Some of us are already sitting at 12 characters, and we don't want to have to delete any just to play a new class.

If someone wants to buy a ton of slots to have characters of all possible combinations of sex, class, race and main attribute, let them go for it.Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.
Meet my characters:Command: Do the thing.
Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.

Some of us crazy types like to have all options to adapt to the meta. Personally, I have a magic and stam of each class in my alliance (8), one more toon in each alliance (2), a dedicacted tank and a free slot. My plan was to make the 12 spot a dedicated healer, but I dont really want to invest in a character just to delete it. Will probably just hold that spot open until we get more info. Also, its rather a large investment to max out a horse, grab skyshards, level undaunted, etc. More slots are needed.1 -

There are practical reasons to limit it (to an extent.) I remember with Star Trek Online, there was a player who kept expanding their bridge crew roster (NPCs you could take with you on stories) until they had enough to fully staff their ship (they were flying an assault cruiser, I think, so ~800)...
...and the database broke, horrifically.
After that, Cryptic capped the Bridge officers and character slots to 128 or something like that (I don't remember the exact cap.)
So, while there is a reason to limit the number of slots you can buy, 12 total is shockingly low, and it probably should be someplace in the crazy range, like 60 or 120. Even if only 3 people ever buy that many slots, it means the rest of us don't have to worry about capping off, and being unable to play new classes, or re-experiencing the old content again.2 -

I should have put, "fully staff" in scare quotes. They seriously went out there and were trying to account for their entire crew roster with BOffs. Also, I'm not 100% certain, but I think there's at least one tier 6 with six stations. One Cmdr, one LtCmdr, two Lts, and two Ens. I can't remember which ship it was, though.0 -

I'd be fine with a one-time-only option. Heck, I'd be fine with "you can only change to Warden."
