Gambling is a form of entertainment. It is a great time every time I have been to Vegas. I plan on what I will spend on Gambling and stretch that out for the entire trip. Normally you win small amounts to keep going and it is all in good fun.

I use this example becasue this is the same thing. Opening crown crates is fun. I enjoy it. I use a pre-defined amount of money that fits in my budget and enjoy it.

It is better to know you limits and plan these kinds of entertainments out and stick to that plan. You will remove the stress involved and relive yourself of some in the process becasue you are enjoying yourself.

    Good luck

Very good example of responsible gambling. The gambling becomes a game, the tension and uncertainty entertainment. Find out what is a responsible way for you. How much money can/do you want to spend without you feeling bad/guilty afterwards even if you hardly get anything. And stick to that no matter what you win/don't win. And if you know you can't keep yourself from spending more then you should/can, and will feel bad or worse after.... don't tempt yourself at all and stay away from gambling all together as you might be gamble addiction prone. And the more you do it the worse it can get.

It's roughly a 0.2-0.3% chance to get a specific Apex mount like you were trying to do.

That means if you bought 1000 crates, you'd have a 92% chance of the specific mount dropping.

Not true. Your chance would still be 0.2%. Every time when you get an item it does not increase chance of you getting a higher tier item, or a different item. The chances stay exactly the same. You simply would have 1000 tries at a 0.2% chance.

And not because they are there but simply how frustrating they are - i bought countless storm crates - i got EVERY SINGLE gold/purple item + several of the attronach mounts - really the only thing i didn't get was the mount i wanted from the beginning..yeah i don't have to buy them but i do then i don't get what i want and get frustrated and buy more, the more i buy and the longer i don't get the stuff i want the more i start to hate the game and don't want to play anymore or start taking longer and longer breaks... i am wondering if this system is really paying off for ZOS and if more people are feeling like i do... i guess it has to otherwise they wouldn't do it...but then again, EA doesn't seem to do really well with it... at least i am super frustrated now for wasting a *** ton of money without even receiving what i wanted and really don't even want to look at the game anymore for the next couple weeks :-(

This is excactly the reason why Crown Crates should not purchaseable for real life money (or crowns)! there is no place for gambling for real money in a video game!
Some people have difficulties to refrain themselves. Gambling touch part of the brain that can lead to this kind of behaviour. Winning release dopamine which make you feel good, losing make you feel bad. This can lead to compulsatory behaviour. This is a method well known by those that put those system in place, and that's why it's so dirty. It's playing arround with people feelings to make they purchase stuff!

Glad that the EA scandale will certainly force the gaming industry to drop that dirty method!

Dude, $40 is 15 Crown Crates. With $40, you can buy numerous games out there that are essentially “bundles” which include multiple games all-in-one.

For example, you could buy Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy. That includes the first 3 Crash Bandicoot games, completely remastered in 1080p/4K. And I believe at 60fps. Not a fan of platforming? Pick-up Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 Remix. That game consists of the entire Kingdom Hearts line-up (the first 6 games), minus 2.8 and Kingdom Hearts 3. KH3 having not been released yet, by the way. And 2.8 is the prologue to 3, which came after the 1.5+2.5 HD bundle. And naturally, it too is again at 1080p/4K at 60fps.

Mind you, those are all just examples. There are so many games out there that you can pick-up for $40, that are absolute steals for their price. And even better, there is no RNG involved about what you’re getting. Or little cosmetic bonus. N’ah. I’m talking entire games that bundled onto 1 disc (or download if going about digital purchasing), that will certainly keep you more entertained than a mount or vanity pet.

I'm kind of curious... someone playing ESO and you think they'd be interested in other types of non-sword & sorcery or non-MMO games? Personally, I play only a certain type of game, currently there are no other types of these games on the market. I'm not a 'game hopper' and I much prefer games that have no end, which is why I enjoy ESO. Not everyone who plays games likes to play ANY game that comes along, there are many of us here who are playing ESO solely because of what it offers and because there are no other games currently offering the same things on the gaming market.

Yes indeed. I like MMOs specifically because they morph, grow, change etc. It's like an investment; sometimes you get a dividend, others none but it works out in the end (with respect to "how much entertainment I get for my sub). I haven't game-hopped in years. I ended up with sooooo much shelf-ware I stopped doing it. I find an MMO I enjoy and that's where I "invest" my time.

Here the thing, these things are optional. There is not reason to get frustrated. Stop buying them. Why continue to do something that is causing you stress when you do not have to.

It's called gambling. You may have heard about how it's very addictive to some people. Oh wait, sorry, loot boxes are waaaaay different, my bad..
(In some ways this might actually be worse than regular gambling, since it also preys on people who have OCD and/or are super completionists)

I do hope governments around the globe do implement some laws regarding "lootboxes".
Or at least the gaming industry in general agrees on some rules.

    My suggestion:
Every game offering lootboxes must implement a mechanic that caps the money a single person will eventually have to spend to get each and every single item by amount X per year (or fiscal year).
If there's more than one "season" of lootboxes, amount X has to be split by the number of seasons.

The implementation may be like ESO's gems, or rigging the numbers.. in its most extreme form granting every item the customer did not get so far inside his final lootbox before going over the cap.

    Improvements welcome! ;)

Y'know...I really wonder what percentage of people who buy "gambling" crates/boxes etc. in games are addicted. It's not good that anyone is, of course, but humanity being as it is, we sometimes stumble and fall (and not just gambling). I'm having trouble with not having numbers by which to judge. I simply have no idea, nor have I seen anything like factual numbers as to how many people are addicted and whether that should be something that curtails the behaviour in everyone.

Be kind of like closing Vegas because too many people are addicted.

All that said, I don't gamble, never have. I DO buy crates because I don't see it as gambling. I always get something for my money.

Anyway, I'm just curious and would love to see any vetted studies on this issue. I haven't found any in all the commotion about it lately. TIA for anyone who can aim me in that direction.

Good advice. This is pretty much what I do when I gamble. Never been to Vegas myself. However, there is a Casino here locally I never stepped foot in. I hope to experience what it's like to be in a Casino at least once or twice in my lifetime.

I've been to many casinos (living in places that have them and visitors wanting to go to them) and I really dislike them. NOISE, lights, flashing, beeping ugh. It's worth a visit to have the experience as some folks really like it. I used to cringe when visitors wanted to go to ours. Got to the point where I'd take them there and come back for them at a pre-arranged time. ;)

In some situations yes. There are regulations in place to make sure that casinos do not abuse vulnerable people, that vulnerable people can not get their hands on too much alcohol, that children can not become brides, nor can be abused... Or are you against that too?

Are you comparing crown crates to child abuse? I'll assume this was unintentional on your part, as that would be rather crass.

I just think there are better alternatives than outright criminalization.

I could understand, I guess, why you can't sell crown crates mounts/costumes in guild stores. The prices would be insanely high too and the selling rate of crown crates would drop, probably. I've bought 4-pack crown crates two times since I started playing ESO a year ago (doom wolf..and recently ice wolf)...and in both cases I did got what I wanted.. plus bunch of crap I'll never use or "wear" because it's just..........ugly 0_o. Oh well

BUT this ZOS system that I can't sell the crap back to get gems back is just plainly f***** up. I can sell potions/exp scrolls and ugly "art" (or furniture, as they like to call it) back.. which usually are worth so little gems.
