Got scammed?

Yesterday I was contacted by some dude to purchase a couple high priced items. I put my stuff in the trade window, he then put the gold in his side of the window. He then removed the gold and hit accept with 0 gold in his window... I asked him to put the gold back in, he cancelled the trade and tried to redo it, same thing happened. I then asked if he was disabled, or legally [snip] (how come I have to spell this incorrectly? since when is this a curse word???). He ignored me, and I did not get the sale. After letting a couple trade guilds know, turns out he has actually been successfully scamming a ton of people. PROTIP, do not accept trades if there is 0 gold in the other dudes window.

Seems like this type of scam is rampant atm. :( I really hope ZOS would do something about it (wishful thinking, hahah).
Looks like its better to avoid trading for now...

I wouldn't avoid trading, just don't hit accept trade when the other person has 0 gold in the window.

One of the oldest tricks and scams of online gaming. I saw this over 20 years ago when I played Diablo (the first one).

Anyone that attempts this is doing so willfully. Best to immediately cancel the trade and blacklist that player.

On a related note if someone agrees to pay an insanely high price for the doodad you just found but wants you to COD it to them. Don't. Unless you know you can trust them. There seems to be a current trend of trolling for the other person to just not accept the mail. And now your item is locked in the mail for a couple of weeks.

This is the third day in a row I've heard about this guy doing that. He also tried it with me, but I had already heard about him from guild chat, so I stopped him at the first whisper. ZOS doesn't normally get involved in this kind of stuff, maybe if he gets a bad enough rep, they will.

It depends on the context it is used. If used to identify a legitimate mental handicap, it is not an insult but still an outdated word. If used as an insult or in degrading manner it is an offensive word.

You need to update your books. Might not be an actual curse word but it is considered derogatory and it is obvious you were using it in a derogatory manner.

i think we have to think hard about how to cater towards a community that automatically minimizes exploits, scams and bots... not sure how to do that - gw2 is really good in that i think...maybe block access for russians (lol)?

I was using it in the proper context, I was legitimately wondering if he had mental disability. It is a certain type of disability, yet disabled is not a curse word.

COD mail expires after 3 days. Or is it bugged too?

In the game, perhaps. But the forum censor can't distinguish between medical and derigatory context, so it blocks all usage of the word. Nothing to be upset about. There are other ways to describe what you meant (e.g. intellectual disability).

Good information. The person I was talking to that said this kept happening to them said COD mail was tied up for 28 days. So maybe they were telling stories about the whole problem.

Why not use COD option when trading?

Especially if you trade for gold, not only trade goods.

As far as i know its not bugged, and why neglegt it even if its expiering after 3 days? - In direct trade you get the items that same moment ! With that logic you even Gain 3 days storage time when using COD.

The proper context is as an offensive word according to the dictionaries, that word is not a name of a specific mental disability, it's an offensive name for conditions relating to the effects of mental disabilities:

    ********
    rɪˈtɑːdɪd
    adjective

    dated offensive
less advanced in mental, physical, or social development than is usual for one's age.
    "the child is badly ********"

    informal offensive
    very foolish or stupid.
"in retrospect, it was a totally ******** idea"
