Even bad MMOs are getting 10 year runs these days . Some even longer . There's no way to say how long a good title will last . Not in the foreseeable future would be best option .

    Or longer.

ESO will easily be around for a decade. Just look at SWTOR. It's been around for about 5.5 years and going strong though many of the strong raiders and moved to other games, especially over the last two years. But it's still very populated.

Very good question/pole! Taking in when ps5/xbox..2? Comes out and many will want to upgrade to those platforms I'd say 4. Unless you can upgrade to it with same accounts. As for PC...who knows 6+?!

I'm not saying it's never going to die, all MMO's "die" eventually everything dies. I hope it'll take a decade.

If anything kills ESO, it will be a toxic player base or blatant cash grabbing. So far, the later is manageable though flirting with danger, it's the former that worries me most.

I suspect that TES6 will cut the player base to a degree whenever it's finally out, but there are so many dedicated people that it'll probably be around for years to come. I wouldn't be surprised if it lives until TES7 and they have to shut it down when the technology/code used is too archaic, only a small amount of REALLY dedicated players are left, and the team has moved on. (TES7 is probably 10 years away at least )

    That's just my opinion/thought though.

It will probably remain relevant on PC for quite some time.

However, I don't see it lasting very long on console due to their horrendous optimization. There's just not much else to play MMO wise on console as of now. I expect that to change within the next couple years.

After that, I expect a lot of people to jump ship. Myself included.

I doubt it will completley die out in a long time, at most they will have to go f2p. If they keep doing things like they do now I think it might happen within 4 years

You forgot the F2P option. When flashy animations and silly mounts and skimpy outfits rule the cash shop. That comes before a game dies usually.

New end-gamers take their place. These will be people who grow up in the game.

The biggest issue with end-game these days isn't people leaving, it is that ZOS has made decisions that make it more difficult to transition to it. A lot of these decisions were actually intended for the end-game players, and I think it was done at the expense of everyone else. What I see when I look at the game is people leaving before they get to the end-game, simply because it looks like an impassible mountain. It doesn't block everyone, but it certainly shortens the game for what I have to consider might be the majority of the players.

It'll take more than Morrowind to kill ESO—but 3 or 4 bad patches in a row? Yeah, that'll do it—I'm not saying there's going to be 3 or 4 bad patches in a row, but they're showing with Morrowind that they have a vision for the game, and literally no idea how to execute it properly. This kind of ineptitude if left unchecked will lead to bad patches.

Edit: I forgot that BDO is actually getting a console release. Yeah, when that releases on console—watch out.

when there is a better MMO... or if certain members of the combat design team make too many more ill advised decisions in the name of "balance" that are laughable in the given system.

Is there any adult supervision there?

You are correct in that the learning/power curve in the game turns off many new players. In the nearly three years I played it was actually pretty stunning how many people quit the game within a month of trying it for the first time. Even with experienced players in our guild willing to craft armor, explain mechanics, and run content with the newbies it was still too much for them. And there's the rub. If current end gamers leave then new players don't have anyone to turn to for help making it up that mountain and the end game population will continue shrinking. Just remember those previously dedicated end game players who are leaving had more invested in the success of the game and so were much more motivated to try to bring in and help retain new players than the casuals replacing them who will likely pick up the game for a month or two then move on.
