Do you think ESO popularity will recover from current downswing?

Yea, the greater days of ESO still ahead.
What downswing? One of my trade guilds broke a record of sales last month. There are so many people doing the dailies at the moment thanks to the event that you don't have to wait more than a minute to find a group for the world bosses in Wrothgar. The prices of the blueprints have finally become accessible so that many more players get to enjoy furniture crafting.

Also, just wait for Morrowind and then, after, for spellcrafting. Even greater days are coming.
    My characters:
Main and crafter: A Breton magicka templar named Erwann Sorril
Alt 1: A Bosmer sorcerer named Tuuneleg
Alt 2: An Imperial dragonknight named Gaius Tullius Hastifer
    Alt 3: An Argonian vampire/nightblade named Observe-le-Xanmeer
Alt 4: A Nord werewolf/dragonknight named Sigurd Hurlevent
Alt 5: A Breton sorcerer named Gilian Sorril (he's Erwann's younger brother)
    Alt 6: A Khajiit nightblade named Jolan-dar
Alt 7: A Nord warden named Sigurmar Hurlevent (he's Sigurd's younger brother)
Alt 8: An Altmer templar named Oioriel
Alt 9: An Argonian stamina Warden named Danse-avec-les-Rainettes
Alt 10: A Redguard templar named Neemokh af-Corelanya
Alt 11: A Nord stamina sorcerer named Olga Écoute-Vent
Alt 12: A Breton magicka Warden named Ian Sorril
Alt 13: A Dunmer magicka necromancer named Ilmoran Dren
Alt 14: An Orc stamina necromancer named Norgol gro-Borziel
Alt 15: A Nord magicka necromancer named Thorgen Givresang
Alt 16: An Imperial magicka dragonknight named Publius Valeirus Hastifer (Just call him "Valerio" - he's Gaius younger troublemaker of a brother)
Main in NA (For collaborative events): A Breton magicka nightblade named Titouan Sorril (long-lost brother of Erwann and Gilian)

    ES-TV series.

Wait, what?! You are joking. Please say you are joking.

Though it pains me to say it as I do love the lore, it would be truly awful. Fantasy needs lots of money and damn good actors (usually Brits :p ) to make it believeable. And good plot lines. And exceptional CGI. And lots of sex & death & intrigue and ES is a bit too vanilla to make it work. Sadly.

It would just be a poor imitation of GoT and suffer for it.

If you go to Google and search "ES tv-series" theres actually quite many hits already. Its taking off!

I totally disagree with "And lots of sex & death & intrigue". I think after Game of Thrones what is quite sad and miserable, hope is exactly the key word to make it work, combine Hope with Violence and Love, you get nice triangle to work around, something for everyone, well almost.

My idea isnt btw, expensive, its cheap Hercules and Xena clone, with good plot, well you dont even need plot, just play around Hope, Violence and Love, and a few good wisely chosen actors, and the remaining money is put onto effects to bring Tamriel alive, yeah, Tamriel Twist.

Morrowind will make ESO great again!
Morrowind will make ESO more popular than ever. I expect that 4v4v4 will also bring back small scale PvPers who took a break from the game. New PvE content and hype will bring more of the new ppl to ESO, and I do hope updates after Morrowind will keep us busy and happier than a guar that is up to his eyes in stinkweed and ash yams.

All MMOs are dieing after the initial launch rush if all you look at is people leaving to new players starting ratio. ESO has actually had swings where the opposite is true as well.

If you want to see what a steep downhill trend looks like; go check out SWTOR over the past year. Even there, it was the typical slow decline until they made an epic blunder in game design not understanding what their audience had become

I've been playing since Beta, and the game feels more populated now than in years. I still think the glory days are ahead of us, however, Morrowind has sparked an interest deep into the Elder Scrolls community.

No, ESO is beyond its greatest days, we will see less and less players.
Lack of any meaningful content, ridiculous rng (token system any one} mind blowing class changes that are uncalled for, perhaps listen a little to the player base ?

The general dumbing down of the game and I expect it's just as bad for PVP but can't comment as I don't pvp now or even play tbh..

The game is not dying....at least on Xbox na. I hear conflicting stories about PC. Some claim to play in a ghost town while others are claiming to be smothered by "causals". I dunno....

Console population seems to be very strong. Though when xp events happen, most are grinding new chars so things like pvp, vendors, and vet trials/dungeons are more difficult t find. However that's normal, once the experience grind is over, things go back to the way it normally is.

morrowind will bring the hype and new nostolgic players in to the game but then like most games the boom will be over and they'll drop in numbers again, they won't say this though they'll say like we've got 12 million accounts now but what you don't know is only like 1 million of these are active on each server ^^

Myself and around five other friends all joined ESO in the last month or two, and everywhere seems to be quite populated. Looking forward to Morrowind and surprised to hear that the game is losing players. Seems like it's doing quite well from what I can see.

Games like these always lose a percentage of the player base and have a slow uptake of players during content drops or new editions of the game are released. It happens and is expected. The player base will rise again when Morrowind drops.

Looking at Google Trends is not a good indicator of how popular a game is, it is however a good indicator of how many new people are discovering the game (they'd be the people most likely to google the game and related guides).

    https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=elder scrolls online

What we can see if that interest in the game had peaked during the launch and had a comparable but much shorter spike when Tamriel Unlimited was released.

Right now the influx of players is only 6% of those initial rushes which honestly is NOT bad seeing as we didn't have huge marketing campaigns.

Now, lets look at something that might tell us about how the playerbase looks like:

    https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=maelstrom arena

The amount of players interested in Maelstrom Arena has actually PEAKED right after One Tamriel. This means that the amount of players attempting challenging content has been pretty steady since 2015 when the arena was realeased.

On the whole (*little kid giggle*), the game is not downsizing. Like I read on some other posts, it's a matter of perspective. If you only do one or two things, and those populations are declining in popularity, then yes. To you it may seem like the game is failing. But if you take into account everything that is going on, the game is not declining. My girlfriend and I recently went on a recruiting binge and recruiting upwards of about 20 people in about two days. More than we have ever had. And the majority of those were actually new players. One thing I can say for sure, is a smaller and smaller amount of RP'ers out there. Of course, this could be attributed to player housing (everyone wants to RP in their home or guild home) or lack of knowledge on where this is happening. But it is no way meaning that there is a decline in the game.

    For the immersion part:
The game is too static for a real TES game. If they want to get the TES players, ESO still needs to evolve.

It needs more dynamic content. Less automated "press USE to continue" moments and more actual doing stuff. If I need to open a door with a staff, I should equip the staff and shoot at the door. Not press "USE" and be done.

If I need to prepare a ritual, I should not just gather the ingredients and press "USE" but pick up the ingredients, and then place them properly in the world.

There needs to be a margin for error, so that success actually feels like I accomplished something. Just running around pressing "USE" all the time is not RPGish.

Feels like the game is dying out on Xbox EU, atleast for the endgame pve and the pvp community I think. 1) After homestead patch most trials are broken again and it takes them way to long to do anything about it. 2) This weekend I went in pvp again after the campain reset this friday, so you expect to have pop locked campaing right? Well only AD was on 3 bars, EP and DC were both on 1 bar and even on primetime they had 1 bar. We only have 1 'active' campain on eu aswell, others are all dead.

    "Many indications of a downswing......."

What indications? Cyrodiil is crazy busy. Starter towns are crazy busy. Craglorn is crazy busy. The current birthday event has meant that all daily quests are crazy busy. Two of the trade guilds I'm in have broken their trade records several times already this year, they're crazy busy. Mats farming seems to be crazy busy judging by the number of people I see out there with me. The 3 PVP/PVE guilds I'm in are growing in size, and they are crazy busy.

I'm on PC/Mac, EU server. I don't know about anywhere else, but to my mind ESO is doing pretty well without Morrowind.

It clearly shows a huge downswing coming from November. This is exactly what I observe in game. The game is far from being dead, but for the last two months I feel less and less popularity. See less and less new players etc...

From my in-game observations, ESO peaked in December, dropped significantly in January, and has been building through February and March. Not enough April to really tell, given all the festivals and events, but right now April is pretty busy.

As you can tell from my vote, I'm going to remain optimistic.

However, this is all dependent on how well ZoS continues to generate revenue in order to bring us the better times.

Going F2P... won't make this a reality, honestly.

This is my first MMO, but I'm pretty sure there's a reason why most good MMOs require a subscription, and while those F2Ps are... well, free.

I don't feel that much of a downswing—I do feel that since console launch the amount of players has gone down steadily, and then platueing every DLC and then steadily going again. Maybe this is the 'Downswing' you're referring to—but I just see this as a natural part of online gaming. When I think 'Downswing' a mass exodus of players comes to mind.
