Can we please fix mounts running/stopping constantly?

I experience this a lot especially when sprinting on mount. Sometimes it feels like I break even if I stop sprinting. It seems like I arrive at the same time. Anyway, this has been an annoyance. I sometimes switch to a different kind of mount cat/horse/wolf because one feels like it stutters more but i'm sure it's just my imagination.

Nothing in the PTS patch notes about it, so more lame riding. :/

It drives me crazy that my horse can gallop unrealistically up a flight of stairs and yet has to slow to a walk because of a half inch high bump on the ground.

You literally have to MASH your shift key while your ride your mount. It's ridiculous.

I don't know, do you sort of ride around things/obstacles? Do you take the smartest path even if it isn't always the crow-flies shortest all the time?

I can't really say this is much of a problem at all personally, either in or out of Cyrodiil. And guild members/others never seem to have any problems when riding in a group, or the like. Admittedly I take care when riding to choose the smoothest route all the time (just second nature I guess). Sure my horse does slow down and speeds up again at times, but when that happens it always seems for a reasonable reason.
If you can be anything, be kind.

Definitely a bug I wish they would fix. In the mean time, I've trained myself to jump onto and off any bridge, jump onto stairs, and over any raised pathing segments in the stone/brick roads.

Yes! It's horribly annoying but if we are talking about terrain problems.... the undaunted orbs skill. There are so many instances they disappear because of terrain. Smallest bump and you can't use them at all. Even a straight flat surface like the bridge before troll boss in sanctum, they still bug out there and it's a waste of my resources.

I noticed that wolves and senches are not too afected by this issue. I have tested with all mounts but camels and guars:

    Horses are affected.
Bears feel as if they were even more affected. They feel super slow.

Both of them after a jump are quite slow to continue running like before the jump.

Senches and wolves generally seem to not be affected. They feel really fast and no matter how you jump they won't be as affected.

I have been testing this a lot because it is very curious that it behaves this way. One of my chars only likes to ride horses, the other owns a bear. I had to stop using horses and my bear to use the storm atronach wolf because as it is a wolf, it behaves super fast (and because its the first wolf I got). Now I run around jumping without being slowed down.

When I go to do stuff with friends and they use horses I notice I am faster by using the wolf.

ZOS please fix this x.x I miss my bear :C

Well, I am happy to report that since Homestead this has gotten much better, and happens much less. There is still the occasional hiccup but overall riding is a much smoother experience since the update, particularly on max speed horses.

Must be an "initial pass" type fix as it didn't make it into the patch notes from what I can tell. Hopefully it will continue to improve.

Also, I was apparently really grumpy when I posted this... *Sigh* that happens more and more lately.

@ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_JessicaFolsom @ZOS_RichLambert Can we get some sort of comment on this? It's still in the game and makes horses nearly unusable. It's not as bad with wolves and senches, but still bad. It's pretty bad in Craglorn but in Vvardenfell my mounts work a lot better.

but think of the emersion and the RP aspect of it. No, really this should be fixed. Oh and what about character jumping, shoot that really frustrates me.

You'll notice in WoW this never happens. That is because there are no stairs, or high edges in WoW. Everything is flat and shaded to look like it has depth.

Actually you do get this in wow, just not as often as here.

They also have an issue with their box collision on low objects like fences, rocks, and low walls, the bounding box for their box collision is actually larger than they need for the entities, which means if you get too close and try to jump forward to jump over them it ends up acting as if your jumping against an invisible wall, we get this in ESO too, but not as much. It's because they're using box collision instead of polygon collision to reduce strain on the resources, the problem with that comes about when you have an entity that isn't flat, to compensate for that extra bit sticking up they have to increase the box collisions boundary to compensate, but that means the lower areas have an invisible area with collision enabled above them.

I do not think this is fixable. Not sure if this applies on PC, but on console the map loads in quite noticeably as you ride quickly around.

I believe this mount stuttering issue is a result of the map not loading fast enough, so your mount has to come to a sudden halt as you ride around. Mainly I base this off of the fact that this issue persists in Cyrodiil a lot more than anywhere else. Also it becomes very bad when there is a large fight (lag) going on.

.... Besides all of that.... it'll never be fixed. Just being realistic :disappointed:

I do not think this is fixable.

It depends on what the cause is, personally i think it's just the collision boxes on some entities sticking up and catching the player, if that's the case it's entirely fixable, they just need to switch the entity from box collision to polygonal collision so that the collision box follows the contours of the entity, however this does raise other issues, it significantly increases the resource usage and if overused can effect frame-rates, another way of doing it would be to switch to a custom box collision, this would entail having multiple collision boxes of varying size on the entity to more define the shape of the collision box, this would be a lot less resource hungry than polygonal collision and still be better than plain box collision.

I think they actually said they noticed the reduced speed, just that it was fine because it "affected everybody equally." :D

That might be "fine" unless you strategically BOUGHT more speed from the crown store.
Then the purchased product is not fit for its intended purpose.

    On Topic.
    • Pressing "E" to activate something sometimes throws a mount underneath me.
    • I often run to my destination, only to have my horse arrive in time for my to dismount.
    • Sometimes my horse is faster than 'other times'...

The only way to fix this is to have graphics that look like WoW.

You'll notice in WoW this never happens. That is because there are no stairs, or high edges in WoW. Everything is flat and shaded to look like it has depth.

In games like ESO the wood boards say on a dock are physically there so the the engine has to take that into account and sometimes it doesn't handle it well. So if you want that horse to never have an issue fall back on looks by 10 years. This is why you can essentially run WoW on a potato.

I don't play wow, so in fact, I will NOT notice.

What I have noticed is that the horse is just an overlay of the character. But the technical issue you describe above, is not the issue that the OP is raising. It isn't about rendering the model; its about the model' progress being affected by other models. My running character stops dead on a minor rock projecting from ground; it can't jump over walls that are less tahn kneehigh. et al..

I'm sorry, but since the engine update with Warlords of Draenor, you can no longer run it on a potato.

You need at least a microwave.

Seriously, my laptop that ran ESO just fine could *not* run Warlords.
