This should be easy for anyone to understand. I mean a crafted set you can make the perfect trait 100% of the time get all the pieces you need and not to mention in your favorite style.

Dropped sets take time, hours, weeks, hell sometimes even months to get the prefect traits.

That being said crafting shouldnt be useless. I dont think it is. Sure compared to some dropped sets crafted sets seem week but thats how it should be.

I took a year and a half leveling every crafting trait. Don't talk to me about time.

Right me too! The crafted sets should gradually get better and better depending on the traits level... 8 and 9 trait sets should be better or at least equal to any drop set.

This right here ... i feel like the 8-9 especially the 9 traits gear should be as good as drop gear it took a lot of time for me to get every piece of heavy armor blackmithing to level 9 and i still dont have all the weapons done yet.. i feel like they need to add better crafted armor especally tank crafted sets.. hits bark is a good set but its really the only tank set thats worth anything.. armor master is pretty redundant and i feel the 5th set bonus should be something different but with tanking in mind.. as its so easy to get to max resistance cap with our armor master...

Yes overland sets should be better than death's wind.

9 Trait craftable sets however; should be on par with everything (How TBS use to be before the nerf to crit). The new Morrowind sets seriously are not that good, unless hybrid DK/Sorcerers come out of nowhere and are on par with other builds come PVP time. You're intent on that Zos? I really do like the idea but it's just hope for now. How is it that we get 3 craftable sets in Morrowind just like TG/Orsinium? That is lame.

I'm actually ok with 9 trait sets being on par with monster sets. Sadly they are not. That said they can leave everything as is if they implement only one change ...

Add a 10th trait, and after you learn it you can then change any of that item into any style you know.

I agree. I'd say that dropped gear should be 15% better than crafted gear.

Crafters should be rewarded in other ways as well, likely by the following features:
    • Being able to repair gear for mats/craft repair kits
    • Being able to change the style of an item given a sizable amount of style mats and standard mats
    • Combining 2-3 items of identical type (2x swords for instance) into a rerolled version of either item. (<-- controversial diablo-like rng system, but would give a chance of 2x precise swords turning into 1x sharpened)

This is why the best gear should drop as single-use schematics. That way crafting and drops/rewards are both necessary for endgame.

If crafting is useless in endgame, then your crafting system sucks. But the best gear needs to be earned by your accomplishment. The compromise is obvious. Star Wars: Galaxies did it a decade ago. Why this community isn't clamoring for dropped schematics is beyond me.

What if crafters could craft sets that were on par (but perhaps ~5% worse) with boss drops, but only for themselves, and only if they had all 9 traits?

That way, dedicated crafters get gear for themselves that is almost as good as endgame PvE, but they can't sell it to every player with a fat stack of gold.

Edit: re-read and realized we were talking about different things, removed quote.

I'd have to agree. Dropped sets are more difficult to obtain and thus should be better.

Anyone can pay a crafter or in many instances get it for free, and it is very easy to make for those who are able to make it.

The crafting system in this game is too bland in my opinion to have it produce best in slot gear. If it were more dynamic (not sure how they would go about that, I'm an MMO noob) I could accept crafted sets being BiS. It's not like there isn't crafted sets that aren't plenty useful. Of the two characters I'm currently playing the most, they both have a crafted 5 piece set.

As another 9-trait crafter who has spent countless hours grinding for Motif pages, countless more hunting through Guild Traders for the ones that refused to drop (looking at you, Ancient Orc), and hundreds of thousands of gold on both the missing pages and the Nirn traits...I politely disagree with the OP.

Heh, trust me when I say that this crafting system is actually pretty detailed compared to other MMOs. That being said, I tend to shy away from Eastern MMOs, so maybe those have deeper crafting systems.

As for how to actually make it more interesting....I'm reminded of an episode of SAO abridged where the female blacksmith had to play a guitar hero-esque minigame to forge Kirito's sword. It was a joke obviously, but some kinda of timing-based minigame to forge might actually be neat. It would be a UI nightmare to implement in an already-established game like this, but it's fun to dream.

Because PvP is the only thing that matters to me, I want to build my builds, equip my gear and kill people. I should have to go through insufferable and copious amounts of time finding gear in order to make my builds work to compete against other players and until they actually make the PvP sets better for PvP and PvE gear completely irrelevant, I rather be able to craft them quickly and get into the action quickly.

I would never care if PvE got gutted and gear was nothing more than going to the forge and deciding what traits and bonuses I wanted to use on my pieces.

I enjoy the game from the corpses I create, not from the rewards and fancy toys people get from doing something.

I'd prefer a gear hierarchy were sometimes dropped items are better, while other times crafted are better. I also firmly believe in alternatives though not direct equivalents. Which is why I think jewelry crafting needs to be added sooner rather than later.

ESO's problem, IMHO, is that instead of sets and items buffing particular playstyles/builds akin to Diablo 3:RoS. You've got bonuses that are flatly better all around. Also since ESO leans heavily on the "everyone can use everything" mantra. Classes get blurred by using many of the same universally available skills.

My ideal would be to not only have sets and items that buff skills in universal lines, such as how Maelstrom and Dragonstar weapons do currently. But, also have sets and items that buff classes individually, by perhaps altering the way skills and/or passives function, to add more distinctions between the classes.

Well said, maybe make certain sets BOP for 9 trait crafters (Spent almost 2 years* to get 9 traits, the best set we have access to is TBS).. and those sets will be BIS crafting wise...without jewelry. Top pve players can farm VMA for VMA weapons BIS bop, farm VMOL for Alkosh/Moondancer and at the most trade to friends. PVP players get sets that you can sell/trade do whatever, same with crafting. Uh? Okay. You're telling me leader boards on VMA/Trials reward with sick drops, getting Emperor or top 10 in the entire pvp campaign server gives you what? A gold Fasallas guile ring. Or maybe Zos wants players to just grind old content to keep them 'interested' who knows.

The whole set crafting system needs a rework. IMO you should be able to craft traits you desire through combinations of materials similar to alchemy. Let us decide what 2,3,4,and 5 piece bonuses we want out of a generic list and just make all crafted set currently drops. While you are at it include jewelry crafting as well.

Interesting is that master merchant for julianos for me is around 10k piece. this includes staffs who is cheaper to make.
has sold some but is a bit careful not to start an price war in guild store

And we should be able to craft jewelery, simply bundle under blacksmith or other . No upgrades for balance you select quality then you make it.
Main benefit it that it would be easier to fill in blanks. You get engine guardian from WGT but is not able to do it in vet, You add weapons and jewelry from say magnus and an monster set.
Grinding just make you go in circles.

    i tend to agree here...

it feels like many are just looking at reward what i do and not looking at broader scope.

Crafting to fuse drops and change looks of drops... not worth 20ish skills per craft plus time and effort to get motifs and the like - dont get me going on research.

Run around PVE grind should be best - well ok for those for whom pve grind is your thing. but PVP players not so much. Then again i know there are some buy for ap set stores out there.

crafted should be best - ok for crafters but what rewards for PVE or PVP then?

As i stated earlier, the answer to me is to make it so that each brings unique additions to the table that matter so that an optimal set can be obtained by using all the various options.
Crafting stations for good sets in IC for instance is a play in the right direction.
Merchants to sell for Ap various PVE sets is another.
Drops having maelstroms and masters and monster sets plus jewelry is another.
but currently there is nothing beyond style control that crafted sets bring that cannot be done by the others. Sure, crafted might be more convenient but beyond looks you can get it elsewhere by other means so crafted has no guaranteed seat at the table.

IMO when they redid the drops in 1t giving every drop set jewels and weapons. they erred. had they at that point as part of a major overhaul made jewels all drops and weapons all crafted* with the body parts shared (leaving body pieces available from any) then they would have had a better design.

*they could have left maelstrom and master weapons as exceptions or transferred those rewards to maelstrom/master jewels.

this would eliminate much of the over-the-top weapon grind (made so by how many types times traits), left the more manageable armor trait grind and jewelry grinds.

my bet is eliminating drop weapons, swapping them for jewels in the special cases and body either/or plus craft-to-change-motif would be a much better system that still rewards repeated grinds if the RNG is done the way they want it to be.

but you can have a setup where both sides get their day in the long run... either/or is a choice not a necessity.

No, what should be easy to understand is our skills, not some damn random drop, should be applied to all weapons and armor in the game so we can make them stronger.

This system is idiotic. I shouldn't have to find 4+ people just to get a new set of armor while I can't do diddly despite being a MASTER blacksmith, clothier, or woodworker with the mats I have.

Dungeons should be where we take our best gear. Not where we get it.

So, as a hypothetical, the "grind goal" for rerunning dungeon content could be something like special mundus stones that give you a blessing that does something big but maybe has a timer on it.

Run normal maelstrom thru and see the maelstrom bronze mundus appear - a random mundus type that lets you pick a secondy mundus effect but only lasts one week (real time) or 12 hours login/equipped time..
vet maelstrom lets you pick two (secondary and tertiary) but only lasts one week (real time) or 12 hours login/equipped time...
hm maelstrom lets you pick two but lasts a month (real time) or 48 hours login/equipped time..

Craft sets get you weapons and gear thats on par with drops - but no jewels.
Let monster dungeons pledges etc be where you get the materials to make monster sets - all 9 trait sets of course.
So best builds are a mix of crafted and drops by default and the reason to redo difficult content is the additional blessings of the gods but... what have you done for them lately.
