Battlegrounds: Wager matches?

React

Something I've always felt that ESO PVP lacked was risk. Your gear doesn't break, you don't need to use supplies if you don't want to, you lose nothing upon death, and you take nothing from those you kill.

I'd like to propose an extra game mode for battlegrounds: the wager match. There could be several different "buy in" prices (1k, 5k, 10k) per person, which would contribute to a pot to be distributed amongst the winning team. This would provide a new form of competitive play with some real risk behind it, aside from the occasional teabag or cheeky banter.

Obviously, just like everything in pvp, there would be some balance issues (unkillable builds, proc set stacking, multiple destro ultimate, etc) but I'm sure these could be dealt with by those willing to put the thought in.

I'd just like some opinions. Would people like to see something like this introduced?

Can we get some examples on how people can exploit ?
THE CAVELRY HAS ARRIVED! Cav is a professional magblade, (in his not so professional opinion). He is immortal and is fighting for the Pact since 2E 572, amidst the turmoil of the Second Akaviri Invasion. He protects the provinces of Skyrim, Morrowind and Black Marsh.

Can you elaborate on that because you can just trade gold with anyone, how can a system where you can only bet on yourself against your opponents be exploited if the only money at stake is what is on the table by the participants?

    Thought so too.

Can't see something like this because BG's will be casual friendly. And if it's optional then I don't see the point.

Yes, to hold tournaments, all we'd need is for ZOS to add is the ability to hold a custom match between three pre-formed groups of 4.

Next on the wishlist would be spectator camera, and if Morrowind sells a lot of copies and BGs become popular, who knows, eventually they might add more deathmatch modes like 3v3v3, 4v4, 3v3, 1v1v1, 2v2v2 etc., battle royale or last man standing.

One idea is a group of 5+ buddies join a 4v4v4 on multiple factions and do nothing, causing their teams to lose, and just conning the 6 or so losers out of their mandatory bet and splitting it with the players who helped lose. There's far better ways to make some coin, but don't underestimate people who WANT to ruin your day.

Despite all that, it sound like a good way to make some coin! I'm fresh out of columbine, so...

Why would the bet be mandatory? Using GTA 5 as an example it's up to you to match the bet or just not bet. Just like in GTA you'd likely only bet if you were confident in your chances. I think in GTA betting is underutilized, likely because of how small a window you have to toss a bet out, but the system of betting is pretty solid. However, within a week I think most players will recognize other players' teams and know if they will win or lose against that team and likely only put up bets against teams they know they can beat. Of course you could cover that up by making the teams blind to each other till betting was over.

To be honest, I don't think exploiting in the sense that "3 people could purposely make a team lose" is a concern. This would require RNG to match the 3 people with their opposing 4 person team, and even at a 10k buy in that is gonna be 30k split 7 ways. 2k per person for what would likely be a 10-15 minute endeavor? There are FAR better ways to make money than that.

The real exploitation we would need to worry about would be stacking destro ultimates, groups of 4 templars (mag or stam) overlapping heals so hard that they can't be killed, or just proc stacking teams in general.

Options to prevent these exploits: Setting limitations such as one destro ult per team, only 2 identical classes per team, limiting proc sets to a single proc per person maximum, etc. I'm not too sure HOW they would implement these restrictions as I'm not familiar with this type of mechanic, although I'm sure it is possible.

Gonna be tough to find a game in something that utilizes the group finding function with that high of a bid. I myself have no issues with forming a good team to run 50k wagers and take people's money, however the lack of people qued for that would likely make it redundant to the idea of "making money" while pvping, since long wait times will be spent earning nothing.

It's not about making money, at least not in my eyes. At this point in the game, 200k is basically nothing for me and for a lot of other players, yet 50k would basically be the same thing as q-ing for free. It's better than nothing I guess so w/e, free money for me and my premade.

Against a destro ult dump, pop a resto ult, spread, cross heal until they end, then converge again. No big deal. Procs haven't been an issue for a while either.

You can say "no big deal" but in reality, these are the imbalances we are looking at when speculating this game mode. Proc stacking may not be as potent as it used to be, however if you run into a team where 2 people are running tremorscale/viper/heavy, you're gonna have a tough time with them. I'm making these observations based purely on the imbalance that exists in the game - you can argue that there is counter play, but to an extent there shouldn't NEED to be such precise counter play to avoid these teams because they shouldn't exist. Hence why i suggested the quoted limitations.

These limitations are necessary for the health and longevity of the game mode. Even experienced players will get tired of getting wiped by the most cancerous unbalanced setups that exist currently, which will cause them abandon the game mode. It's a vicious circle: Players experience severe balance issues which cause them to lose cash on what could have been a fair battle -> players stop using the game mode -> que times become so long that the remainder of players no longer see it viable or profitable to wait -> game mode becomes dead.
