Why does my resto staff do more damage than my lightning staff?

I have more spell damage on my lightning staff bar, and as a dark elf I have a passive that increases shock damage. I am also using sharpened on my lightning staff which should result in more damage than the defending trait on my resto staff. My max magicka is the same on both bars.

Are the quality and level of the staves equal as well?

are you using war maiden? resto light/heavy attacks are magic damage where as lighting light/heavy attacks are shock/elemental damage

edt for ps. are your spell damage & crit values the same on each bar?

Sharpened does not show up in the Tool Tips, only the base damage for the weapon that everything scales from.

Which begs the question, how are you determining the damage?

And, do you have the same skill loadout on both bars? Class Passives have a dramatic effect on this, and if you don't have the same skill mix, that can affect the damage output. Although I would imagine you would have more class skills on your Destro Bar than on your Healing Bar, unless you are a Templar.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

When you "more damage" do mean Light Attacks or a full Heavy Attack. Both Lightning and Restoration Heavy Attacks involve 3 "pulses" but the Lightning attack has an additional amount of damage after the 3rd pulse. So I thought this might be the explanation if you were just looking at the Light Attacks however looking at the base skill coefficients for the 2 it seems that the Restoration Staff is set to do more damage.

So the tooltip and skill coefficients for the Shock Stafff read (from here taken from the latest patch):
    • Over 1.8 seconds: · Deals $1 shock damage per second · If channel completes target is struck for $2 Shock Damage
    • $1 = 0.0110548 Magicka + 0.441942 SD - 0.733473 (Magicka, R2 = 0.999998, ratio = 39.98)
    • $2 = 0.0154242 Magicka + 0.618731 SD + 0.205584 (Magicka, R2 = 1, ratio = 40.11)

    and Restoration Staff:
    • Deal $1 Magic Damage over 1.6 seconds · 20% of damage caused is absobed as healing
    • $1 = 0.0408976 Magicka + 1.63018 SD - 2.37173 (Magicka, R2 = 1, ratio = 39.86)

If we taken these tooltips and transform them into overall Heavy Attack damage we get:
    • Shock = 0.0353232 Magicka + 1.414226 SD (over 1.8 sec?)
    • Restoration = 0.0408976 Magicka + 1.63018 SD (over 1.6 sec?)

Ignoring the time taken per attack this leaves us with the Restoration HA being 15% more damage than the Shock HA which is a little surprising. Now I don't think those times are actually accurate since Morrowind and they changed the HA times. So in the end it may turn out that the Restoration/Shock staff DPS is closer or the same. Actually in-game testing would be needed to confirm this.

Note, just did some quick tests on live and the previously given skill coefficients may not be 100% accurate as I can't get the the actual damage done to exactly match. Using identical Restoration/Shock staves with identical character stats I get the following:
    • Shock = 1548 x 3 + 1794 = 6438
    • Restoration = 1824 x 3 = 5472

So the Restoration pulses for more but the extra damage at the end of the Shock HA means it ends up having 18% more damage. I'm going to have to test the skill coefficients and LA/HA formulas more on the build editor to try and get them to match better to the live game.

I remember the days back before the Thieves Guild patch, when Magic and Elemental damage were separated in CP so you'd specialize in one or the other, when the destro passives were weak, WoE was weak, and only magsorcs and magdks would use destro staves. In those days, magblades would do better DPS weaving with a resto than a destro because the class was speced for Magic damage and resto weaves were stronger as a result.

Anyway, that's all irrelevant now. But as someone mentioned earlier, if you're wearing War Maiden, that would buff resto attacks.
