What do you do if you see a zone chat discussion that you can see is being overly toxic?

I've often seen at times where zone chats can be particularly bad. Some so bad that I feel compelled to throw some kind of nugget of change that I hope might make the chat a bit less destructive and more constructive/friendlier. It can be with making others think about particular topics or being rather random or weird. The effort is put out there to change it up so it might offer some kind of growth. But I am curious what do you do if you see chat being a bit extreme (no naming and shaming plz) name some constructive ways you deter such extreme actions others do.

I turn it off because I know I'll get worked up and I'd rather play the game in peace to the sound of crickets chirping.

    Depending on my mood :

    - I ignore them (doesn't work, they go on, but I don't care)
    - I interfere for the good (works sometimes, sometimes they stop)
    - I try to beat them at the provocation/punchline/toxicity game (works often although not always).

There's that nice little triangle in the bottom-left corner of the chat window, that solves soooo many chat issues. ;)

(there's also right-click->Ignore, when a single person stands out as someone I never want to encounter again.)

Usually either report or leave. Most of the time, I'll just leave, unless it's extremely messed up.

Depends the subject. If its just random people having ago at each other or just being silly....let it go and ignore it completely. But if it someone bluntly being aggressive towards someone for asking a very simple question, I call them out on it. We were all new once....

If someone is being/going against the conduct of the game (eg racist, homophobic, etc etc) I call them out on it and if no remorse then reported.

I never report anyone. Such a convoluted process on PS4 and the chances of that person being removed is probably next to zero. So don't waste my time.

Nothing. It is pretty rare I look at zone chat anyway. If I wanted random chat, I'll be on Discord instead of playing a game. The only time I pay attention to chat is guild conversations (though I usually ignore those), group chat, or Cyrodiil. I usually don't even notice whispers.

But if I see something toxic, I'm generally indifferent. There are juvenile conversations in zone chat all the time. Can't be bothered with that noise.

I don't keep zone chat on in my chat. The front tab only has a couple of guilds I'm in that will show up. Then I have a guild tab if I wanna see all the various chat from guilds and a zone tab if I feel like torturing myself.

I've only had to report twice, once for extreme racist remarks and another bizarre time when a player must have mistaken me for someone else (I'd literally just logged on) and started seriously abusing me in chat, so weird. Usually like most people, I ignore it unless there is a real bullying element to it and then I'll intervene. Sometimes just dropping some humour can defuse an argument before it really gets going and yes there is always shut the chat box option, I always keep it closed in starter zones...

    Ignore it!
I usually only glance at my chat window if it is "colored chat text" Guild Chat or Group chat. Just about anything in "white" gets ignored as it is zone or area chat.

If it’s offensive enough, I silently report it. Case in point: a piece of excrement masquerading as a human being was making graphic pedophilia-related jokes in /zone the other day, and I went through the labour intensive process of reporting the %*#%. If it’s just your run of the mill trolling, I ignore it. The reporting process is often more trouble than it’s worth on console. :/ I should be able to report someone directly from chat, rather than opening a bunch of menus or trying to physically locate the player to report them from the character interaction options.

All of my characters have a “zoneless” chat tab I can click over to. It quiets the masses and allows guild, group and PM chatter.

Except in Cyrodiil where it’s better to leave zone open, and put the 2-3 loudmouths causing problems on ignore.
