And not because they are there but simply how frustrating they are - i bought countless storm crates - i got EVERY SINGLE gold/purple item + several of the attronach mounts - really the only thing i didn't get was the mount i wanted from the beginning..yeah i don't have to buy them but i do then i don't get what i want and get frustrated and buy more, the more i buy and the longer i don't get the stuff i want the more i start to hate the game and don't want to play anymore or start taking longer and longer breaks... i am wondering if this system is really paying off for ZOS and if more people are feeling like i do... i guess it has to otherwise they wouldn't do it...but then again, EA doesn't seem to do really well with it... at least i am super frustrated now for wasting a *** ton of money without even receiving what i wanted and really don't even want to look at the game anymore for the next couple weeks :-(

Here the thing, these things are optional. There is not reason to get frustrated. Stop buying them. Why continue to do something that is causing you stress when you do not have to.

Forgive yourself for making this mistake. Learn from it and don't buy anymore crates. They are literally conning you out of your money when you buy them.

I like watch videos of people opening like 50 crates at a time. Sometimes they get lucky but usually they don't get a mount. Limit your spending, the mounts are not worth hundreds of dollars.

Gambling is a form of entertainment. It is a great time every time I have been to Vegas. I plan on what I will spend on Gambling and stretch that out for the entire trip. Normally you win small amounts to keep going and it is all in good fun.

I use this example becasue this is the same thing. Opening crown crates is fun. I enjoy it. I use a pre-defined amount of money that fits in my budget and enjoy it.

It is better to know you limits and plan these kinds of entertainments out and stick to that plan. You will remove the stress involved and relive yourself of some in the process becasue you are enjoying yourself.

    Good luck

There's nothing wrong with OP venting frustration and being honest about the cause. I hardly ever go to a casino, but I'd be lying if I said the few times I have gone that I stuck to my original budget. Being told after the fact that, well, you didn't have to spend the money, isn't a very productive or empathetic response.

To the OP, I feel your frustration. ZOS makes it too easy to overdo it and keeps you hoping the next crate will be the one. What's worse is that the crates are likely the only way to get the item you want and it's a form of control; you see valid alternatives (the Crown store) that offer a way out of the randomness of gambling, but you both know that ZOS will make more money off of you by dangling the carrot. The idea that they willfully do this to sponge people is infuriating.

Personally, I never purchased crates in SWTOR, nor do I do so in ESO for this reason. At least in SWTOR, the items were not bound so you could sell them on the auction vendor. ESO's response is to allow players to convert unwanted items into gems ... and then have a list of consolation items you can buy with gems, which just continues to play on people's addiction.

    You're right to be frustrated.

Dude, $40 is 15 Crown Crates. With $40, you can buy numerous games out there that are essentially “bundles” which include multiple games all-in-one.

For example, you could buy Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy. That includes the first 3 Crash Bandicoot games, completely remastered in 1080p/4K. And I believe at 60fps. Not a fan of platforming? Pick-up Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 Remix. That game consists of the entire Kingdom Hearts line-up (the first 6 games), minus 2.8 and Kingdom Hearts 3. KH3 having not been released yet, by the way. And 2.8 is the prologue to 3, which came after the 1.5+2.5 HD bundle. And naturally, it too is again at 1080p/4K at 60fps.

Mind you, those are all just examples. There are so many games out there that you can pick-up for $40, that are absolute steals for their price. And even better, there is no RNG involved about what you’re getting. Or little cosmetic bonus. N’ah. I’m talking entire games that bundled onto 1 disc (or download if going about digital purchasing), that will certainly keep you more entertained than a mount or vanity pet.

Pretty sure they are worth nothing, because I'm also pretty sure they are still ZoS's intellectual property and can be stripped from you at any time for almost any reason...your renting some virtual crap...

True. I spent a couple hundred dollars on RNG on a game with that got shut down a couple years later, so I lost EVERYTHING. I learned my lesson from that.

the reason why crown crates exist is because there's hundreds of thousands of people like you, that get frustrated and keep buying. You're not going to achieve change, but for peace of your own mind, break the cycle, take a breather, only spend a pre-determined amount on crown crates and not let yourself get more

I agree with you about everything, but the OP didn't mention about being forced into buying things. It is true, no one is forcing us to buy, but using the word "force" is misplaced here but it is better to say to OP to have better self control. Only you can force yourself to buy stuff, so therefore, only you must have better control over yourself, only you can resist the urge to tempt to buy and waste money on things that is not worth it.

Kid, you just got pawned by ESO, and on top of that you now have to endure all the posts in this forum telling you that you are a fool, lacking self-control, and that you can only blame yourself. Haha, welcome to a friendly rpg community ;)

If it's any consolation, ESO knows that millions of people have, more or less, insufficient impulse control because of a weak prefrontal cortex, which is not fully developed until you are 25-30 years old, so they laugh all the way to the bank when people like you fall in the gambling trap. It's so predictable that it's funny. And it's so nicely done, and clever, that one can almost "respect" it, in a way >:)

Because they are getting away with it. The majority of gamers don't care enough to react.

Clown crates are a predatory implementation designed to get the maximum amount of money from a customer and in no way reflective of the simple work that goes into re-skinning or making a mount etc.

Adding hidden items to the crates pushed me further away. No-one i play with buys them and all shop in the crown store to get items they see a value to.

I would not be surprised is there was algorithms running in the script that monitors customers behaviours and alters there drops accordingly to fully maximise profit. There is no morals here or any regulatory bodies checking, ZOS literally can do as they please in these regards.

The problem is there are no good or even decent items in the store, the only good items are in the crates.

So if you want to enjoy the game you really have to give in and buy them, they don't leave you with a choice.

They are sticking more and more items into them instead of bringing them to the store (December showcase is pathetic), however if you do buy them, they will just continue the trend.

That being said, despite really valueing appearance items, I took a stance to never buy a crown crate. Got myself the stealthy rogues pack before it gets off the store for this month and next month I'll see if the new showcase will include anything that will look good on my alts.

Personally I think 99% of good items are contained in crates and this trend will continue. Crates are profitable so they will have no intention of stopping them any time soon. As I already mentioned, in my opinion you have to buy them in order to enjoy the game, so absolutely will continue buying them. I enjoy having better items.

'Really valuing' appearance and yet not buying crates sounds like a problematic scenario in this game. Nearly all of the visually appealing items are contained in the crates. They don't even stock the store with a reasonable amount of costumes, mounts, hats etc. There's only a couple for each category.

    Virtual Gambling!!!This is Highway Robbery!!!
I have 400 gems saved up for such occasions but Can't use Crown Gem currency on Crown Crate items...
Then WTF is the point of having them! I'm not going to Buy Storm Crates, and I am DONE BUYING CRATES in general...
And this Latest Flame Theme is laughable and increasingly more illuminating of the absurd amount of replication...
You can only have so many elemental themes.... Hey idk what the next Crate them is gonna be but I can promise there will be some variation of Bear, Camel, Guar, Horse, Senche, and Wolf... Edit: And absolutely no originality

Considering the RNG on the apex mounts is actual physical garbage, I can't help but think this new iteration of crates is the wrong move.

Personally wanted to pick up a couple more wild hunt mounts (one of the coolest seasons), but now the chances of being able to do so are slim. Disappointed.

every few months you get a costume like the battlemage appearing and then you snatch it. The store selection is really poor and getting poorer, but as long as you're patient, you can collect a good selection of costumes.

It's roughly a 0.2-0.3% chance to get a specific Apex mount like you were trying to do.

That means if you bought 1000 crates, you'd have a 92% chance of the specific mount dropping.
