It's time based so if it's happening too often, you don't have enough DPS on the things that are making him invulnerable.

Well. They can. But nothing else really pleases people.
How about instead of invulnerability, the spheres "let him release his anger." and increase damage. Or something more interactive. Not just more health, more time. The assembly general is more interesting, even for a long fight. It has a big boss with "destructable parts." Breaking the fight into sections.
