How do you feel about Frost Tanks

  • Sigourney_Frost
Because I do not see an example of how I use Frost Staff Taunt, I will share.

I play a Warden total support.

Bar 1 Frost Staff: Elemental Blockade, Force Pulse, Gripping Shards, Arctic Blast, and Ice Fortress Ult Permafrost

Bar 2 Resto Staff: Mutagen, Enchanted Growth, Budding Seeds, Growing Swarm(Still Leveling AC), and Lotus Blossom Ult Healing Thicket

I am a Nord and ware 5 Heavy and 2 Light. I made Seducer 5 and Magnus for the 3 bonus. I have no Mana issues.

I have come across groups that steam roll and my heals are great(sometimes not needed at all), but then I come across the groups where tank isn't a tank...
This is where I shine. I Tank and Heal the group.

But having a Taunt on hand with a normal group I have saved a squishy, and prevented total wipes.

Will this be viable at end game? Who knows. I am having a blast!

Speaking of the frost taunt, am I the only tank who thinks it's annoying when players unknowingly pull with heavy attacks? Although, it's kind of funny and satisfying when the boss flattens them in one or two shots then I get control back.

I just don't take the passive that gives the taunt, I made an ice warden dps and while the other classes leave her behind a bit she is still fun

It was a stupid descision to change the ice heavy to a taunt, I do a fair bit of tanking and I need a taunt that's instant, not one that has a think about it and turn up a bit later :/

If your helping new players through a normal dungeon you have to keep the boss off them as nine times out of ten if you fail they die. It's all well and good for some smug git to brag about soloing vet hard mode or some such but most players ain't that good and never will be that good. They need a tank that taunts instantly not after it's had a break and a cup of coffe

Not really sure why this was implemented, even as a magetank (nightblade magicka flavour), shield+sword worked just fine.

For some reason I just really liked how you said " magicka flavor" idk, i just found it funny.

They should just give destructive clench a taunt effect on frost staff. I actually liked using frost staves, but now they are useless.

Here's a good frost tank set for those feeling inspired or curious

    Undaunted Bastion Set

    LEVEL 50 CHAMPION 140

(2 items) Adds 1064 Max Health

(3 items) Adds 1935 Physical Resistance

(4 items) Adds 1935 Spell Resistance

(5 items) When you taunt an enemy while you are under 60% Health, gain a damage shield that absorbs 13760 damage for 6 seconds. This effect can occur once every 10 seconds.

I'm not really sure this is a good frost tank (or any tank) set. If your group is decent, you will have 0 percent uptime on the 5piece.

    Fine round 2

    Syrabane's Grip Set

    LEVEL 50 CHAMPION 160

(2 items) Adds 129 Magicka Recovery

(3 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage

(4 items) Adds 967 Max Magicka

(5 items) When you block a Flame, Frost, Shock or Magic Damage ability, you restore 860 Magicka. This effect can occur once every 1 second.9

Much better, and has good synergy with frost tanking.

You win this round : P

only good vs enemies who use specific elements

I absolutely HATE that they messed up Ice Staves with this tanking nonsense. It's a big part of the reason why Magicka Wardens suck right now too. (for DPS at least)

I hate the frost staff taunt for two reasons, once I had a really fun ice sorcerer that was unconventional but fun to play that got flattened by the change, and two.. I keep encountering players that don't even know the HA on it taunts and they end up yanking bosses off of me while I am tanking
    .
Carnt u just leave out the passive points and still have your frost mage?

They turned a useless DPS weapon into a useless tank weapon.

I would have preferred they kept it a DPS weapon, just teaked it.

Ice staff heavy must be different from other heavies. It must be 1.5 seconds not more for taunt to be viable. Whole build depends on it.

Enjoying mine so far, sorc. Using Warrior poet and BSW (4 piece), 2 x Chudan (7 heavy). Double Ice staff, so

1.crushing shock, elemental blockade, shattering prison, elemental drain, bound armour
2.Bone surge, Empowered ward, Inner rage, Power surge, bound armour

World boss solo machine, although slow

Using destro ult (ice) and Suppression field ults

55 points in magicka 9 in health

    High elf, Mage mundus

About 37k mag, 10.5k stam and 27k health with blue mag health food, over 2k spell damage unbuffed, 25% crit, all gold enchants, gold except rings necklace

Can easily pull a nice amount of dps with this and can still tank very well, resistances are both just over 30k

Ice HA with taunt was one of ZOS worst decisions, made the stave for every other builds useless.

Especially because the boss drops aggro 2 secs after the tank pulled him with frost HA. It's messy.

... and even a hybrid like the one i'm planning I would never take to trials tbh, have a proper raid tank in my arsenal for that.

I can say SnB with frost backbar is viable if you want to stay alive, and you still can give some - defending - support to your team. The main idea behind this is the different resource being used for blocking.

Ofc this is for Warden-tanking since this class doesn't have that 'converter' ability like DKs shield.

I wouldn't dare run a dual frost staff tank and I would cringe if I saw one in a dungeon finder group. However, my Warden tank has sword and board on main bar and a frost staff on back bar. I have him set up so that his sword and board bar is purely for tanking, and his frost staff bar is a pseudo DPS bar that maintains at least some ability to tank. I keep the ranged taunt slotted on his frost staff bar so that I do have an instant ranged taunt, and he also slots crushing shock to interrupt when needed.

My Warden tank is capable of doing all dungeons on normal and vet, and I've tanked normal trials with him. I was actually surprised to see that the setup was working as I was leveling the character, as I was expecting the frost staff tanking to fail horribly. The main use of the setup, beyond having that pseudo DPS bar, is being able to alternate what resource is being blocked with. It was interesting tanking the axes in AA with that setup, since I could just cast my stamina netch and swap over to my frost staff bar to get stamina back. This is not something I'd use in a vet trial, though.

I do think making the heavy attack the taunt for frost staff was horrible, though. People still use it as a DPS weapon and, if they're either trolling or just not paying attention to what skills/passives they're taking, I find (fairly frequently) that people keep taunting things away from my tanks with the frost staff heavy attack. I've heard it suggested that the Elemental Susceptibility morph of Weakness to Elements could have been made a taunt since almost nobody uses that particular morph. Not having the taunt on the heavy attack would be nice, though.

In regards to what content. I notice on these forums alot of people never say what content before hand causing a lot of debate for nothing. Honestly, I thought ZoS was high when they added this but, it works. I just wish that they made frost morr viable dps wise and would split the destro staff into seperate trees giving thdm more identity. All weapon kill lines should have an option to pick passives for tanking in my uneducated opinion.
