Error 1005 - OSError_AccessDenied

Accessed denied. A file could not be updated due to either insufficient permissions, or the ile is in use by another process.

Get this message after every maintenance. Usually it's fixed after I delete a ton of files and repair the launcher like 20x but it's getting ridiculous. It randomly started a few moths ago. I have it right now and I'm on my 7th repair, still not working yet.

Any advice/help would be appeciated.

    I've had the same problem the last couple weekly updates. The patch upload fails giving me the same error you got. What I've done both times is exit the launcher. Restart, then get an error 11 (I think) when I try to launch. Then I go to the support site here and follow the instructions to repair (including moving the file it talks about). That has fixed it, though I have to 'reeducate' the game on what server I want and sign my life away to agree to all their legal agreements.

    One thing I noticed somewhere in the troubleshooting stuff about failing the updates was to start the launcher as administrator. Next week, I think I'll try that and see if the update does any better.

    I've been playing every day for nearly a year on the same PC and nothing has changed except the game aborting its updates the last two weeks. Since I've not changed anything on my end, I suspect something is going on on the game's end.

    Sorry couldn't help more but at least there is more than one of us with similar problems - again indicating the problem is on the game end.

    Well I've decided to uninstall and try reinstall at this point because it's been going on every patch (including weekly patches). Hours wasted but hopefully fixes the issue. If it reoccurs, I'll try what you do.

    Reinstalled myself. Will see if it reoccurs next patch. @Davorn you might want to try what @AcadianPaladin wrote.

    I've tried to many running as admin, running repair and reinstalled twice.. This happened from multiple different patches and I'm tired of it. I just canceled membership until this gets fixed. No point in spending money on something I can't use.

    Damn. Sorry to hear. I'll have to see what happens next time there's a patch cause I reinstalled last night.

    Okay, yet again, after reinstalling, my first patch since reinstalling this problem has occured again.

    Well when it first came out, I had to delete files in the ESO folder to get it to repair. But over time, that stopped working, in the end I had to reinstall cause I could delete an entire folder and it would bring it back yet wouldn't allow me in the game. This is getting really tedious and it's beyond a joke how there seems to be no proper fix for this.

    Well, again repairing hasn't worked so I swapped to the 32 bit client and it's working (for now). I suspect next patch it'll have the same problems my 64 bit client has.

    @Magic I hope you can get your game working.

    My repair today didn't work, giving me another 1005 error (though I was running the launcher as admin). Rebooted machine. Tried launching game (play). Got error 11 so followed the repair procedures for that again (including moving the files as described). The repair seemed successful. To be safe though I restarted the machine again. Play worked this time and, after reeducating the game about which server/country (again) and agreeing (again) to all the things they want, the game came up okay and I'm playing again. Until next patch.

    I love this game but the whole reason I tried TES in MMO form was the vast scale and that I always struggled in TES4 and TES5 to keep my load order and mods cobbled together. In ESO I want to rely on smart techies who come with the game to keep things running. I bought direct from Zen instead of Steam and use no add ons - all with the hopes of keeping things reliable with less stuff to go wrong. This is quite shaking my confidence in the game and it is hard to stay in love with it worrying that with every patch there seems to be a fair chance I may not be able to play it anymore.

    I join you in that I would sure appreciate some helpful comments from Zen. I have a strong updated computer that has been running the game fine with no changes on my end. Then about three patches ago, this consistently reproduceable problem rose its head. I have to believe it is not on my end.

    I was getting that today and now I see the "Play" button but pressing it doesn't work. The game won't startup.

    FFS, WTF is going on ZOS?!?!

    Had the same issue Error 1005 issue, the only way I managed to fix it was to run the launcher as Administrator and do a repair.

    Thanks for that link to autorun ESO as admin. I've been manually doing it and, even as admin, it failed the patch update today with a 1005 Error. But probably good to run the game as admin all the time anyway.

    Sounds selfish I suppose, but it is of some comfort to realize that I am not struggling with this alone - that others are having similar problems. That helps assure me that my strong computer that is fully up to date is likely not the problem.

    I've always ran it is admim, manually too though. 32 bit client is working, 64 bit client is not. I sent in a ticket and Zos replied (I haven't read it, just got the notification that there was a response) but I'll be checking up on that tomorrow.

    Sorry to hear it didn't fix the problem for you. Hope you can get some resolution soon. :) And yeah, it is always good to know you aren't alone with a problem like this, so it can't just be fobbed off as "your setup".

    Nothing seems to correct this issue. I'm tired of having to find work arounds after each patch. I'll just cancel my subscription until they can get the patcher to work correctly. I don't have time for amateur hour at Zenimax.

    I'm done until this is fixed. I have this issue, my wife has this issue, my brother has this issue, and one of our guildies. 4 Subs gone until it's corrected.

    I have had this issue for the past 4-5 weeks (after monday updates). Someone posted in another thread about this that it is a problem with Windows updates and you have to run Windows update, then restart and repair.

    I have done this process for the last 3 weeks that I had this happen and it has worked. I tried that process today (ran windows update, updated, restarted then tried to repair) and I am getting that same error.

    Not sure what the heck else to do. You are right though...this is getting DAMN tedious.

    I submitted a ticket the first time this happened. They had me run the game consultant and submit it to them. I did that and they sent me an email with a link to their customer support page and suggested I update my graphics card (lol my graphics card is always up to date).

    I wish I would have taken screenshots of the email exchange so I could have posted it everywhere. It was pretty laughable.

    Well they've asked me to do the same in terms of the game consultant. Hopefully they won't be expecting me to upgrade my graphics card too.

    I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. My graphics card is an NVidia 880. It is always up to date and runs everything else just fine.....so I highly doubt it is the graphics card. I think it has something to do with their patches and the Windows updates because updating Windows and restarting then repairing actually worked for the past 3 patches.

    But today there wasn't a Windows update so I am bogggled....mostly by their lack of a response since we seem to get 2-3new threads for it every patch/week.

    I play on a laptop and my graphics card is fine. Yes I play in minimum, but that's cause I've never cared about graphics (I came from runescape where nice graphics are non existent). It could be something to do with windows update. I'm going to do this game consultant thing now and reply to them.

    @Magic thanks for the updates and letting us know how that ticket thing goes. Like others, I run a good Nvidia card and use GE Force to keep it constantly updated w/ latest driver. And I have Windows doing updates - some automatically and some letting me know, then I do them so don't think that's the problem either. Urp.

    ZOS, just tried again 2 minutes ago and I still have this crash box popping up as I click the "Play" button. The issue has NOT been resolved as you claimed with the banner when logging into the forums. FIX YOUR GAME!
