.

It's a well known problem that characters with "special characters" are unable to be referred to by name.

Your only options are to either stay on top of Support and badger them to change your character name for you, or break down and buy a name change token yourself.

Personally im fine with badgering them till they fix this as its not a "Known" issue if they give you no prompt or warning informing you of said issue before hand. And I refuse to spend anymore moeny on a game if they dont even support it properly

"Known" means its identified. ZOS knows about it, and most people who've been playing this game for a while know. ZOS can't fix it. All they can do is change your name for you, but you'll have to stay on top of the ticket.

Btw, don't respond more than once each time you get a response. Every time you respond you send your ticket to the back of the queue.

Jeez ZOS just give the guy a name change token, it's not that hard. I mean so much frustration on both ends can be avoided if they would just read your ticket and go "ah, no worries go ahead and change your name"

Isn't there a way to whisper people who have special characters by adding a , at the end? Like /w Carothis S, ?

Has anyone who has a keyboard that can properly type your special character tried to invite you to a group or whisper you? Did that work?

There really is no excuse for the name parser to allow something that will not work in game. It is boiler plate code to parse and pop up an error message listing the character rules. Allowing a new player to make the mistake only to find out later after investing time in the game that their name will not work for normal game communications is wrong no matter how you slice it.

As someone who works in the game development field, I wanted to clarify what you said here.

Yes, when an issue is identified, a report is written and logged. But then, the bug is assigned a priority. An issue like the one described in the OP is typically given a low priority and may even be marked as "Will Not Resolve" if the issue is considered more trouble than it's worth (or if it is reclassified as a feature, rather than a bug  )

Also, I disagree with your second point that they should've warned you. Do toilet seat manufacturers have to tell you that pissing on the seat will result in a mess on your bathroom floor? No. You should probably just know that.

Enlighten me then mr sensible, How am I to know thats not an okay name or way to name my character IF Im one, Allowed to do it, And two not warned it would have a negetive impact? The answer is I wouldnt know. Infact most games if your using names that wont work either dont allow you OR would at least warn you. So...Your just wrong, Dont make excuses for them being lazy.

Oh, support is not going to see this thread. They go through the tickets. They might spend some time on the boards, but not in an official capacity. The developers see the boards, but this quirk is pretty widely known, so I'd be surprised if they were unaware.

You wanted a special character to make your character special and unique: Congrats, you got that. Now the sensor at the supermarket's automatic door no longer detects you.

I'm willing to bet it has a lot to do with the contractual relationship between Valve and Zenimax Media. Valve's gotten very possessive of microtransactions on their platform since... I want to say EA, was pulling an end run around them. At this point, if you have a Steam based ESO account, it's tied to Steam without specifically going to Customer Support and jumping through hoops.

This was pretty clearly a failure on Valve's end. At that point, everyone asking ZOS to light them up or cut ties, just wasn't looking at the business realities of closing the door on the money from sales on Steam. I mean, right now, it has the 21st highest player count on Steam (going by SteamCharts.) Put another way, more people are playing ESO via Steam than either version of Skyrim (though, not both combined), it's also the second highest placing MMO on the list (behind the F2P Warframe.)

Steam has some really aggressive policies when it comes to account management now days, but it's still worth it for most developers because abandoning the platform is leaving a lot of money on the table.

That's because you used the special character that more than 80% of the player base cannot type.
The fact that they can whisper you by your ID means it's not broke.

Depends. If you can't see their @name, for example recruiting from zone....

So far as that goes, there's also the issue with players who have non-standard characters in their @ name. As I mentioned, I've got a guildie with a scharfes in their @name. I mean, if you're German, no issue, but my keyboard doesn't have a "ß."
