But... maybe it's due to how long I've been playing MMO's? After taking part and witnessing the birth of the genre 20+ years ago with EverQuest, Ultima Online, and Asheron's Call; maybe my standards are a bit different for what I want to see in my MMORPG's? I cut my teeth on those first three MMO's, and have loved (and at times hated) the evolution of this genre over the past few decades.

My brother was addicted to EverQuest. I would wake up and see him sleeping at the computer, and then I would wake him up ( just be be annoying ) and ask him what he was doing. :)

One time I seen him pacing back and forth and knew something was bothering him. Our conversation went something like this.

    Me: Are you OK?
Him: No. I don't know what to do.
    Me: What do you mean?
Him: Some girl wants to marry me
Me: What are you talking about? You never leave the house
Him: In the game, some girl wants to marry me. I don't know if I should say yes or no.

I had to laugh a little but I couldn't believe he was all stressed out about a game. :)

I agree with you OP. It's not perfect certainly but ESO has far more positives than negatives. I have been gaming for, oh dear god, 30 + years. There have been better games in that time and many worse games. For me I like the continuity of always having some activity over the horizon...Single player games will always be my preference but you inevitably reach a point where you are "done"...I don't see that happening any time soon with ESO not only because of the multiplayer aspect but also because of the new content and amount of existing really well made content.

Out of curiosity and because the trailers looked cool and because I obviously don't have enough on my plate as it is, just now, tonight, I downloaded and tried another popular MMO which shall remain nameless.

And I truly went in with an open mind, WANTING to like it. I was right in the mood for something new to me. Instead -- I hated it. Didn't like the character design, didn't like the graphics, didn't like the way the controls handled AT ALL. The "choices" that I was given to begin the character's "story" were not particularly consequential. The game was all teeny-tiny figures in a landscape that was much cartoonier than the trailers had shown. And just as I was starting to realize how much I didn't like all this... it crashed on me.

So. that was a considerable hunk of gigabytes that got sent straight to the trash. Could not uninstall it fast enough.

This makes two other major MMOs that I've tried besides ESO and -- Warts and all, I think "our" game is head and shoulders above the competition, no contest. And no, I'm not on the ZOS payroll! All it took was experiencing the competition for about ten minutes to send me running back here.

I'd like to know more about the game "Warts and all" that you played...as it seems like a really strange name for a game :)

did you make a magic wart?

As an old Elder Scrolls player - playing the offline ones since 2003, starting with Morrowind - I'm actually pretty used to the multitude of bugs. I just point them, if nobody has already done it before, and wait for them to be sorted out. They usually are. The devs from Bethesda were much more complacent since often code savvy players got on the game fast and made unofficial patches for it, which is of course impossible for an online game that has most of the code and calculations on the server side. Now probably some of the same players do the addons that fill the numerous UI shortcomings, especially the trade and inventory management ones.

I think the reason Eso is able to captivate so many is because the ES series is extremely popular and immersive, people have wanted to explore more and carry on playing new content and ESO does both of those things. For an ES fan especially I think it's hard to swap once you've started playing ESO

ESO is a beautiful game but it is still far from being perfect. I know I like it but there are some big minuses too. I enjoy the leveling, the quests, etc... but the gameplay...

Everyone sold me ESO as a "much more dynamic gameplay that WoW and co" and a few months later, I have the complete opposite feeling. I can't find the dynamism compared to a war fury or a frost mage on WoW and I feel like I am constantly limited to the skills (in terms of quantity but also diversity) of the first 10 levels of any MMO. For example, the ESO magic sorcerer endgame build really felt like playing a level 20/30 mage on WoW with only 10 or 20% of the potential the class could have.

Don't get me wrong. I still like the game but I feel like there are only two classes (stam or mag) with a very limited choice of skills. Recently, I leveled all the stam classes and the only differences I could find were two class related buffs that I have to keep up while I use my weapons skills (NB : grim focus / retentless strikes ; Sorc : Hurricane / Surge ; etc etc...).

In the end, I can't help but to have that feeling that ESO's skills lack synergy and diversity and I very often find myself googling things like "Are all classes the same in ESO ?" / "Is the only difference between the classes the two buffs each of them have ?" / "ESO class with non-repetitive gameplay" to see if people get the same feeling. The light/heavy attacks and dodge are a nice addition but for me, they're not enough to compensate for the absence of combos between the skills or for the very low diversity of them. An example for people who played WoW, I feel like the frost mage with just the 5 spells of the first levels (Frostbolt, Frost Lance, Nova, Frost Orb and Blink) offers so much more gameplay possibilities than any magic sorcerer build in ESO.

Despite that, I keep playing the game and I enjoy it, obviously not for the gameplay but for the exploration and the RPG feeling to it. It is a pleasure to build characters and have so many leveling opportunities. I'm now doing Cadwell's gold and visiting EP for the first time and I'm in love with the zones. I took my time to explore Stonefalls, loved my first hour in Deshaan and I am definitely planning to complete all the EP zones. After that, I'll finish the last quests of the DLCs.

I am overall every impressed with how much ESO improved compared to the release and I am recommending my friends to give it another chance. I definitely plan to stay here for a few more months (I just bought 3 months ESO+). Even if the gameplay feels limited, it suits me better now that I am getting older but when I feel the need to get some gameplay diversity and speed, I am glad that I still have my WoW activated.

Rereading my message, I realize that it sounds oriented towards WoW so I'll just add that I think those two games compensate very well. WoW's RPG part absolutely sucks. It's been gone for years, after Vanilla/BC and the game offers no freedom for progression, unlike ESO that allows you to do anything you want, whenever you want. Plus, Blizzard pushed it too far by making progression based on daily/weekly quests and over-using the same content over and over again. They had so much money and they turned their beautiful MMORPG into an MMO and never used that money to make it the RPG it deserved to be.

So in the end, it is just my opinion but I'll say those two games compensate very well. I play ESO for the freedom, exploration, RPG side and I enjoy it even if I find the gameplay very limited. When I do, I just go to WoW to play my frost mage and enjoy the raids which are by far and without any contest the best ones any MMO has ever offered. But until tomorrow's raid, I don't want to do the same daily quest for the 50th time and I know I'll be spending my day on ESO to explore Deshaan. Probably excited and impatient to get to the Rift and Eastmarch!

Want eso ranked number 2 mmo after wow? That's pretty satisfying dont see why zos would make fake messages.

Plus have you played bdo?!?!? Graphics look like ps2 graphics.

Dont even think there is much pve in it.

Only good rpg in my eyes is diablo and final fantasy.

Which both come after eso in my eyes

So glad I left WoW. I'd been playing that game for nearly six-to-seven years now, they just offered me 7 free days to come back and I have absolutely no reason to. The last two WoW expansion have just killed any fun I could have had in that game.

    @Vrienda

Agree with you. I put in almost 10 years in WoW, but the last two expansion screwed over players' professions (made them useless is the best description), and they started gating some profession stuff in raids. I also quit D3 - the deletion of the Real Money Auction House is something that game needed. However, Blizzard, in a kneejerk reaction, also terminated the Gold Auction House, and then traiding became almost non-existent. Plus their continued insistence that players must be in a group (which just about cancelled solo playing), ruined it for me. (I had been playing since release)

I went back to Rift (WoW-mini) for about 6 months, then came back here (I played ESO a little over two years ago) and I'm glad I did. I enjoyed the heck out of Morrowind, Oblivion, and mostly, Skyrim).

So, I'll stay here, at least till the next "Skyrim" is released.

There is no other MMO out there that has:

    - Actual meaningful quests
    - Action-based combat

GW2, WoW, and BDO, are all lacking one or both of those things. And that's why, for me, they can't compete with ESO. The "RPG" part in "MMORPG" is very important to me. If an MMO isn't a good RPG (which none of the aforementioned titles are), then I don't find it enjoyable to play.

The Secret World has far far better quests. The combat has its issues though.

But yeah, for questing TSW blows every other MMO out of the water.

I left wow in a day after paying for a month subscription. I think ESO is more than it a game, sometimes I feel like it's experiment to see a society grow. We have our different cultures, jargon, classes, roles, expectations, skill levels, wealth levels, even war. Also it's just such a big world you will find yourself here the next year before you know it.

ESO is the perfect match for me.
