not really. The reduce cost of block&bash glyph is what is carrying those builds.

Yes, but without Impregnable you either go full sturdy and lack crit resist or you go for impen and lack block cost reduction. A choice you don't have to make when wearing impregnable. Your defense is fully set and you are free to go for whatever you need instead of crit resist.
It opens up a lot of possibilites. For the better and the worse.

But yes, root of permablocking is the screwed way this game calculates block costs.

On a magbuild. Wizards reposte, transmutation, skoria, two willpower swords or trans staff is the way to go. The biggest reason transmutation and wizards reposte are so badass is because of the benefits they give to your group as well as you. Allowing your healer to bring SPC and another group buff set. Wizards and trans together while small man without a healer will still make you a very welcome asset to any team. While solo you still reap the benefits of defense on both sets.

Impreg, while probably better than transmutation solo...means that for group play you wont be quite as effective. Although for templar small team healers, impreg allows near permanant block casting with all sturdy traits.
