Eh. It seems quite possible to pay $20 for the base game, and then happily play for quite a long time without spending anything else.

And then either ESO+ to play the DLC, or get them with a few crowns.

Is there a bunch of stuff in the cash shop? Sure.
Is some of it (huge houses, particularly-ugly mounts) a bit expensive? Sure.
Is any of it needed to play? No.
The free crown crates we've gotten haven't given me any reason to want to actually spend $ on them.

(Full disclosure, my purchase history: I bought the game last year. Couple months of ESO+ at the start. Bought one 3k crown pack on sale - last fall? With those crowns, I've bought a cheap horse, the TG & DB dlcs on sale for 500 each, and a few 500/700cr costumes. I've still got ~3k crowns left. Oh, and I pre-ordered Summerset to get it & Morrowind. Oh, yeah. I got the 3k crown pack so I'd have enough crowns to buy some crates when the Dark Shaman costume returned as a 40-gem retread.... but then they gave me that costume for free during an event.)

Grind? Grind doesn't make a game an "Asian f2p MMO", either. Grind has existed in MMOs forever - it's how they kept you paying a sub when there wasn't any more actual "content" to play. Vanilla WoW was full of grind.

I've played a number of f2p Asian MMOs. They take the grind to a whole 'nother level. (Heck, I tried returning to TERA recently, when I saw there was a "big expansion!" coming out.... only to discover that, in the 2 years I'd been away, there was maybe another couple hours of "story"/questing content, along with multiple new layers of grind. And to even do the new expansion - which is, again, just a handful of quests - I'd have to grind a bunch. Played a few hours total, took a couple new screenshots of my bikini collection, and came back to ESO for some actual fun playing.)

@Azuramoonstar I agree that company need to earn cash to keep servers online etc. But when for example out of 74 mounts only 4 can be earned in game, isn't it a little to much? I just think that ESO slowly lost the balance between the content you can earn in game and the content for which you must pay for.

The in game mounts go as fast as the paid for mounts. I do not think this is a good example to your point.

    Exactly! It's not f2p with a f2p business model.

There is a simple reason for all of this and it's cause of overhead. For some reason many of you believe everything is all prophet on ZOS's end. But how much does it actually cost a month to keep this game running and updating. It's not cheap to run a MMO. The money keeps bleeding out until it's shut down. Servers and Staff to run this game probably cost nearly 100k a month.

MMO's started with the buy game pay subscription model long before WoW was a thought. They where still making Diablo 2. All WoW did was take them from niche games to main stream.

Really tbh I prefer the subscription based model but to many people these days refuse to pay it or claim they can't afford it. And if you can't afford $15ish dollars a month you got more problems then you need and shouldn't be spending hours a week playing a video game to begin with.

As long as it doesn't become P2W then I couldn't be bothered. Like most of the community, at the first sign of P2W, I'll unsub and uninstall in a heartbeat, and ZO$ knows that.

You do realize crown gifting will come in the next chapter in about 2 weeks

This is not a free to play buisness model. As someone on the previous page suggested, go take a look at what F2P MMOs actually look like, and then get back to us.

Nothing new for Western games either.

    Gambling systems
*** way to squeeze consumers for more money, but not a F2P feature anymore.

Yeah "gambling systems" are something that perhaps 10 years ago were only F2P, now they're in every conceivable video game barring a couple.
Ah, e-communities - the "pinnacle" of the internet............yeah, right.

B2P=Buy To Play. Eso is buy to play...you spend $40(or whatever the cost is now) and get a full game with hundreds of hours of content without ever having to buy an expansion/chapter/whatever. This is the same as buying say... Shadow of the Colossus but with more gameplay. Its a full game that can be played indefinately...a good deal for a RPG(MMO or not) by any measure.

F2P=Free to play. This is a game that is free to download to play(most often applies to mobile games, but includes some PC games). These games often are paid for with advertisements, or with extras they sell in game, but can still be played without paying a dime on a competitive level.

P2W=Pay to win. This is a version of a F2P game that CANNOT be played at a competitive level without buying gear(or other buffs). Players who dont spend money in this type of game often are nothing more than farms for those who do.

So to answer the OPs question...no ESO is neither F2P OR P2W, it is simply a game you can buy and play for a full experience, take it or leave it, and leave all the DLC and expansions out of the picture...the base game is complete.

Learn the difference between F2P and B2P OP.

It is not difficult, yet somehow many on here still manage to confuse the two concepts.

It's in the name... Buy To Play means you have to BUY it TO PLAY it...
There's no official site where you can download it for FREE TO PLAY it...
