Reasons to stand around:

1. waiting for group to fill up before a trial
2. waiting for Maelstrom timer to reset
3. having a conversation with someone via text or voice chat and not paying attention to the character
4. sitting in dungeon que and dont have anything else going on
5. trying to make a sale over zone chat

I don't always leave my toon mounted when I'm AFK, but I prefer to leave my character mounted just because it looks cool. And yes, I think being mounted on that cheap brown stable horse looks just as cool as any of the Crown Store mounts. It just looks good when people are mounted. It makes the city interesting. Sometimes I'll stay mounted while waiting at a dolmen just for looks, even if it's just that humble little brown stable horse.

I mostly use horses when I'm in cities, just for the sake of immersion.

It has ZERO to do with wanting to make other people jealous, or wanting to show off a rare mount.

I come back and waggle the mouse once in a while, of course. I don't stay away that long, though. If I was going to stay away for a super long time, I'd just quit the game.

And questing. But once you've done all the quests that are in the cities, then yeah, just repairs and crafting.
