It's simple for me. I just have a conversation with myself.

Me 1: "I want that mount!"
Me 2: "It's 50$ for a tiny chance at it though and they don't even post drop rates."
Me 1: "Why do you have to be so logical?!"
Me 2: "Because wasting hundreds on a game on top of a sub fee without a gaurentee you get what you want is stupid. And one of us has to not be stupid or we die."
Me 1:" SIGH. You're right. Let's save for something BETTER. Besides... I already have 20 mounts."

You still get to see them riding around and you don't get that pit in your stomach when you spend lots of cash and get nada. It might even be more of a treat since you only get to see the really rare ones once in a while.

What I’m curious about is what is the percentage of people getting these “super apex” mounts. The black smoke senche, the blue flame wolf, the icy skeletal senche, etc. Becuase I’ve heard horror stories of people spending $300USD or better, and receiving nada to show for their money. :#

Somebody did an add on that recorded all of this. If I recall correctly, the percentage was actually the same per mount on the super apex as on the apex mounts. You just see a lot less of them because most apex mounts come from gems as you are less likely to get a mount first than 400 gems. There was a thread that compiled all crate seasons so far. I just don't remember where it is.

The crate system is manipulative and deceptive. To me it is like getting a phonecall from a telemarketer about time shares or those emails you get about horny Russian girls. Try using negative association. Like getting car jacked? Enjoy having your bank passwords accessed easily? ESO crates are for you.

Simply think of it like this:

When the game is long gone....you can't take these mounts/houses/ect with you out of game. It's gone. Forever. Now it's ok if you want to spend a little here and there on the game. After all, I know other players who spend a lot more buying a lot of games a year when this is the only game I play (excluding Horizon and Okami but I beat them 3+ times already). Splurging a little bit here and there is ok. But budget. No one understands your financial situation except you and you take control of it.

It just isn't a bit deal to me to not get everything I want. I would feel way to much disappointment with myself to enjoy buying crown crates. Especially considering how insignificant cosmetics items are to my enjoyment of the game. I'd rather accumulate crowns than spend on cosmetics or rng.

      1. Recognize that no matter how flashy the mount is, it wont go faster, and it's something you'll only be seeing 10% of your time playing.

      2. Recognize that any emotes and costumes unless you RP are either situational or will lose their novelty after a while. It's much easier to make a better outfit with the outfit system which is free.

      3. Recognize the fact that any cosmetics you see in the crates will have their shiny-new-ness wear off in about a week.

Tell yourself these three things every time the urge comes up. It's purely cosmetic. You'll forget you have it in a week. Outfit system's a much better way to make a unique look for your char.

Absurd. They aren't separating crown revenue from sub revenue and game purchase revenue. The crown crates are irrelevant to whether they are paying engineers well. The profitability of them encourages further investment in the game to keep people around to buy more.

But wait eight or nine more quarters when the market contracts and you can buy more shares per unit of preferred currency.
Which, luckily, gives you eight or nine more quarters to set aside money to invest.

Or you can just binary trade. Which is like crown crates but the last card dealt usually gives you a lethal paper cut.

      ...

If you love cool new shiny things because they are cool and new
you're going to be perpetually trapped on the treadmill ZOS designed with crates

For me, it has been relatively easy because all the rare and chase rewards
      have not appealed to me
for mounts, like to pick a mount that suits my character and stick with it
even with 15 different characters, already have enough variation in mounts that everyone has something that seems fitting to the character
and am acutely aware of how many cosmetic items already on my account do not get play

if ZOS were making rare fashions available only as chase rewards
would either have to leave outright, or give in to the box scam
far more weakness for fashion than for mounts

That said, still have not experimented with the Outfit system
are we able to use the generic t-shirts and pants that can be stolen in-game
to create very modest day-to-day outfits?
Could probably sell me on a bunch of outfit tokens if that is the case

but really, the way to look at the lotto boxes
is that the only thing you really 'get' for buying them is the brief 'thrill' of the random spin
over a long enough timeline, all cosmetic prizes lose their novelty

that and have left enough MMORPGs
to recognize that none of the items move on to the next one
for instance, none of my fashion in ESO can apply to my Vermintide 2 characters,
so when any new game really hooks me, 'lose' everything from the previous game

it also "helps" to be on disability and have a pretty strictly limited cash flow
such that having spending budgeted out for ESO a year in advance
means knowing there is no wiggle room to spend on uncertainty

this ended up being quite the meaningless ramble

Self-discipline. ZOS doesn't care if you can't pay your bills because you bought too many of their pixels. You need to care. Don't wait until it's too late, and you're being evicted, or losing your car. it might be extreme, but it happens to people who don't recognize that they are addicted to buying this junk until it's too late. If you really consider it, it's not any different from being an alcoholic or addict.

I can afford to buy a lot of crates if I chose too. I don't buy any because to me, it's no better than flushing that money down the toilet. Who cares if someone sits around a wayshrine preening on their crap crate mount. While they sit there hoping somebody thinks they're cool, I'm running content.

Your ability to spend too much money on pixels doesn't impress me. Your ability to tank, heal, or dps is what impresses me...and you can't get any of that from a crap crate. The day that happens will be the day you won't find me anywhere near ESO.

I do believe in supporting the game, so I subscribe, and buy crowns during sales. If ZOS puts something worth my crowns for direct buy in the store, I'll spend my crowns. If not, my crowns sit and I save money by not having to buy as many.

I will not buy crown crates with you today.

Agree with 90% of this, just not the way its phrased. ZOS really doesn't give a shiny shite about its consumers. That much is abundantly clear. If they did they would see it as 'not in societies interest to encourage gambling' and stick purely to the crown store. They would also adhere to the definition of micro-transactions, specifically the micro part. Nothing about charging $24.50 for a single furnishing item, Mount - whatever, is micro.

The more I think about ZOS's behaviour as a company and treatment of consumers the angrier I get and less inclined I feel to continue feeding the monster. As I'm a hypocrite for being so critical yet month after month continuing to join the queue to pay for my sub.

My disagreement is with the tone of it. Yes, you're correct that choosing to waste your money on in-game cosmetics is very much a 'you problem' but the way in which ZOS go about it (IMO) takes away from that quite a bit. Loot crates are clearly gambling. I don't think there is a strong enough argument to refute this. So, because we are all different and have different tolerances many of us have addictive personalities and simply cannot help but buy more and more until we 'win'. I believe, ZOS have a responsibility to the consumer not to offer a service which encourages this damaging trait.

Loot boxes are the ultimate form of snake oil salesmanship. You don't win anything other than pixels. ZOS don't 'lose' anything when you win. They aren't left financially exposed through loot crates yet the consumer is expected to time and time again participate in this game of chance in the hope of eventually getting what they want.

Now consider that as it is gambling, offering a 'free spin' as gambling is addictive is designed to trigger the consumer into buy a couple more 'just to see' if they can get that illusive apex mount. This is akin to a drug dealer offering you a free hit, y'know, just to see if you like it.

Now, lets say you are particularly unlucky, approximately how much would you have to spend to make the 400 crown gems to outright buy a mount? Hundreds no doubt.

But, I think the blame lies with the regulator. ZOS could do the decent thing and stop this, perhaps be viewed as one of the first gaming* companies to see the potential damage this is causing and take the moral high ground but they aren't going to do that. A regulator should have got in ahead of this and created very strict criteria to deter businesses than ZOS from exploiting their consumers.

You can't not mope about it. Moping is a natural product of not being able to afford the shiny. Own your moping! Besides, unless you are one of those people who have managed to (censored) the RNG and actually have a chance of winning something, it'll be a waste of money anyway because you'll get your hopes up and be all "oooh maybe this time" and that vicious Pacrooti will tell you that you have a lucky aura and you'll win an ugly lipstick and a bunch of poisons. That...actually helps, come to think of it, I'm so bitter over my lack of luck that I mope more about that than not being able to afford crates these days. Stupid RNG.
