As long as people are open to suggestions, people will always help. It's the arrogant baddies that think they know everything that get bad treatment.

    OT:
All has basically been said. Just some small tips:

    - If on PC, bind your dodge roll to a key. I use left Alt. This is much more reliable than double tap.
    - use food to increase health and magicka/stamina or all three.
    - Wanna use a staff? focus on magicka.
    - wanna use a bow or melee weapons? Focus on stamina.
    - Attribute points into stamina increases damage of skills that cost stamina.
    - Attribute points into magicka increases damage of skills that cost magicka.
    - Interrupt casting enemies.
    - Block power attacks, and use a power attack yourself to knock a mob down.

Don't just spam one or two attacks. Learn to develop a rotation. An example:
Use a dot. Use another (AoE) dot. Use a CC. Use your main damage attack 2-3 times. Finish with an execute. Try to teach yourself to develop different rotations for different situations. This will help you improvise. With spamming 1 or 2 skills it is possible to get you through the game questing, but if you ever want to do a dungeon you will be hated for it.

Just some things to think about.

But isn't the problem the characters really get weaker as you go making gear and food and such more important. I made a new nightblade just to see if I have learned anything since my first one and was quite dismayed upon leveling his skills and pools decreased. Its a strange world where you get worse as you level. My old one would have killed for that unbuffed stamina pool before I fixed him.

I have 22 skill points that I am not sure if I should spend some on the skills that now have a plus on them or not.

This is a good skill investment strategy to follow

    1. Have one class skill on your bar at all times, swapping them out once the skill reaches Morph stage. Worry about your Morphs later.
    2. Have one weapon skill on your bar at all times, again until Morph stage
    3. Wear a mix of all 3 armor types so they all level about equally
    4. From L1 to L20, invest in attack skills and actives
    5. From L20 to L35 start investing in Passives and Support Skills
    6. From L35 to L50 start investing in Morphs (but only if all your class skills are at the Morph Stage), Passives and Crafting Skills

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Just a FYI anyone that would like to add me to their friends list my characters name is Secile and I am on PC and NA server. I have begun clearing out the quest list I couldn't finish before all this advice. I feel so much better about playing now than before. Made level 16 and working hard on 17.

Being the intuitive game this is...

You cannot run a bow and magic build period. You need to go effectively all weapons and max out your stamina resource pool or staff and magic skills and max out your magika resource pool. This way you will be hugely more combat effective.

Dude, he's questing. If this were a dungeon runner trying to do that, you'd be mostly right and I wouldn't have responded. The OP only mentioned he wants to quest. He can do that in heavy armor and one one handed sword.
I fail to see a reason to encourage OP to make underperforming character only because "he's only questing" at the moment. If he once day decides to run Dungeons and Trials he'll have a bad time and most likely insta-kick from GF groups for playing like this. Not to say he'll have to rebuild everything from scratch only because he was adviced to play broken build from the beginning. That's not insightful. That simply sucks.

If you want to go the mag route look up deltia gaming's leveling build for mag sorc.

    Copy it exactly.

Leveling / questing will be a breeze and you will rarely die in low levels.

You're most likely too low lvl, maybe you rushed through too fast?
