There are thousands of casual players who only PvP occasionally. They are not running min/max PvP sets and do not know all the tips and tricks of survivability that pro players gain from long, long experience in Cyrodiil. And they never will. A large portion of player base simply do not have time to play enough or research enough to "git gud" at PvP. And removal of AoE caps just crush the casual player. If they go solo, they get demolished by a pro PvPer. If they go out in a small group, they get demolished by a pro PvPer. Large groups provide the instinctual "safety in numbers" for more casual players. There are a lot of players who want to log into ESO every week or two, find a group, maybe take a keep or two, or just have a big long battle where they do not die every few seconds and return to horse riding simulator mode. And that is it. They go back to PvE or different game and only return to ESO PvP occasionally. They are not diehard PvP players and never will be. But do get in the mood for PvP from time to time.

Removing of AoE caps is a great boon for the handful of elite players who want large groups of casual players to always die, quickly and immediately and without mercy.

But this is bad for the health of the game. Casual players who only PvP from time to time need to feel like they can go into Cyrodiil and have at least some chance of having fun. Otherwise, they will simply leave and go play other games. Yes, it would be nice if every casual player who plays for a couple hours every other weekend decided to put in the incredible amount of time and effort to "git gud" at PvP. But that is simply not going to happen.

At some point, you need to find a balance where elite players win most of the time, but casuals still have some chance to contribute and feel like they can have fun in Cyrodiil. And that largely amounts to using strength in numbers against superior individual opponents. AoE caps provide a bit of that "handicap" against casuals just getting wiped nonstop by smaller groups of better players.

And while many players view Cyrodiil as a place where skill and experience and expertise should always win out, it is a completely mistaken approach. This is not a game with any kind of skill-based matchmaking or tiering or different campaigns for different quality players. In an environment like that, where you have such a mish-mosh of awful/bad/average/good/great/elite players, your goal as a developer is to make the game fun for as many people as possible. The best players will still die far less and still get more kills than casual players. But those casual players can still group up and have some semblance of success.

It is a delicate balancing act. I am not sure ESO has it completely right because PvP is already pretty unforgiving to new and casual players. But a complete removal of AoE caps will just make that worse. Just skew the game more toward the elite players and away from the casual players. And having the vast numbers of casual players in ESO feel like PvP and Cyrodiil is just not worth going into is bad for business and bad for the health of game.

Are there some "pro zergs" taking advantage of this? Sure. But I think nerfs to "pro zergs" are in order, not nerfs to casual players who want to group up for safety in numbers. Perhaps AoE caps could be based on Alliance Rank. Maybe make it account-wide so players with high-ranking characters who play a lot of PvP and should be good enough to not zerg cannot use low-rank alts to take advantage of AoE caps.

But a complete across the board removal of AoE caps? That sounds like a great way to drive new and casual players out of Cyrodiil. And new and casual players should have a place in Cyrodiil.

people in pvp complain enough as is, no thank you. and before you jump down my throat, if you pvp and don't come here and cry then you are not the people i'm talking about. i'm talking about the "pvpers" who want "i win" as a skill.

Wow, great written down of the opposite side!

My problem with aoe cap is the demotivating pressure of massive zergs against small numbers.

A good balancing for me will be a good chance to hold against larger numbers with very good teamplay, but very high risk for my team. So you must play as team very good and must have luck to get down the casuals.

The current situation suggest me i can play good as i can and i will never get down the casuals in zerg. And that is demotivating too for the elite players.

My way will be to remove the aoe cap and give counters for the zerg to ambush a small group in bad situations / bad teamplay. So that you have the chance and the feeling you can play against a zerg.
