ZoS - Please Make Black Hair Available for Altmer!

This is something that seriously drives me insane. I just want black hair on my Altmer D:

I'd easily pay some crowns for some hair dye or something. There are Altmer NPCs with black hair, so why can't we also have it?

Please ZoS ><

This kind of thread is candy to me

I am asking for it since beta. Yes, there are Altmer NPCs with black hair, there is a pre-release promo screenshot with an Altmer that has black hair, there is a card in TES Legends that has a black-haired Altmer, and you can make black-haired Altmer in both Oblivion and Skyrim. Anyone that dares telling me it is not lore-friendly can go brush their teeth and drink a big jar of orange juice right after it.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Thank you. I just don't get why we can't have black hair in ESO. The darkest hair color you can get isn't very dark at all. It's....quite sad. ):

Short answer is DKs likely won't be seeing a ton of changes before we go live; this class is still quite powerful (as it should be being a tank), even after some of the adjustments we've made to other classes and abilities.

The hard reality simply is we didn't have black hair dye back then.

Clearly mutants or blood magic. Both of which are rare and rareness needs to be handled by the Devs and not the player base who would all promptly roll black haired Altmers and make the rareness thing basically "not rare" any more. We can't have that!

In meantime you can wait for black hair dye to be invented, in about one thousand years. Or time travel, whichever comes first.

I'm not sure if you are being serious since what you are saying is absurd, but I will bite because this is an actual serious matter to me. I am not joking, my first character has been wearing hoods for 3 years to hide her hair because it is not black. It actually decreases my enjoyment of the game and limits what she can wear.

1 - It isn't really rare, and literally nobody comments on it. "Mutants" within the Altmer would certainly be something to be spoken of, especially when many of these black-haired Altmer are part of the Veiled Heritance. There is no dialogue option or anything, not even a "whoa hey I never saw an Altmer with your hair color before!".

2 - There are colorful hair dyes already, as shown by the crown crate hair styles.

3 - Illusion magic. You actually are turned in an Altmer with black hair (well, beard) during a quest in Skywatch by wearing an enchanted bauble. If it was a "super rare" trait, surely it wouldn't be a trait that someone that is trying to infiltrate in an evil organization would go for. Logic dictates that Raz would have gone for something that doesn't turn heads to you instead, if it was oh so rare.

So... Explain? Because the last thing we need after three years of highlighting this issue is someone using arguments that do not align with reality to dismiss it.

I think the easiest way would be to allow unlocking non-race-specific options through the crown store. Just pay a bit extra and get the black hair option for altmer, or the tanned skin option for nords, or whatever...
  • ericsparrow
I just wanted to chip in to this one, but to put my point from a slightly different perspective. I've been a Character Art lead / Character Artist for nearly 20 years now in video games and worked on a game which have a similar rpg free to play model as this one. The thing that should really be driving the OP nuts is - Why haven't they already done this!?

Seriously. On the game i mentioned above when it came to monetisation of the characters the first thing the Money dude said he wanted to sell was Hair Colours, the second was Skin Colours, the third was Hair Styles. Skin colours and hair colours are dirt cheap to make.. and they would sell. If you make sure your pipelines are set up properly you can c**p those things out like nobody's business. So why is it the only thing they really sell out of the three of those is hairstyles. Ok sure there are some very specific skin changes for achievements but those are seen pretty infrequently ( they may also be done with the tattoo / overlay system I don't know I haven't got any so I cant comment). Also chances are behind the scenes your toon's body geometry ( naked ) will already be compatible with every skin colour for every race in the game. It's all the same geometry, or the morphing of the bodies ( for compatibility with the clothing ) wont work which means its going to have to be using the same textures. Obviously I could be wrong... but that's how I would have done it.

Anyway - given that ZoS are prepared to charge you for eyelashes and not prepared to sell you skin or hair colours (which is so much more meaningful to a character and therefore monetizable) makes me think they cant. Must be some underlying technical reason limiting them to the 20 choices made in the character creation. Or rather 20 choices per race.. which are made at character select. Those colours themselves are an artistic decision not a technical one. They also can't change the colour choices they made back then for character creation because while some people may like the new decisions it may wreck the look of other people's characters, and if they can't change and they can't add.. they can't do.

Someone above mentioned the crown crates hair styles. I had a look and the only style I could find with a different colour was a kinda spikey one with blue tips. It was still your colour at the base of the tips though. So while you could add a new hair style with a specific black colour ( using this method ). It would still be just that hair style in black not... I was going to say changeable.. but its not changeable anyway but what I mean is a regular hairstyle with a suite of colour options one of which is the OP's desired black for Altmer. That did get me thinking thoughl. Why not just add special hair styles in as hats. Then you could make them dyeable. In fact if you are going to do that... why not switch all the hair styles over to this system like they did with the clothes.

Makes me think- - maybe they could? maybe they will? maybe the are? ....then....why haven't they?

and thus we return to where we began

    toodles

    PS
I think there is a difference between NPC's who can be constructed using the full suite of available textures and geometry and the player characters who are limited in this weird and whacky undefined way. Which is why you have Altmer NPC's with black hair. It's cos they aren't Altmer.. they are just a collection of geometry and texture options put together in an editor to create a look. The fundamental weight on the game of NPC Bob the Altmer if he has black or blonde hair makes no difference. But if you the player have 21 instead 20 colour options? perhaps that does. I don't know.

It took until the 'hair pack' release for me to give my male Bosmer the Short Imperial hairstyle, even though other Bosmer NPCs have it in the game... but character creator didn't offer it. Some of the decisions that ZOS makes is just beyond me.
