Do you think ESO popularity will recover from current downswing?

From someone who has been here on & off since console launch, this is the healthiest & most consistent ive seen the player base. One Tamriel really put the game in a good place population wise. Some may even say its a little TOO populated.

You gotta understand, ZOS has made it clear since Homestead theres no real new content until Morrowind drops. A lot of people are just logging in for dailies then logging off so there are definitely times where the game isn't quite as lively but the game is VERY much alive.

No, ESO is beyond its greatest days, we will see less and less players.
I am primarily a PvPer and responded as such. When I started we had tons of campaigns and massive player battles without any significant lag.

Now we have 1 campaign that is dead until primetime, 1 niche campaign and 1 primary campaign that is poplocked but even the poplock requirement is far less in number than when the game started. On top of that there are random group wide crashes and random group wide loading screen locks that make it really difficult to even operate as a group. Health bars don't work, and players in your group don't even have bodies...just bouncing chevrons on the ground.

From a PvP perspective the better days were clearly left in the past, and I don't see those days returning with morrowind. There were more people PvPing on Lotro when I left than there are here and this game is merely an infant compared to Lotro.

We have had some improvements, like our inventory not twitching out when we slot siege, and doors open with significantly less usage of the E button but these simple improvements took years.

    ______
From a PvE perspective I would say this game stands to boom if they don't screw it up with bugs.

    Random thoughts:

    - Our 2 trading guilds have been on a constant waitlist for over 2 months. In the past, a waitlist happend very rarely.

    - Every time I log in, I have numerous e-mails from people looking to join. A lot of them discovered a 2 year old post announcing our 2nd guild.

    - Our weekly purges have never been smaller. In the past we'd purge 50+ people a week. Now it's 10 to 20 at most. Sometimes people wait 2+ weeks to get in.

    - Our sales were among the highest we've ever seen since Homestead launch and only saw a drop (about 15%) this past week. That seems due to our power-sellers selling far less last week (and it could be them already starting to hoard for Morrowind)

    - Our peak online times are off a bit from a month ago but not much. We still see 150-180 online at peak times.

    - Our guild events, such as raffles and auctions are going strong, with the highest participation numbers we've ever seen.

What I'm extrapolating from this, at least with the 1,000 guild members in our 2 trade guilds, is that there's still a steady influx of new players and there is FAR less churn than I've seen a very long time, perhaps ever.

Not sugarcoating, yes there are issues, but the game seems to be much healthier than it was a year ago.
    Morrowind should be another boon.

I attribute a lot of this to One Tamriel, and also that there's so much more to DO for "casual" players. Housing, Dailies, etc.

I don't PvP, but imagine where this game could go if they could get that sorted out.

Did ZOS pay cnn to run this story ? It says paid content at the bottom .

Nope but it's possibly the only worthwhile thing CNN has written about since the first Gulf War.

No, ESO didn't pay to have that story run. It says "paid content" as a heading for the "paid content" section at the bottom of their site. Note that if you click on any of those stories, you are usually taken away from CNN.com.

CNN and most media sites do this now, running a widget with stories from aggregators like Outbrain and Zergnet in exchange for them running CNN stories on their network.

The ESO story appears ON the CNN site. it's written by a CNN contributor.

In short the population has drastically changed so ppl who are accustomed to any F2P models seem to not mind this new focus and other than the bugs, many would argue that the game isn't going through a downswing.

(Looks at the 150 friends who haven't logged on in over 6 months)

.... you're allowed more than 100 friends on console? Guessing since it's tied to your console friends?

:( We're only allowed 100 on PC I'm pretty sure.

    @MissBizz

Yeah I think another already repliedut the Xbox live service allows at least 1,000 friends

However what many of us do is join a club on the console that I've seen as many as 35,000 members in one.

The Xbox one PvE club I joined for ESO has over 3,000 active members as of today.

So if you look at that roster, it can be daunting to see who played eso last and what other games they've moved too.

ESO also has a game hub that anyone can follow and they post their just like the website announcements we see on the main page.

Update: technically per the gamehub I have 207 friends who have played eso at one time but after the first 50, it's been anywhere from 30 days to over a year since they've last played.

So we have a good idea of how well games are doing amongst our own small circles.

I myself joined the game during gold edition sale and the amount of new players was huge. And I myself playing only 10% of time I was used to play back when LFG was working. The grind is also down, my 4 trade guilds sales barelly selling now after Homestead hype is over.

So what is you opinion, do you believe Morrowind will bring a positive or a negative change? Or maybe there will be a slight positive change and then a collapse?

Its great! I love the overall activeness. Even though its a bit harder to get some raw mats some times I always love booming towns and wildernesses. Makes the game feel more real and not some dead ghost town of Christmas past.

Morrowind will make ESO great again!
Given the broad spectrum of play styles I've chosen to respond in light of my experience of the state of end game raiding on PC-NA. Many of the guilds I've seen come and go in this space have done so due to the limited amount of end game content.

There is also attrition due to how long it takes for bugs affecting this content and skills to get resolved. I'm looking at you Vet Maw invisible orbs and you sprint lock bug.

I think Morrowind will bring back many who've left but for how long?

Haha I am not sure but I am a little partly part of the dead pvpness atm. I love PvP so much, Captain Rank on the main char I used for it. With so much content like housing and that I got the 4 Pack DLC in November and barely started any, farthest so far is Dark Brotherhood and a little Orsinum. Also with all these great events in a row! barely got 1 jester's banner and New life festival was awesome for its quests mints, mudballs, hats, and towel and of course the skinchanger style was awesome! And now this current one with anniversary boxes on dailies too! So many designs and motiffs that I wanted for awhile! Soooo much stuff lol! I want to get back into Alliance war, mainly do Azura Star for no CP. But just been too busy with other content.

In the 3 years I've been playing I've never seen the game as popular as it is now, it is getting fantastic press everywhere I look, I'm actually meeting random people irl that play ESO or know of it.

Also, a lot of people think that the Morrowind Chapter is actually a separate game from ESO, so when I explain what it is to them (being fans of the series that never played ESO) they go out and buy the game.

So, from at least my subjective experience, it seems more popular than ever... More crowded in game too.

Indications, or player perceptions, is one thing. Hard evidence is another. With that in mind, my perception is that player numbers are just fine.

Look at the link that @SydneyGrey paste there:
    http://steamcharts.com/app/306130
It clearly shows a huge downswing coming from November. This is exactly what I observe in game. The game is far from being dead, but for the last two months I feel less and less popularity. See less and less new players etc...

Well I'm happy for you that you don't notice this. Being naive and unnoticing isn't a bad approach to life, makes you sleep better.

Steam Doesn't even make up the entire pop of a single platform and there are 3 platforms with 2 servers each. So I don't think those numbers are a very good indication of the popularity or population of eso players.

And of course there will be a rush when a major update, whether paid for or free, comes out.

Housing caused a large increase to player base and so will morrowind.

It has to. Theres no any major MMORPG coming in next couple year at least. Also F2P when they decide to do so, will be relaunch for this game. Also I keep fingers crossed that ES TV-show is coming, we need something after Game of Thrones, thats going to be huge thing for ESO too. Not to mention ES6. So that said, push forward said Granny in the snow.

No, no thank you tons of people do not want another dark hbo clone.

To be honest, Id rather have something dark and grey than something altrustic and bs and all happy.

The ES universe has plenty of dark, hell the daedric princes alone cover that description. The only reason it wouldnt be "dark" is because the games themselves have actually made the princes some what cheesey to some extent. Actually do a good vs evil light vs dark with the grey centre then sure it will work and I should note HBO didnt do the "dark" show first infact shows like that have been going for a long time the only reason GoT is even relevant is because its the most well known.

Honestly if i see another good fictional unvierse fall to bad writing due to people wanting some sappy over the top altruistic narrative then im gonna be pissed.

I dont want good ending and bad endings and for my favourite characters to get their happy endings. I want a good story, I want ACTUAL CHARACTERS and I want good writing generally. No more of this PC bs. Just good, old fashion story telling but with common sense.

I think the game has potential. The money grab vs quality is real though, and people will get sick of it sooner or later. If they make contemt, endgame or otherwise worth replaying that isn't shut behind an unrewarding drop system, and focus on just making the game fun then yes, the best is yet to come.

If the fail this then imo pre1tam was the golden age of eso.

When something is new, or there is new niche demand for old resources prices go up - then over time they drop again. And in fact for any given commodity in the ESO market the overall long term trend will ALWAYS be a downward trend.

Too many players seem to think the higher prices as Homesteads went live was the "new norm", it wasn't - is was a brief spike in that otherwise downward trend.
