900 rubidite ore, not a single tempering alloy

I've had bad luck refining in the past, but never as bad as that. 916 ore refined in Hews Bane, and not a single alloy. Also did 1,000 silk and scraps, and got just three wax.

That's rng for you. The drop rate of tempering alloys is stupidly low.
Guess next time i will have to sacrifice a goat to the devil to get some alloys....

I refined about 50 of one of the top mats a couple of days ago and got three tempers... time before that it was several hundred before I got one. Gotta love RNGesus.

But another time I stupidly refined about 1000 Silk on a character with no points in that passive and wondered why I didn't get any tempers. Ohhhh... right....*facepalm*

I've had this a few times. As you'll question the game over and over again, it's likely that you'll get more than you were expecting on the next 900..

And just remember, you're getting double the yield in hews bane, so 900 is only 450 times worth of collecting

It's possible if you farm the same spot over and over, the yield goes down.

I say this because I decided to try farming the exact same spot for heartwood today in Hew's Bane. Had decent luck getting heartwood at first, then it seemed like I wasn't getting it at all. I don't know whether I was just imagining it or not, but it seemed like my chances of getting heartwood went down considerably after I'd been picking at the same node for a good long while. I wonder if this is something built into the game to discourage botting, or if I was just having bad luck in the second half of my time there. Who knows.

*I wasn't botting. I was there at the keyboard the whole time, and wouldn't know how to make a bot even if I wanted to, which I don't because botters suck. The only reason I was there was because of the Thieve's Guild event, and this is not my normal mode of farming.

I farmed 270 ore. Got 2 alloys out the first 50 and then out of the rest nothing

Heartwood makes sense as its part of node loot so reducing drop with intense farming makes sense.
Tempers is gained during refining after material is stored in stack then perhaps banked or sold, very unlikely they keep some extra data with each material in stack. It was explained about crafting bags, they just store material id and amount

I've gotten 3 temps outta 50, amd 1 out of 1600. It's so random. I stop if I get nothing out of 200/

I had learnt this technique from other previous posts/discussion about this. I do no more than 100 at a crafting station. It seems to work better this way. I do this with all raw mats refining.. no more than 100 at a time. I get from 1-4, at an average when it hits. I may not get anything from one or two iterations or so, but can also hit during two to three consecutive iterations. I felt bad (just a bit, though, ha ha) yesterday when somebody fumed and ranted off cursing ZOS on zone text chat that he didn't get one single temp alloy from 900 ores, yet, I got four alloys from an iteration of 100. Every map areas I am in, I only refine 100 at a crafting station, then repeat when I come upon another station and so on. The most I got was 6 alloys per 100, once upon a time.

"working as intended" I have refined as many as 1400 before and not gotten a single Temper. RNG will be the death of this game IMO. And please save the "other games have RNG" comments. A bad system is still a bad system no matter how many games us it

Did you respec recently and forget to put points into temper expertise? Speaking from experience.

Nah. I've had my skill points set for the last six months. This was just an exceptionally bad run of luck. And in Hew's Bane. During double-drop week.

I refine in 100-block increments. I refine 10 times, then back away from the station. Then return for 10 more. This usually gives me a good drop. Not this time.

i've noticed a negative change for refining after homestead for some reason.... (maybe just bad luck)
on the positive side though, i've noticed a change in gold mat drops from writs since homestead... i get 2-3 for the set of writs every day instead of getting shafted or only 1 if i'm lucky.

Hmm. This is rather interesting. Here I was thinking stuff like this was in my head and that "RNG" is the culprit. Now, I'm starting to think otherwise.

Once a month, I head over to Khenarthi's Roost and give away collections of blue motifs. One day, a recipient asked how easy it was to find them. I didn't think about the question at first, but I did find the question curious to ask myself, "How often do I find these books?"

Turns out: once a day. No more. No less. Last Saturday, I decided to put this theory to the test and spent an entire day going from AD zone to AD zone. From top to bottom, I managed only a single motif: Khajiit.

As I continued to keep track, something else popped onto my radar: Kuta stones. I notice I seem to collect far more Kuta stones every 4 days, rather than at least once a day. Turns out, this also seems to be the drop rate from purple/gold motifs.

So, it seems in addition to RNG, I sense a time barrier is also used against me. This is all preliminary, as I'm still keeping track, but tonight, I should expect to see Kuta stones show up now that it's my 4th day since getting one.

I don't see this mechanic working against breaking down stuff, though. Seems like this is pure RNG. I can receive a couple of waxes one day, and not see them for a day or two, usually only getting one (but requires 100+ mats to break down).

I'm not against RNG, but I will have to say this one seems ... punishing.

Yeah for some odd reason I get better chances out of lower stacks than i do with higher, even though I did manage to pull about 15 alloys from 1100 ores

Before Homestead, for 3 weeks I collected data how successful is my refining, then I got bored and stopped. Here are results:

2810 Rubedo leather 8 gold
2800 Ancestor silk 11 gold
4280 Rubedite ore 19 gold
2850 Ruby ash 24 gold

In Homestead rng is far worse for me, I can refine few hundred mats and didn't get anything.

I have determined over time that if I don't get any Tempers of any kind in the first 3 refines, I am not going to get much in the way of Tempers over the entire session. This means little to no Gold ones obviously. So, now I hit the station do 3 refines, no tempers I walk away. I may come back a few minutes later or I may come back tomorrow or I may go to another station. I am not going to keep refining after 3 attempts with no tempers because it is not going to get any better.

That sucks, I think Blacksmithing is broken in this game. I get dreugh wax and rosin constantly, but even when I break down blues I'm not getting *** dwarven oil, not to mention the RNG on refining to get temp alloy.

Yeah, I feel you. I refined over 1200 ores and didn't get a gold nugget. I should sacrifice an Argonian. Just because.

Lol I did around 5k rubedite ore and only got about 4 temp alloys. The next day I did roughly 1k ore and got 13 temp alloys.

I used to buy into that, but I really dont think there is anything to it. I also used to always use the same remote crafting station. Pretty sure its all superstition.

The reality is that you need to refine 5-10k mats at a time to see any kind of meaningful results in terms of drop RNG. I did about 20k mats a few weeks ago, fairly evenly distributed. I am finding about 1 temper per 200 refined, which has been the generally accepted drop rate for a while. I dont think it got worse this patch.

End of the day, temper prices have dropped pretty hard. Certainly there are multiple causes (more people doing writs, farming crafting mats, no new gear to make gold) that sort of thing, but if drop rates really were drastically lowered, it would put upward pressure on prices.
