"Here in his shrine, that they have forgotten. Here do we toil, that we might remember. By night we reclaim, what by day was stolen. Far from ourselves, he grows ever near to us. Our eyes once were blinded, now through him do we see. Our hands once were idle, now through them does he speak. And when the world shall listen, and when the world shall see, and when the world remembers, that world will cease to be. - Miraak

I can't believe this but I'm about to log in to Battlenet. And no, you can't have my stuff! I love ESO too much to quit. Plus, I'm apparently a masochist.

What I want to know is why I can't log in without Steam when clearly ZOS would be authenticate me, seeing as I can log into my account page here and see how many crowns I have, among other things. So what gives?
This creature called a songbird. What a devious creation! This winged nuisance erodes sanity with its incessant chirping. What a brilliant form of torture!

Since you can link your steam account to a normal ESO account, there should be no reason why you cant directly launch the game using ZOS launcher. Apparently the word " linked" does not mean anything in this regard.

When Morrowind came out I bought it in the ZOS store for my Steam-bought ESO. Since then I have not needed to have Steam running when playing ESO. Steam-ESO link was successfully severed. My ESO account was made during the beta and the Steam purchase in 2014. That might have made it easier.

I bought ESO on steam when it first came to steam and have played from steam since.
I have not been able to log on through steam just now with the "unexpected" error.
I can confirm I just logged on using the Bethesda.net_launcher.exe and entereing my login details.
The log in details were the same I used to log in before it was automatic with steam.

It is possible to start the game from outside Steam. The only problem is that if you bought Morrowind through Steam, you have no access to Morrowind. I really wish they would fix this, as I cannot log in through Steam at the moment despite the notification that it has been fixed - and I have rebooted my computer twice, never mind restarted the game.

To launch outside of Steam, go to your Steam library, find Steamapps]Common\Zenimax Online\Launcher and look for the Bethesda.net_Launcher.exe

Run that and you will at least be able to play, albeit without Morrowind.

EDIT: Having said all that, I logged in outside Steam due to Steam issues, and hey presto, there's Vvardenfell! Now I have to check if it works on the Europe Server too, as on NA I have one new character, created after Dragonbones update to test out levelling system cold. So he was born in Vvardenfell.

I'd try the launcher.exe workaround that people have mentioned, but I don't have that. Maybe it's because I'm on a Mac. Though I (very minimally) played the Beta and thus have an "original" account with ESO, later I bought the game (I think it was via a free weekend, and then I bought the gold edition) through Steam and have been stuck with launching the game via Steam ever since. When I buy crowns via the in-game Crown Store, it directs me to Steam; when I start the game, it directs me to Steam; etc.

It seems like such a simple request (migrate my account from Steam to ZOS/ESO) but apparently it's impossible.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? - not steam- ESO.

Not trying to Nanny Nanny Noo Noo here, but I would never buy a game that has it's own login through something like Steam. Simply because it just adds an unneeded layer of complexity to the situation.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I didn't even know what Steam was when I bought ESO. I thought it was a seller of games, not a "platform" that my ENTIRE ESO account would be bound to in ad finitum. Nothing like that was ever stated or hinted at during the purchase process.

Ah well, I'll live with it aka: Live and learn. Read the fine print. There's always a catch. You play, you pay. Lesson learned. You've made your bed, now lie in it. Everyone will suffer now.

    "Hey there!

Thank you for contacting The Elder Scrolls Online Team. My name is Jayme, and I'd be happy to assist you today.

I understand you would like to unlink your Steam account.

After reviewing your account, I'm afraid we cannot unlink you from Steam due to security reasons.

Now, we are aware that some Steam players are having issues logging into the North American and European PC/Mac megaservers.

At this time, this issue seems to have been resolved. If you are still having issues logging in, please restart your client. We also recommend keeping an eye on the forums for any other updates regarding this issue.

If you ever have any other questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact us again! We'll be happy to assist you. Thank you for your continued interest and support!

    Warm Regards,
    Jayme

This is the reply I received today. It would be great if someone from @ZOS could publicly explain WHY this is. How can previous users have both regular login credentials, and steam provided ones for automatic login? What would ZOS do if steam went belly up? I'm confused. I own a license for the game. I have a product key. I have stated I'll pay for ESO+ subscription through ZOS. Hell just transfer my characters to another account and kill the steam one. This can't be so complicated. Hell I'll even buy the damn base game again, just transfer my 1500+ hours of work to the new account.

You can get support to unlink your account. You just have to be uh...persistent. ZOS Support has a habit of doing nothing and giving you canned responses if you're not pushy. Reply to every reply, and don't back down.

If you're a thorn in their side for long enough, they will unlink your account from Steam. I've had it done.

You can't rebuy the game separate from Steam?

Yes you can purchase the stand alone client and will be good to go. I pre-ordered at Beta so I have the stand alone launcher, however I later purchased the steam version since it was more convenient to purchase crowns using my Steam wallet vs the Zenimax webpage. All I did was log in using my normal Zenimax credentials from my stand alone client and everything syncs up and can use both clients interchangeably.

If I rebought the game separate from Steam, wouldn't that mean starting completely over / losing all of my characters? If not, I'd likely be willing to go this route.
